Virgin burner photog from Denver
Hi All!
I will be attending my first BM this year and I am excited to meet new people and making interesting connections.
I am a photojournalism student in Denver, and I will be working on a social documentary about Burners.
I am hoping to find a camp that would be willing to adopt me and allow me to make photos.
looking forward to meeting

Welcome.
You'll want to go through the 2016 list of theme camps, see what they do, and what sounds like you might want to participate in, and contact them, see if they are taking new members. You'll need to be proactive in that. Or look through our Theme Camp forum here, see if anything piques your interest.
Have you cleared your documentary through the BMORG?

Welcome to eplaya.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

I'm not sure Barbie Death Camp is necessarily anxious to "adopt" you, but you're certainly welcome to hang out, take as many pictures as you'd like, and pick our brains. (Talk about slim pickins!) Make sure to drop by the Eplaya Meet & Greet Wednesday at 6 p.m. Many of our fellow knuckleheads will be there for the debauchery.

Welcome!
One approach is to allocate just an hour or two a day for focused documentary making. There is a lot to experience your first year.
Your own experiences are going to be more interesting than what you can capture of others' experiences. Personally try everything that interests you. The virgin year is special, you can never go back and have your virgin year again!
The audio from interviews is very hard to capture. The talcum powder size dust which turns into a 5' visibility storm gets into and ruins camera and electronics.
There have been a lot of discussion on main ePlaya and you can join in with questions there!
Google "documentary" "camera care" "camera dust" "protecting electronic equipment" "camera cleaning" site:eplaya.burningman.org

I don't know about finding a camp to "adopt" you, but one resource I'd recommend taking advantage of is the Denver Virgin BBQ & Burning Man Orientation Potluck on August 7th in Westminster. It's organized by Bobalicious, who is one of the Colorado Regional Burning Man representatives.

Any documentary MUST be cleared through the Burning Man media department (Media Mecca).panama_payne wrote:I am a photojournalism student in Denver, and I will be working on a social documentary about Burners.
emphasis mine The link above will take you to the right page.Media Mecca wrote:Burning Man is a private event, and photographers, videographers and documentarians wishing to capture images intended for public distribution are required to submit a proposal and sign use agreements prior to the event.
That said, there have been a million documentaries made by virgin burners - what's your fresh take on it? What do you plan to capture? I don't ask these to be rude, but to make you think. Just go to YouTube & look up Burning Man, and then figure out what you might have to say that's different - and also realize that none of those videos represent the real event. None. Zip zero zilch. They're all a bunch of lovely pictures strung together, but I've yet to see one that represents any of the Burns I've been going to since 2003.
There are multiple threads on protecting your camera(s) - the dust can destroy them, but I know many professional photographers who bring good equipment and get great photos. Personally I stopped carrying my "real" camera after my first year, when I realized it was blocking me from experiencing the event. YMMV.

If you do a documentary, some resources are the Census you can find on the main burningman.org website.
Several people have talked about ethnographic research studies, university theses, university lectures and papers on ePlaya, and somewhere is a burner social scientists group. Use your Google-fu against site:eplaya.burningman.org and site:burningman.org and against the Internet.
We have had many discussions about this. An idea is to make a documentary about you as you go through the experience. Charlie Goes to Burning Man on the http://burningman.org/event/preparation ... ers-guide/ page is a well made one.
We can be a little cross, because this very question comes up a few times a year, and we have answered it the same. And then when you talk to experienced burners in person, they will get this far away look, saying you can't possibly understand and then launch into mystical incomprehensible burner jargon. (for example find the Halcyon videos!)
But hey, do what you like and private message others who did what you are thinking to do!

So when I got in the helicopter in Hawaii the pilot said, "OK, cameras down. You don't want to miss this".

It most certainly is, if it's a video of yourself having sex.

Hey panama_payne, welcom to eplaya!
Denver for the win!
Like Papa Bear suggested, your best bet is the Denver Burner Pot Lucks. Also, sometime in the summer there is a organized "Burner Flea Market" type event that people meet and trade, sell, and gift each other old, new, or used burnen man stuff. I believe its in the summer but it might have been in the spring.
Here is a link to the Denver Regional Page: http://regionals.burningman.org/regiona ... ca/denver/
The email list, which should should definitely sign up for: [email protected]
And last and least is the book face link: https://www.facebook.com/DenverBurners/

Re: Virgin burner photog from Denver
Actually, I'd entirely forgotten about them (though I shouldn't have, they're a good resource). I was referring to Bob's virgin BBQ, specifically intended for first timers to the burn.illy dilly wrote:Like Papa Bear suggested, your best bet is the Denver Burner Pot Lucks.
The potlucks Illy is referring to are general gatherings held almost every Monday at the Fusion Factory, a burner-run art space across from Traxx nightclub. The same venue also hosts "burner bazaars" every few months. Joining the Denver Burners groups is a good way to find out the details.

Oh! Huh, and here I thought that was more like a "special edition" of the pot lucks. Learn some'em everyday!Papa Bear wrote:Actually, I'd entirely forgotten about them (though I shouldn't have, they're a good resource). There ya go! "Burner Bazaars" is the name of the burning man flea market/swap meets I was talking about.Papa Bear wrote:The potlucks Illy is referring to are general gatherings held almost every Monday at the Fusion Factory, a burner-run art space across from Traxx nightclub. Clearly, I have a firm grasp on burner community events in Denver.
