New burner from the UK - need advice!

Post by WildernessEnthusiast » Thu Mar 16, 2017 6:19 am

Greetings fellow Burning Man lovers!

I'm Jaz, a 23 year old woman from the UK. Hi!
I have such a strong appreciation for the outdoors, empathy, and sharing experiences. Myself and my best friend have always been drawn to Burning Man as it really reaches out to our characters - but because it's such a long way away we've never really had the money. This year we are going to take the plunge, get all our money together and head to BRC for the week. We are so excited to meet all you amazing experienced and virgin burners to share stories and memories with.

A few things i'm wondering and need advice on are:
- Would it be best to join a camp on our first year, as we've come such a long way it will be harder to get supplies than it would be if we were driving.
- Shall we rent an RV which would be easy to pick up from the USA, or pay for our tent to be shipped over from UK.
- Which airport would be best to fly into, Las Vegas?
- How would we go about buying a bike when we get to the USA? We don't want to fly into somewhere that doesn't have an easy access of shops?

Peace and love guys, can't wait to meet you all and make this first burn a great one! :P

Welcome.

There are a lot of topics here on eplaya, use google search to find them, or just begin browsing the forums.

Joining a camp is fine, however, many expect you to work shifts, and that might ruin your burn. You want freedom to just explore your first burn. Then there's camp drama, or camps which fall through on promises. Just browse, you have plenty of time to decide.

RVs are not readily available, many are already booked, and have you ever driven one? It would be cheaper to buy a tent here than have one shipped! Just make arrangements beforehand for someone to take it after the event.

Las Vegas is not close to the event, it is a day's drive away. San Francisco, with a connecting flight to Reno is closer. If you are going to drive a rental, other airports to look at are Boise, Idaho, or Salt Lake City, Utah.

You can buy a bike about anywhere at any of the big box stores like Wal-Mart. Huffy Cranbrook is the one you can donate to the Yellow Bike program. Otherwise, you can donate bikes off playa as you drive back, there are several drop offs. You can also look for the camps which rent bikes, all arrangements made off playa and off eplaya. The international burners who camped with us did that. No hauling bikes in and out. Whatever you do, do not leave a bike on the playa unless someone volunteers to take.

How much do you ride bikes now? It is nice to have one, but if you aren't used to riding, you will have playa bike ass. Start riding now.

Thank you AntiM!

I've been scouring ePlaya looking at all manner of topics, there's so much to absorb. I know for sure we will be the best virgin anti-MOOPers BM has ever seen. We have a real enthusiasm for this way of living.
It sure would be so much cheaper to camp in a tent, but then we would need a car right? To drive from the airport - to the entrance - to BRC? How far is the 'entrance' of Burning Man to the camp sites?
I'm a good bike rider, I just can't imagine the scale of BM. How long would the ride take from one side of the clock to another?

Thanks again, great help!

You will most definitely need a car to get to BRC, it is in the middle of nowhere, with zero public transport. Do look over the Burner Express, that may fit your needs. From the Gate to the city is several miles, bike and foot traffic is not encouraged/allowed.

It can take all day to get from one side of the city to the other. Nothing is in a straight line, and oh shiny. Squirrel. Playa time is a thing.

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Hello!

I think we are going to get a sleeper car - best of both worlds!

Trying to translate that into American. A sleeper car in the US is a train car with private rooms with berths. Camper van perhaps?

You're going to get a lot of different answers, but it looks like AntiM covered some really important stuff.

Vegas is NOT Reno and furthermore. IT IS NOWHERE. NEAR. BURNING MAN. It's OK - we all have our geographic misconceptions. Fly into Reno.

Gear is the biggest issue for those traveling to the event. There are a number of ways to handle it - shipping your tent is going to be a pricey way to handle it, but I don't know what your camping needs are, either. You're also likely not going to want to ship it back, as it's going to be hard to clean it adequately before packing it up. You never know, though. Some people like that big cloud of dust they get when they pop stuff out of storage from the Playa. There are LOTS of places to get gear in Reno, but it's also going to be pretty badly picked through by the time you get here. I'm an airbnb host and what guests have done with us in the past is hook up with us when they make their reservation and ask if they can have things mailed to our house for storage until they arrive. A nice advantage of this is you avoid overseas shipping costs as well as having the benefit of your order being fulfilled from a hub rather than being at the mercy of what is locally available, which will be slim. For us, holding things for guests hasn't been a big deal, but I'm sure some hosts would act weird or try to charge extra like it's a service. You just have to ask before you make reservations. On that note, also, give yourself a day or two as a buffer before you actually go to the event and after you return. Before, you're going to be jittery, you're going to have a bunch of last minute pick-ups, and you're going to need to orient yourself a bit. Afterward, you are going to be TIRED. If you want to stash gear at someone's place, I recommend shopping with Sportman's Outlet. They're an excellent outfitting store, you won't get price-gouged as you might with stores like REI or Patagonia, and you won't have to worry about getting weird off-brand stuff like with Amazon.

AntiM nails it with RV's. Plan on spending A LOT if you can find one. Chances are, however, you won't find one. If you opt for a tent, I recommend you look into buying some cheap cots, too - I got mine for $15 or so and it's a real game changer. Backpacker Pillow is a must, too.

Bikes are available in Reno through Black Rock Bicycles, The Reno Bike Project, Washoe ARC, and at all manner of thrift stores.

I wouldn't force the camp thing - there are both benefits and drawbacks to it. If you find something while you're poking through here that really catches your interest and you all really hit it off, go for it, but don't think that you need a theme camp to go to Burning Man. Some of my favorite years I was just off in a corner and that forced me to go out and meet people. Other times, you find that it's wonderful to roll out of your tent (in my case) into a pre-existing social atmosphere. You just kind of have to play that one by ear.

What happened to hike in/bike in? Is that gone now?

There is walk in camping, but you have to find a ride in from Gate to the outer road.

Figure it was due to danger / liability or was it because of panhandling for tickets?

I haven't seen a panhandler at Gate for years. Pretty sure they get taken back to Gerlach.

Hey Jaz,

Welcome home!!

So, driving from Vegas is possible, but it takes a long long time. It took me and a friend around 16 hours from the hotel in Vegas to the Playa. We got stuck in Reno for around 4 hours because U-Haul was trying to give us a panel van with two busted taillights.

Here is a stop motion video we took all the way from the hotel in Vegas to the Playa.

If I were you, however I would fly to Reno and go from there. From Reno it is around 3 hours to get to gate road, and then however long to get in. For us it was 3.5 hours in the queue on gate road the Friday before the gates opened. Others have reported 10+ hours in line on opening day.

Don't get discouraged by any of this though. Just make sure you fill your vehicle with fuel before leaving Reno, and you should be ok.

One other tip that I heard last time. Before you leave the blacktop and turn onto gate road, close the external air to your vehicle. They usually have two settings. Fresh air from outside, or circulate the air in there. Choose to circulate what is in there. If you do not do this, when you turn on the AC on the way out, first thing you will get is a face full of Playa.

Hope this helps you, and enjoy your first burn.
Vic

You seem to have toured around in the city quite a bit. Were you lost? Where did you camp? Oh, and could you pass the dramamine? I am seriously dizzy now. As they say in Tales from the crypt, "Thanks for the ride".
