mars, I don't see your username in the list at all. I don't think your account even got created. Maybe try registering it again? If you want to PM me your email address I can also try to identify it that way.

Yesterday much of the website wasn't working. Today everything I checked out worked fine. I don't know what was done behind the scenes but whatever was done worked for me. Thanks.

This can totally work

Post by airborne » Sat Feb 04, 2006 10:53 am

Hey Guys,

Great project, I'm really looking forward to it. I've been thinking about it and had a few ideas:

There seems to be two steps to the project from the point of view of the participant: remember to bring pixels, remember to show up to lay out pixels. What about coordinating with the greeters to have people drop off their pixels when they arrive at the city? The project could swing by at the end of each day and pick up the pixels and transfer them to a staging area. If each participant labeled how many pixels were in their donation (spraypaint or permanent marker somewhere on the roll) then it would be easy to put together an inventory of how many pixels of each color there were prior to laying them out. If the number's known ahead of time then it would be easy to scale the image accordingly.

Also, getting people to remember to bring their pixels in the first place accounts for most of the project's challenge. Coordinating with theme camps could make this a lot easier. Maybe starting up a competition amongst camps to see who can donate the most pixels with different categories based on big, medium, and small camps. If the pixels are labeled and dropped off it would be easy to also label them with which camp they came from. The first prize that springs to mind would be posters of the satellite image.

What do you think?

The main home page had some bad links. I had copied over an updated version and didn't do the best of job installing it :)

Since then however, I've posted two minor updates with no problems

I think dropping them at the greeter station removes some of the participation level, but it could be done if they're up to it. I do want each group of pixels labelled with black permanent marker. Probably put the row and column numbers on the pixels. Remember that assembling this on playa if each and every pixel is separate will take 4 days of 10 hours per day at best. We know that won't work so we need to be sure that people know to preassemble their pieces in order to cut down on assembly time.

Good idea. I do have a series of emails to the whole group written into the project plan. I really do want theme camps to get involved because it'll be through them and the regionals that we can really expand the base of participants
It's going to be alright.

Thanks for the support airborne :D

I know that Sputnik is really hoping to have theme camps take bigger roles in the project. One of our hopes is that theme camps (or people hosting regional events) will commit to bringing sections of 100. Then they can assemble a whole row or a 10x10 section off of the playa. This would make the on playa assembly much easier.

A few days ago I was concerned about exposure, and PR, but the JRS has really pointed quite a lot of people at the project.

Working with Theme Camps

Post by airborne » Mon Feb 06, 2006 6:47 am

I'm currently living in New York City and will be moving out to the Bay in June. I'd be happy to help meet with/round up support in theme camps in both areas.

I think the project's a great idea and I'm eager to help out in any way that I can. How's the BRAF proposal coming?

That's great airborne! I think this is exactly the kind of help we need atm.

I'm planning on throwing a large pre-burn / solstice party. I think I'll make a quick speech about it at some point, and maybe I can get enough commitment to do a row. I'll just say I'm going to have a party close to the burn, where we work on pre-assembly of an art project, etc. etc. :D

Not that I want to denigrate the project (I actually plan on participating in it) but I wanted to comment on the fact that I think the Burning Man event itself is artwork that can be viewed from space! at either rate, I will definately be purchasing a few peices for this project. :D

Fabric suggestion...

Post by Thatgirlagain » Sat Feb 11, 2006 7:37 am

I know it doesn't really matter at this point in time but can I suggest canvas (sail cloth, cotton ducking, etc.) as the fabric for the panels? Holds up to almost any abuse and will burn great! I'm so excited about being part of this, I'm ready to start.

The only problem I see with canvas is how to color it. Color sheeting can be bought precolored. Canvas would need to be dyed by the participant. Not impossible, but more complicated.
It's going to be alright.

Very true. Water based paint works pretty good if it comes down to it. I work with craft paints, etc. al lot. Depends of the level of detail you want to produce in the end. Any thoughts on what the picture may be?

Pants would be fine Bob. They'd just have to be joined together to be a meter square and be the right color. Go for it.

The other problem with paints is how well it will adhere to fabric if the fabric rolled or flexed. I really don't want big flakes of paint falling off all over the place. The level of detail is very coarse. Each pixel is one square meter (roughly a square yard) and is a single color.

The picture will be a surprise.
It's going to be alright.

Keep up the good work, Sputnik. I've been following the posting of the Project since day one (err, about since the first day of replies :D ), and think it's terrific. If you are going with any of the flat panel ideas, I'm sure COFFEE CAMP can bring 9-10 pixels (1m x 1m)? PM me or talk more in the Bar. If not anything, we might be able to supply little bursts of java to to the crew to help pep' up laying out the mosaic!

I'd just nail pants to the ground, as is. Everybody has some in the bottom drawer, and they're already the rough size of your module. Photolithographs leave a lot of white space -- no need to completely fill the grid squares.

HELP NEEDED

Post by regionalchaos » Mon Feb 13, 2006 7:06 pm

Howdy folks,

I could use some help with the website. Specifically, I'd like to have the confirmation email content re-written. It's pretty bare bones now. I'd rather spend my time fixing it up then writing the content, so if someone wouldn't mind re-writing the message. I'd be happy to cut and paste it.

Also, please feel free to PM me with any weirdness you might see or experience on the project website. I will try to address all that time will allow.

Thanks for the help, support and kind thoughts!

Over in the bar we talked a bit about a camp for megapixels.
CLARKcon wrote:(Sputnik busy, slips note in pocket, too) Sputnik, a Theme camp for MEGAPIXELS doesn't have to be too elaborate. I see the project like that of doing work at a building site. Have a good sized shade structure, place to rotate people in/out while placing the project, plus, our camp could bring the morning coffee to get people into high gear. How long figurativily (man hours) do you think it will take to lay out the project? Hours/days?
I certainly don't have time for anything elaborate. I just thought it would be a good idea to have a place for people who were in on the project to camp together if they felt like it. Last year I worked on the Quixotic Windmills and we had a group camp in snowflake village. There was absolutely nothing in camp that indicated who we were or what we were doing. We were on the backside of Snowflake, so we were close to esplanade which made it quick to get out of the camping area and to the project. I'd like to plan to camp as close to the project as possible. Heck, I even thought about camping at the project, but I'm not sure I really want to do that.

I have also considered having one corner of the project be a shade structure for the camp. Some folks have suggested a big trademark or copyright symbol. That might work.

How long it will take to put together is really hard to say. I did figure out at one point that if everyone brought a single pixel that it would take something like 5 days working 10 hours a day and placing a pixel every 2 minutes to get it all assembled. That's a bit unrealistic. I'm suggesting that folks sign up for no less than 5 pixels unless the absolutely can't do any more. The more pixels that come out pre-assembled, the less time it will take to put this together.

RC - everything looks fine. I'll think about the mailer and put something here later (though anyone else is welcome to too.)
It's going to be alright.
