Welcome!

You should join a camp, many threads on that. Many threads on packing lists, food, shelter, costumes, illumination.

Your direct route takes you though a county in Nevada on US Route I-80 that has been hostile to the event and agressive in enforcement of various laws in their county. Another road route is through Vancouver and South from there. If you are flying, there are many threads on that.

Have fun on ePlaya and don't mind the snark.

Joking aside, how do you plan on traveling to the shorts? If you're driving down, my general suggestion is to be nice to the border guy, and not to overload your car. If you happen to be getting on I-15 in the states to connect to I-80 I have three things for you. The first is to get off of I-15 just north of SLC and onto what becomes I-215 to get onto I-80. Only because every time I've driven on the I-80/I-15 section it's always been busy, The second is to stop off at Salt Flats, because they are amazing. The third is to stop off at Wendover and be amazed at how hysterically close the casinos come to the NV-UT state line. Who knows you might even feel a kindred connection with your home town while there.

*thinks for a moment*
Oh! Lloydminster is the only town on a province boarder. Well that makes sense now. :)

Anyway, take a look around on the forum. Lots of people come down from Canada and have shared info. Even more people have shared info about camping, and surviving out at Black Rock. Also don't forget the survival guide, and to ask questions.
I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...

I thot the Canadian quota was already filled! JUST KIDDING! :P

You guys bring a level of decorum and dignity to the playa that could otherwise be described as organized chaos (I do have the right group, right...the Canadians? Or was that the Australians?)

Yes...be very nice to the border agents. DO NOT carry anything illegal. All they need is the slightest excuse to pull you over and search EVERYTHING!

Our biggest tip to you is to read everything on these threads! Tons of info. Any questions you have do a Google or Bing search by entering ePlaya (subject)...a bit more efficient than our internal search function.

See ya's in August!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

you aren't FRENCH canadian are you? because we have too many french already. I would say you can get pretty much everything on the way - the only thing presonally that is easy to overlook is shade structure for your tent. but to be honest if its your first time, you probably wont spend a lot of time at your tent.
personally find a camp you like the sound of, it does make life a lot easier if you have somewhere to regroup before going out for more fun. see you soon.

Welcome to the event. Good luck preparing and learning about the event (and hopefully a little geography too hehehe).

Look for a Burning Man (suggested) packing list on the internet. Get ideas on what you'll need, what you can do without, and what you can share and not duplicate. (For instance, you don't need three tents if you can share one) That should help a bit on space.

Boo to those who think it's ok to disparage French Canadians, btw. I think it's odd that the only overt xenophobia that I seem to come across is against that group...

It's tongue-in-cheek, Marc. Australians are actually our favorite group to razz because considering the distance, there are a truly surprising lot of them. And we like them. There are jokes about "quotas" for certain countries and states that are completely arbitrary. Texans. Iowa natives. The French. Anytime someone shows up from somewhere new, we're like "Sorry, we already have 3 people from Nova Scotia." It's silliness.

Graidawg's from the UK, so if there is genuine prejudice against French Canadians somewhere in North America he might not be aware of it.

Thanks, Savannah. It's weird, though, because I did actually have someone in my camp say some anti-Quebecois things. I'll get right on the making-fun-of-Aussies thing, though Flight of the Conchords did it better than anybody could hope to. :P

Sure - and they made fun of NZ, and an imagined NZ-Aussie rivalry, all at the same time too ! :P

Less disparage and more of a feeling that Quebec is a foreign country with it's own customs, language, and immigration rituals. Much like Maine. :D
Or..
It could be an outlet to the cultural mindset that we paid back the French and then some only to realize after that the French will never quite equal it out any time soon. So we figure we'll just tease anything French-like with that 'merica fuck yeah of disregarding any facts. Think of it like this. You have a buddy that you've been going to the bar with for years. Over the course of these visits the two of you have this system of whoever has the cash picks up the tab for the both of you. Neither of you actually has any idea if the split has been equable, but the both of you like to say out load it has. Your buddy remembers when they picked up the tab those few years you two started going to the bar, and you remember the more recent time your buddy was flat broke because of a bad relationship that seemed to occupy every aspect of your buddies life for several years. So in some ways you both know that you've been ahead on the tab count, but at the same time you both know that in the end the tab will be a fifty-fifty split.
I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...
