First time burner from the Dominican Republic

Post by thebb » Thu May 22, 2014 1:00 pm

Hey guys,

First time burner here. Flying in from the Dominican Republic.

I have pretty much everything I can have already set but was wondering how I find out more information about the camps that are available? Or don't even know if I should be in one. Any information pertaining camps and finding a right fit for my time at the playa would be good.

Thanks.

Welcome!

Theme camps are not a must. I've camped more times without one than with one. You'll have neighbors almost no matter what you do. :)

Usually, in exchange for varying amounts of infrastructure & instant social ties, theme camps request work towards their project, and a fee. If you attend without a theme camp you are more responsible for your own comforts, but you have greater freedom.

These are a list of the (registered) theme camps that were here last year. (2014's list is not up yet). The following searchable by keyword if you have distinctive hobbies or interests. You might email a few that seem to mesh with your interests, giving them a nice detailed note about yourself and your skills, and see if they're coming this year and are still accepting campers. Note: it's starting to get late in the year, so don't be surprised if their registration has closed or is about to.

Here's our 2014 Theme Camps forum, which is by no means a complete list of camps at all. There is a helpful thread called "How to Join a Theme Camp" within.

Hey Savannah,

Thanks for the informative reply.

When you camp with a group that means you pay whatever fee and they take care of your sleeping area, etc? Do you know when will this year's list be published?

I already have an RV rented so I might as well just camp by myself if that is the case.

I'm really looking forward to this trip.

When you camp with a group, you pay whatever you and the group negotiate (it could be nothing!) and get whatever it is that you negociate. No hard and fast rules, although the more they give you the more you pay--in a broad sense. They may ask you to "pay" by helping with various chores.
There is no list that is published, except in the following sense: there is a list of theme camps that are accepted as placed theme camps AND who have agreed to be put on the website. (Some don't want placement made public.)
You can get a jump on it now, by looking at last year's list. Go to the upper left of this page and press the link ("Burning Man"). This will give you some idea of what the camps do. Find a half dozen or so that interest you and start emailing the contact. Work on what you have to offer, and don't be offended if they don't say yes, or even if they don't reply. If you find nothing promising, pick a few more.
