Want to DJ, & I dont know where to begin!

Post by BLAOW » Wed Jul 09, 2014 6:46 pm

Hello burners! My name is Ryan (BLAOW!) & this is my 2nd year attending Burning Man. I would love to be able to DJ where ever I can & I dont know who to talk to! A buddy of mine told me to message random camps.... but I'm not sure if thats the best way. Can anyone give me some advice on where to begin? That would make my week even more magical (if even possible!). Let me know any input. Thanks everyone! :)

There's the SPARK tool (http://spark.burningman.com/) that you can use to see if any camps are looking for a DJ.

Honestly, the number of DJs far outnumbers the number of sound systems. It's pretty hit-and-miss to finding a slot. If you want to guarantee your ability to play, find a mutant vehicle or camp to contribute to, work with them, and see if they'll let you play on their system. You could also bring all of your equipment and ride around looking for a soundsystem that is lacking CDJs/Mixer/etc, but that is also hit-and-miss. I would imagine that if a camp doesn't have the proper DJ tools, they might not have been looking for a DJ...

Welcome to eplaya!

I am learning to DJ as well, and ultimately would love to spin on Playa. But I have another year or so before I feel comfortable enough to do it. It's great you have the skills to do it.

So if I were you, I'd hit up various theme camps and see if they want a DJ. Or you could just bring your gear, and look for a small camp, and wow them by spinning there one night.
