Howdy from New Jersey

Post by JCarter » Wed Jul 20, 2011 5:13 pm

Good evening, good afternoon, good morning!

My name is James and after a long, long, long break(as in "my first time was in 1999" long break) I'm thinking of going to Burning Man for the second time. After reading "Tribes of Burning Man", various articles, etc. I am thinking of saving my quarters, nickles, and off time to go to Burning Man for 2012 or 2013 at the latest. I'm most likely going to be going to some Burning Man stuff in the NYC/NJ area in the interim but in the mean time I'll be here.
If Neil deGrasse Tyson pulled me off the street to tell me about astronomy that would be awesome. If I was in Amsterdam when this happened and could convince him to tell me about it at a coffeeshop it would be ideal. Just sayin'.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!
You better shoot for 2012, you may not have another chance after that. It is the end of the world you know!
Elderberry

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Hi James!

It's more crowded in Black Rock City these days, but the portapotties are much cleaner now. :)

Yeah. I hear that a lot from my Terrence Mckenna loving friends. Of course, those people who say such things are deluded fools. We all know that the world will end on July 5, 1998*. Obviously. In all seriousness depending on how my savings go and my vacation time plays out(in 2012 I promised that I'd take my girlfriend to Iceland and if she passed that up I promised a group of crazed Euro-stoners** I'd hang out with them for a festival called Dopestock in Amsterdam). From the research I've done it looks like I can make it happen with around 1500 in 2012, most likely around 1700 in 2013.

Aww, c'mon. How much bigger can it be? *goes off to look at the population data for 1999 and 2010*

OMGWTFBBQTHCJHC! You are not kidding. How many of them show up for the actual burn? Are there any good web pages that you would recommend that talk about last year's burn?

*The fact that the date on my PC says July 20, 2011 just shows WE DON'T KNOW WHAT YEAR IT IS! Praise "Bob".

**Whom I love dearly and have all sorts of hideous and wonderful stories with. My personal favorite at the moment is the time that I learned that Primordial Darkness is a kink. Or maybe the French Aragorn Super Stoner.

Yes indeed! I like the AfterBurn report:
http://afterburn.burningman.com/10/

That's just the 2010 AfterBurn introduction. Over in the right hand margin you'll see reports from all areas of the 2010 Burn. I am partial to the Playa Safety section, especially Emergency Services. 4,700 Patients last year, most with minor injuries, only . . . "99 drug related patients (1.3%), and 85 total alcohol-related patients (1.9%)." 562 of them with significant first response treatment, "45 patients transported (an increase of 29% from 2009) to Reno hospitals for additional care in 2010, 34 were stable patients transported by ground ambulance, and 11 were flown out by helicopter."

Hot damn, it's a real city.

How many turned up for the Burn? . . . All of them? :) Naw. Many. The circle seems huge. The Burn itself was pretty great. Crazy dust storm worsened during it, fast Burn, big sudden fireball, storm-drifting fireworks like the Man was casting spells with his sorcerer arms. And after the Man fell, the storm truly settled in, and visibility was practically nil!

The big crowd actually means that the night of the Temple Burn and its comparative silence is astounding and moving.

That said, I don't feel crowded yet . . . just not quite as out in the middle of nowhere as before, and each Burn has been better. I hope you still be happy there too. :)
