Heard a lot, looking forward to learning more

I'm hoping to make 2017 my first burn and wanted to get a headstart on it.

I was raised in the SF bay area but have been living in Israel for the last 10 years. I have been to a few rainbow gatherings and we have a regional mid-burn here too.

My twin-brother is a long-time burner who will probably make fun of me for wanting to go and say I won't fit in, but from all his stories and pictures combined with other friends who have gone, made art cars and shared amazing stories; I would like to experience it for myself.

I'm looking for information, advice and possibly a village for hopefully my first burn next year.

Everything you have heard is both a lie and completely true.

Personally, I shudder at the thought of Rainbow gatherings from what I have heard. You may find the contrast quite wonderful, no way to know but get a ticket and go.

Hushville is a good village for beginners, while you must bring all your shit, you will have friendly neighbors who will try not to let you die.

What sort of advice do you seek? Eplaya has an opinion on everything.

Right now I'm trying to figure out the best type of tent. I'm investigating the whole hexayurt things with the possible option of just using a canvas tent. Though it looks like the hexayurts would be more homely for 2 weeks. I am completely aware that there is almost nothing I can do to keep the sand from getting in anything I decide to use.

I'm not sure if hushville is the place for me, but I'll keep it in mind.

It sounds amazingly horrible, but I'm sure it's worth it. I've been camping a whole lot in the Negev desert, and sometimes the sand storms get up to the central cities here. Nothing like going to work and arriving covered in sand and dust.

(Does he do that a lot? Maybe he's trying really hard to establish a separate identity after a lifetime of being mistaken for you? But he doesn't have to go about it like that.)

What is this "fit in" at Burning Man concept, anyway? I could break my @#$% neck trying to be the weirdest person at Burning Man, and I would never, ever win. But if I was, say . . . the weirdest person someone ran into in a single morning, for example, I would be oddly pleased.

If you're flying from Israel, you might want a lighter tent than a canvas one. Canvas are relatively dustproof compared to most others, but they're large and heavy. Nylon works fine (I have only ever used nylon/polyester tents) but I avoid buying things with rainflies or tons of mesh, and sew up or zip up what minimal mesh I am compelled to accept.

100% he is just being a dick, he's not trying to establish some kind of separate identity.... he has that. We're fraternal twins, he's 6 inches shorter than me, lived a completely different life. He works now as some kind of burlesque fire dancer and owns a nonprofit for setting up Frisbee golf courses. I work managing online casinos and running background checks on people. We are the most dissimilar twins that have ever existed.

I'm moving back home to California in 2 weeks with my wife permanently. I was thinking of going the path of the Hexayurt. that seems pretty common and feasible.

I think the only thing I need to do to fit in more at burning man is start working out more so I feel more confident without a shirt on. Luckily I'm moving to a place right next to my old favorite swimming pool, so I can start doing that every morning.
