First time (?) Burners - Hello!

Post by generator21 » Mon Mar 28, 2016 12:21 pm

Hi all!

After hearing bits and pieces about Burning Man from word of mouth, Reddit, the news, etc., I was bitten by the Burning Man bug and I, along with my fiance, feel it's time to actually go. Figured the best way to get started was to introduce myself here and say hello! We've recently graduated college and are now putting our boots to the ground in the corporate world. However, we've both always been the "off the beaten path" types and desperately need to check in with ourselves outside of working. Burning Man seems like a wonderful pilgrimage to contribute to a society that deserves it and gives wholly.

So far, I've done a TON of research into the First Timer's Guide, reading the entire Glossary, looking at what to bring, how to prepare, possible mishaps, water guides, food guides, etc. etc. etc. I even looked up the best shelters for life on the Playa, and my fiance and I are really set on constructing a hexayurt (in fact, I think I'm almost as excited to make this as I am about attending BM itself!).

I would love to hear from anyone else on how we can maximize our contributions to BM and any other great experiences you all have had out in the Playa! Thanks for reading

Hola and hello...

Yurts are awesome. I love mine. You're reading all the right things. If you do have a question and can't find the answer it's ok to ask about it  truly. Stick around and engage with us or you can stick around and lurk too.
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Welcome, generator21! :D

You sound like you're doing very well, keep it up! Keep reading. If you're looking for a specific topic here, google a keyword with "eplaya" added and you'll be in business. (Seeing a new question here is a huge rarity).

. . . And stop watching videos right about now, so there will be a few mysteries left. ;)

If you want to volunteer your first year, try Lamplighters in Center Camp around 4:30pm daily. It's a walk-up gig. Otherwise, taking care of yourself and leaving absolutely no trace are probably the best things you can contribute during your first year. Don't worry too much about gifting your first time out. Gifting can be casual and spur of the moment. Look for a need, and fill it. (It can mean helping someone pound stakes, or offering an electrolyte drink and a rest in the shade to someone who looks like they need it.)

Appreciate it!!! Looking forward to the yurt building process. Any tips on materials or things you wish you knew the first time? We're going to attempt the semi-folding hexayurt. What does your yurt look like?

I could never get the folding thing down right. I go with the standard h12 yurt but last year we made our walls 6ft tall, it was really nice not having to stoop going in and out the door all the time.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!
Elderberry

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me
