Hello from a citizen of the world

Post by thinkucantell » Wed Jul 20, 2011 12:03 pm

Hey there burners :)

It has been my dream to go to burning man since I first heard about the event in 2005 (I was 18, am now 24). In 2009 and 2010 I successfully applied for and received a scholarship ticket for BM, but by the time the event was looming each year I was too broke to finance my way even with the discounted ticket and had to give my ticket up (so as to be responsible and let some other hopeful make use of this awesome opportunity) Yeah, it freakin sucked. This year, I just graduated with my BA and had planned on going traveling overseas during the time when BM was set to happen, so I didnt apply for a scholarship ticket. A tragedy in my family had sadly left me unable to do this either and I find myself in a really weird situation - that is, in the States, able to theoreticcaly afford to go, but not knowing what to do ior where to begin and starting to plan really late. Coupled with that, tickets are going to sell out pretty soon so decisions need to be made quickly. I want so badly to go to Burning Man, but I have no one to go with, no camp to join, and very limited funding to do it. So Im in a quandary: recent events in my life have highlighted the fact that life is fucking short, and that you should seize the moment. On the other hand I am quite broke and would only be able to afford to go if I proverbially hitched my wagon to someone else who has been before and can, you know, guide me in the ways of self-reliant playa living.

Im a singer, a guitarist, I hoop, and I did it once on fire.

any advice?? anything? I appreciate it.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Have questions? Read this first: http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/
Everybody on eplaya is always excited to help first timers; but in sympathy for some of us old timers, please get your required reading out of the way before posting. As hard as it is to rein in the the excitement and enthusiasm, and as unbelievable as it might seem, most of your questions have already been asked and answered, if you just take a moment to read.

Now, let the adventure begin! (if not this year, there's always next.)

Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Hello, thinkucantell,

Indeed, a quandary. We recently had a good thread on ePlaya (prompted by a virgin's post) about how our individual costs stack up, and why it costs what it does to Burn (and why if affording a ticket is too much, usually attending the Event in addition is way too expensive, too). The thread was called:

I'm humpbacked and poor...
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=39495

Please have a read; I think it will be helpful in terms of coming up with a budget for this year OR the next. And I think it will illustrate why people with a gift ticket---already a rarity---are careful to give them to people who have the rest of the stuff "in the bag", so to speak: 1) prior Burners fallen on hard times, but who have the skills, supplies, or networks not to be defenseless, or 2) can-do newbies of current acquaintance who just need a little financial help to push them over the top.

If worse comes to worse and you don't go, click on Regionals from the main site, and meet Burners in your area. It's good to have Burner friends and attend local Decompression and Precompression parties, which are Burn-flavored, way cheaper than Burning, and a lot of fun.

"Aqua Tainer" Its a 7 gallon water jug.
Two 3liter Arrowhead water jugs often a buck a piece right now.
Some silver ware to eat with.
Something to warm food up on- Craigslist
goggles
hat
cup
shoes
Socks, lots of socks
sun screen
vinegar
A chair to sit on
A vehicle to get you there
and

Hey thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it- I live in Los Angeles... Truth is I think that you're right that I've already made up my mind- guess I'm just really conflicted because it basically boils down to a financial issue which is the exact opposite of embodying decommodification. It sucks because burning man is put of my reach only finicially and i feel very conflicted...but by the same token I'm no freeloader - I want to contribute to the community and really be radically self reliant. Anyway, im gonna try to work it out... Hopefully see you there.

Greetings thinkucantell,

I think you should do it! If you wait for the perfect time in the future, there is the possibility that you will have a job that you can't get enough time off to go to BM or you will be overseas and then BM will seem even more out of reach with the price of a very expensive plane ticket.

If financially things are just a bit tight, there is a way to work things out from Craigslist to thrift stores, you can find nearly everything you need! Comon and join us!
Smile, who cares if you don't have all your teeth.

Buy the ticket!
Find the ride,
Bring the food and water.

Everything else will work out.
One of the best ways to contribute to the community is to be there, and help people do things. Or help organizations get stuff done. Man power (Or woman Power) is one of the most valuable things on playa.

Welcome Think!

It's not likely you'll have a "perfect" time to go and will carry the regret of not going for a very long time. However, if you have $100 in the bank and $101 rent due, being homeless isn't a good idea.

If you can swing the basics, and find a way there -- even if it means eating Ramen for a while -- then go. The money you spent won't matter in the long run but you can never have the time back.

Hopefully we'll see you there!

You've given me pause to consider what the minimum requirements are. this is a gift in it's own right.

There are lists... read the survival guide. Alternative energy zone has some good preparation tips, and I always try to mention how helpful Phil and Louise's civilized explorer burning man pages were for me when I was thinking about my first burn.
http://www.cieux.com
http://ae-zone.org/bm-camping-tips/

I would suggest you separate what you need from what would make it nicer in your lists. start with the basics. elaborate as time and money allows.

ticket
shelter/shade - tent, paracord or rope, tarp, long stakes/rebar
bedding: sleeping bag, air mattress or foam
water
sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
windstorm protection: goggles, bandana or facemask
food
layered clothing
flashlight/headlamp

things that make it nicer:
cooling food/beverages-

cooking -- Personally, boiling water would be my minimum requirement. I could get by with instant coffee. (some use a sad expression and an empty cup to get their requirements) little butane cannister stoves are nice, or propane burner, bring a beat up pot from the goodwill, or your kitchen, cup, bowl, spoon.

folding chair, little table-- good thing about the schedule of burning man is that it's seasonal clearance time for big box stores, believe it or not... they are making room for the Christmas stuff after Labor Day.

rubbermaid basin.

borrow, but remember it's difficult to get anything back to it's original clean state.

bike

Roll on through, Tumbleweed.
