Returning after 17 years

Postby LarryBMIII » Sun Dec 17, 2017 11:48 am

Hi All - I've been to Burning Man twice, in 1999 and 2001. I fully intended to return, but various family, (un)employment, and work schedule challenges have kept me from returning for seventeen years.

I'll be 63 in 2018, and I've been feeling the start of senior physical limits. So I've determined to return to the playa one last time, this year.

I have younger friends who are regular attendees, so I will probably hook up with one of their theme camps and ask their advice about tickets and other things. I'm on eplaya.burningman.org initially to get advice about making my own shade structures.

I'm excited to see what's new and what's changed since 2001!

Welcome aboard!

I first went in 2001, and have attended ever since. The event has changed in many ways, but is also just the same at the heart of it.

2017 was our first year (wife and I). I will be 63 in feb, we did the hardcore tent camping, took a lot of energy and planning but it was worth it.

For shade structure we had a monkey hut, it worked great, plans here.

Were looking forward to 2018, hope to meet you on the playa.

Larry, Welcome back. and Welcome to ePlaya. there are several great threads on shade structures. You can use everything from an umbrella to a costco carport. (They are called 'shades' when you buy em in the store. It depends what you are going to do in that shady spot. Do you want to put a tent in there? Go monkey hut. Do you want to lounge around with friends or just take a nap? A costco shade or a shade made of pipes and tarps.

It also depends on where you live and what vehicle you're driving.

Anyway, search around here and let us know if you need some answers. Welcome.

Thanks everyone for the greeting and advice! I've given myself a technical challenge this year - designing a shade structure that will contain my one-person tent and various stuff, but with a major restriction - all straight pieces of pvc pipe, no bending. The first two times, I built my own shade structures with pvc, so I'll be using that experience and new technology (such as pvc adjustable fittings). I'll be posting in the "Building Camps & Villages" discussion.

Larry, Where do you live? There are some regional events that would give you a chance to see the latest in shades.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. South bay, but I'm willing to drive to interesting events within SFBA.
