Virgin Burner who loves Music

Post by sunhorse » Tue Jul 15, 2014 12:21 pm

Hello Hello

My name is Sun Horse and this is my first year attending Burning Man. I couldn't be more excited! I have no expectations on the event and will be staying for the entire time. The best advice I think I've received is to get out of my comfort zone. Whether that means attending a workshop or class about something that makes me uneasy or what. I plan on doing that.

But, I also want to do things that I'm a bit familiar with and love. I'm not sure how to find out some of these things or if I need to just be a little more easy peasey. Neurotic planner mode is going out of CONTROL  !

Things I'd like to participate in:
Yoga. For some reason this seems like there's probably tons of it happening on the Playa, would love some confirmation and suggestions on places you've enjoyed practicing.
I'd like to do some DJing while I'm out there. I don't care if it's for a large stage or the back of a van. It's a talent that I possess that I love to share with the world. I play drum and music, if you don't know what that is, think fast dance music that doesn't have a 4x4 beat.
Meditation. Obvi there is tons of this, but what places have you enjoyed.
Native American Practices. This is something that I have a lot of experience with, I've gone on multiple vision quests and would love to meet some fellow Burners of a similar mindset and get together to pray.

I don't know how to find specific camps to reach out directly, so I'm open to any suggestions.

Can't wait to give some hugs and meets some peeps!

Hello Sun Horse! :)

There will be plenty of places to practice yoga! You can't go more than a few blocks without running into some camp who's offering it. The What/When/Where Guide you get at Greeters will list many opportunities.

DJing requires befriending a camp in need of one, or bringing all your own equipment and doing it yourself and bringing the party to you (which is totally allowed). Big camps sign up their DJs a year in advance, but small camps with sound systems might be open to your skills. DJs are everywhere, however, so be emotionally prepared not to find a gig.

I've never heard of a specific camp with Native American practices, but I imagine they're out there--or you can bring a sandwich board and paint a name and the time of day you plan to pray, and put it out by the road. If you wanna be a camp, you're a camp. (Too late to register for a reserved address in the city, but that is a minor concern).

People might assume illegal drugs are part of a vision quest, so watch out for strangers in search of that. Half of 'em are probably law enforcement. Heh.

How-dy,

Yeah, your mind is going to be so blown.... The event will be one giant vision quest, finding what is unexpected but wanted and needed, seeing yourself in others, stumbling into just what you want without knowing it... It will all come to you if you open your mind and wander. Most of what you seek is not my bag, but even so- Every morning when I go out and get coffee or ice, the folks in line are talking this yoga thing or that. In Center Camp, at the Man, at the Temple...there are always people doing yoga all over the place. The DJ thing is more difficult if you don't bring your own equipment. If you do, hell, set up outside your tent and let loose. The thing is, the DJs who bring equipment have it in their head that they are gifting to the community also, so them giving you access to their 2 turntables (hell, I don't know, but that's what it should be) might be difficult. As for the Native American stuff, that covers a very wide area. What tribe? There are all kinds of people you are going to run into who are down to earth, spiritual, respectful of nature, etc. I know there will be camps dedicated to visions along those lines, just scan the theme camp listings, but not for "Native American", that will more likely than not be missing, just what calls to you. And meditation, make sure at some point you head out into deep playa away from everything, some spot that isn't a place.

Thank you both for the advice! I thought DJing might be a stretch, because who isn't a DJ these days. And mainly I want to be able to give to the community.

I practice in a Southern tradition with 2 different circles actually, I'm a white guy and don't associate with any tribe in particular out of respect. Open to all things! Maybe I'll bring my pipe and a sign and hold ceremonies. Also, I'm sober and don't need the psychedelics for my spiritual journey, although I understand why people do use them. Maybe someday I'll change that perception...

Hello and welcome! Have a great time. Maybe I'll see you in 2015.
