Virgin Burners from Dublin, London and San Francisco

Post by kaluart » Mon Apr 11, 2016 3:48 pm

Hello Burners,

We are a team of 5 virgin burners travelling to Black Rock Desert from London, Dublin and San Francisco for the first time in our lives. Super excited to become part of this amazing movement and so look forward to meeting all of you later in August! :D

Being first timers we are getting a bit lost when it comes to finding a theme camp to stay at. Can we please ask the experienced burners to help us with advice and recommend any camp(s) which we can join? I'll be happy to share more about our travel setup if needed.

Thanks!

Welcome! :D

There are literally thousands of camps (you're a camp--if you call yourself one), and there are probably a few hundred formally "placed" camps with proper addresses (because they apply, and have formally outlined what they will offer the rest of the city).

Joining a camp is not a must, but it can be nice depending on whether you're willing to give up a little time, work and independence in exchange for whatever infrastructure they provide their campers. In some camps the amenities are nothing but a group shade and an address, at others, it's a lot more than that.

If you're a seasoned camper and prize your independence above all else, name yourselves and be your own camp of 5. :) You will have plenty of neighbors, and can visit other camps all day long if you want to.

I have camped in many different ways: 1) at highly organized camps w/ fees 2) at no-fee camps that are strictly social 3) with just a rideshare "co-pilot", and 4) alone. (Although again: tons of neighbors, including friends). All of these approaches have their good sides.

You can see camps starting to look for campers in this forum:
viewforum.php?f=468

You can search by keyword through last year's camps and google them to see if they're going to be there this year:

If approaching a camp, tell them why you're a good fit for what they do, and lead with your skills . . .

Thanks for your replies!

Also can you recommend any BM-friendly RV rentals around Bay area? I realise this might be too late looking for the RV at this stage as availability is extremely limited but I still have some hope :D

Kaluart, Welcome. Don't think that you need an RV. Many of us camp in tents. The money you spend on an RV is more than it would cost to buy gear. Plus, who wants to be holed up in a box when you are cooking, sitting around camp etc... Shade can be managed with a 'sail'. It comes with telescopic posts. Secure with rebar. Renting a van is an option for a large group. Or a box truck or an SUV and a car. Don't despair if you can't get a motor home. Welcome to ePlaya and good luck. I hope to see you all at the Meet & Greet.

It will be very, very hard to get an RV close to SF at this point (most people make reservations very shortly after getting home from last year's burn) so I would recommend trying non-traditional rental cities, i.e. not the Bay Area.

Ratty's right, renting an RV is very expensive and they take many hours to clean in such a way that you will not lose your deposit and piss off the rental company. So if you can't find an RV, you might do well with a 2-seater cargo van and a pick up truck (or SUV), or a box truck for all the stuff + a sedan to carry people.

About half the citizens of the city are in RVs and the other half in tents (like me!) . . . so you will not be odd man out if you camp in a tent. Seriously! :)

PM me and I will give you the name of a Budget/AVIS dealership that is very burner-friendly (I use them myself) that can rent you a box truck. It's not cheap, but a helluva lot cheaper than an RV. And while we're talking, Barbie Death Village will at least entertain the thought of perhaps having you look at the advantages of joining us. We aren't for everybody, that's for damn sure, and many are called but few are chosen. In the meantime, if you want to look at the box truck, PM me and I'll help you out.
