Sorry to report that Smoke-in-the-Box is going the way of my friend Megapixels.
I only have 27 days to get it together and SitB isn't coming together. I'm stuck on the mechanism. I'm also not bringing my trailer and I can't carry something this big without it.
Nihil Desperandum, however! I'm getting together a pick-up installation. It is inspired by the recent veto of the Stem Cell Research Bill, will be one hell of a statement and will adhere to the Hope & Fear art theme. "Bold and snarky" come to mind. Here's a concept sketch courtesy of Photoshop:
I got the inspiration when I was blogging on the veto. One of the summing-up statements I made was "Hope IS at hand but that hand is nailed to the bloody cross." Driving around town, I visualized that statement and everything fell from there.
We have a couple medical supply places in town so I'll be going there for scrubs and lab coat and slippers. The figure itself will be lightweight and attached to a real timberpegged wooden cross. I'm thinking screws instead of nails for the double-entendre of religion and politics screwing with the hope of healing (also for better holding power). It will be illuminated, guywired in triangulation and standing somewhere out on the Playa. I'm going for a naïvist look because of the short timeframe.
