How about "Monsters" ?
The Man could be entrapped and imprisoned by the many tentacled
Nebulous Entity and guarded by Pirates.(kinda is already)
Center camp could be held hostage by a fire breathing chai spewing dragon.
We could fill the JOTS with various exotic spiders, centipedes and such.
Hmmmmmmmmm.

I Like It. We could make Monster Island out in the deep playa, as a hangout for whatever atomic mutations happen to show up next year....And there'd have to be a Wild Rumpus at dusk, every day! And we'd have to invite Charlize Theron....EvilDustBooger wrote:How about "Monsters" ?

Vote 3 for "Monsters"!
I'll also place on the table for consideration (again, because it bears repeating) — Elements!
Esplanade
Akasha
Earth
Fire
Lightning
Mercury
Air
Sulphur
Wood
Metal
Æther (Promenade)
"Animals" is a good idea, too. I'll host Wolf Camp

I think the "Monster Mash" thread got moved to the archives...I'm starting to lean towards "Monsters" instead of "Animals" now, too.... Not only would making monsters be just plain FUN, but there are so many ways to go with it...I have a feeling that 2006 will be a Monster Year REGARDLESS of the Official Theme.

The problem here is simply number of Burns versus number of anniversaries. 1986 was the first Burn and 1987 was the first anniversary of the first Burn.5x5 wrote:i keep seeing people online say 2006 is the 20th anniversary - which it would be, of the time larry made a man and burned him. but on my calendar and history it lists 2005 as the 20th burn, since the "idea" started the year before at someone elses party.....
i'm just curious if the same people who put together the calendar will be working on the "20th anniversary" stuff next year....
If you forget to count 1986 as Burn one, and just add 20 to 1986 (counting 1987 as one) you'll be making the mistake of thinking 2006 is the 20th Burning Man. 2005 was the 20th burn, not the anniversary of an idea.
Let's count: 1986 (1), 1987 (2), 1988 (3), 1989 (4), 1990 (5), 1991 (6), 1992 (7), 1993 (8 ), 1994 (9), 1995 (10), 1996 (11), 1997 (12), 1998 (13), 1999 (14), 2000 (15), 2001 (16), 2002 (17), 2003 (18 ), 2004 (19), 2005 (20)
So no 2nd, 20th anniversary calendar in 2006.
I will not fear. Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone . . . there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Ahh, ya buzzkill!
The author wasn't involved in the production of either of those films, remember? Sure, "Cat in the Hat" wasn't anything to write home about but "Grinch" was good.
Consider: they *were* going to do it with CG animation, but Jonez talked them into doing it live action. Maurice Sendak is half of the production team as is Tom Hanks. This movie shall not suck.

Hm. *is somewhat mollified*
Thing is, the book wasn't that long and didn't really have that much narrative involved... I can't help but feel that adding more material will by definition change the feel of the story. Presumably Sendak's presence/influence will mitigate that, but I still gotta admit to having some misgivings.

I'm not. The book is short but there's surprising depth to it. The theme of running away from home into a dreamland of your own making where you are king and have absolute rule and authority over what goes on there is a great theme to explore.
To be fair, I'm keeping a real open mind and I have a lot of faith in Tom Hanks.
Have you ever seen Maurice Sendak's sets and costumes for the Seattle Ballet production of the Nutcracker? Not a whole hell of a lot of story there, either (I have the original E.T.A. Hoffmann book), but he swelled it out to mythic proportions. The Mouse King is 40 feet tall.
They've already made a one-act opera and a ballet out of WTWTA, under Sendak's oversight, and he's been stewing and developing this project for ten years. There's good people and a lot of thinking and experience going into this.

Helixion- A Max-suit is a wonderful idea. Crown and all! RAAARRGGH!
Maybe Center Camp (TM) can add a "Night Kitchen"....

For the Santa-con. (Dec 17 Portland Or.) Aka The Red Rampage. I could not find a large stuffed raindeer for my mobility scooter. It already has a horse on it. So will be going with a Max type costume. Just tieing an antler on the horses head.
