Not surprised. I need to hear from regionalchaos before I make the move. I think both your accounts have been enabled, so feel free to try and login. One of you could push us below 9900

You guys are awesome :D

Tonight is my shop night, I'll be out working on my dome for most of it. But I might put some more time into the site. Otherwise, the gf is taking off tomorrow night, so I'll be around to work more on it then as well. Once the site seems a little more polished, I think we should have a PR campaign, and really try and get the word out about this art installation. Has a grant application been turned in yet? When's the deadline for that?

PS. We're at 106 commited! Only 9894 left to go!

You know you are working on a good project when it spawns it's own themed side projects!

I've been keeping some of my friends updated about this project, and they all think it is very worthy. The other night my friend told me that he was thinking about making pixels for a small side project. Maybe doing his own 10x10, maybe a little copyleft mark, or a burningman copyright icon. He was thinking about switching it from day to day since it would just be a small section.

We're having a pot-luck in our neck of the woods the day tickets go on sale, I'll have to show the project off to everyone then!

I was looking at that pixel count and wondering when the project would get mentioned in the JRS.

The deadline for grant apps is Feb 15 or so. I'd like to have it finished up in the next couple of weeks.

I'll forward the spreadsheet I'm working from along with the grant app to anyone who wants to see it, just PM me your email addy.

My email is dan<dot>eklund<at>gmail<you know the rest>

I'd like to have a slightly more private forum to discuss logistics, one where we can throw out personal contact info without having to have it be out in public. I think the services I'm looking at for web hosting offer such.

Simple dimple. Just assign camps on the playa so that the sprawl resembles a portrait of Larry.

What 30,000 people as art look like (circa 1918)

Post by DoctorIknow » Thu Jan 05, 2006 7:22 pm

Image
(notice the angle: close up you can actually see the people)

Aerial photograph of 30,000 military officers and men at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Michigan, forming an emblem based on the shield that is part of the design of the great seal of the United States,

Mole and Thomas (the photographers) spent a week or more preparing for these immense works, which were taken from a 70- or 80-foot tower with an 11- by- 14-inch view camera. When the demand for these photographs dropped in the 1920s, Mole returned to his photography business in Zion.

In the Statue of Liberty, 9,000 soldiers are in just the torch, and 9,000 the entire rest of the image.

Actually something along those lines was how I got to this point. I did think about arranging tents in a pattern. Too much work though to get this right.

sorry guys been busy lately anyway I was thinking it'd be nice if you could, sputnik, take some of the picture ideas off this bulletin and post on website. But I was thinking more about pixelation and efficiency and stuff and I think it's imperative the image we choose looks good as black/white or simple like line art. If people don't show with a pixel or two it would be nice to improvise where necessary. If the image is complex enough to need certain shades of colors we might be harder pressed to 'fill in the gaps.'

Yeah, I'll go back and grab those images. I forgot they were there.

Image choice is always on my mind, but in the end it really depends on participation. If I were providing all the material, then it would be no problem to decide well in advance what the image would be and it could be arbitrarily complex. But since the idea is to have everyone bring pieces of this puzzle, we won't know how complex the puzzle can be until later. I'm planning on making a decision late in May, again, this will be based on support expressed on the web site.

Yes, I'm very happy about that. I know Tom personally. I actually met him and his family on my flight out in 04 (my first year). I really wanted something solid like this before I sent anything to the JRS for wider publication.

Question for you guys. Part of the grant application requires we show how we're going to raise funds to help pay for the project. Do you think a donation link would be taken well? What about using CafePress to create merchandise? Maybe both?
It's going to be alright.

Can you claim that donations of cloth are equvilant to funding donations?

We're having people donate supplies directly.

If you explain why the donation button is there and how it impacts the grant process, if you keep it transparent you shouldn't have many problems.

And if you put up a Cafe Press link you've got an automatic sale from me. Again I like this project.

Yes, Jim. Good idea. I'll put that in there. However, the budget currently is almost $5,000. I'd be surprised if we get half of that. It's possible that some of these items will come off or cost less should we change how we do this, but I'd rather plan high. Here is what I have so far:

Quantity Cost Total Cost

Satellite Time (cost per sq Km) 64 $22.00 $1,408.00

Xmas Lights, 50 Foot Packs 32 $10.50 $336.00

Crowd control fence (30m) 15 $31.50 $472.50

5' Fiberglass fence post 120 $7.90 $948.00

Zip ties (500 count pack) 5 $63.75 $318.75

Baler Twine, 24,000' 5 $30.95 $154.75

Industrial Fabric Staplers 4 $50.00 $200.00

Fabric Staples (5000/pack) 20 $20.00 $400.00

Grid stakes (rebar candy canes) 400 $1.80 $720.00

Truck Rental (Reno and back) 1 $700 $700.00

$4,958.00
It's going to be alright.

I wish that list would have been up right before Christmas, I bought a bunch of Christmas lights, both regular and LED varieties for cheap. I could even beat Wally World's clearance pricing and the place I went to had pallets of the stuff.

That's OK, Kinetic. For all I know the list of items may change for some reason. Let's presume for a moment that we only unfurl this thing to it's full size once and only during the day, then we don't need all the fencing and lights.
It's going to be alright.

BTW, I just went and got pricing for broadcloth in bulk. 20 yards is about $60. That makes the donation on the part of the community something on the order of $30,000.
It's going to be alright.

I have been following your progress and while waiting to buy tickets today decided to check out your sight. I think the galaxy pic is a great idea. it goes with the theme this year and imagine how much fun people would have after the fact saying I'm that star right there.

Are you still wanting more participants? Count me in. Are you hoping for money to get the things on your supply list or would you like others to bring them to the playa? I'd be happy help any way I can in the planning process. Perhaps I missed the post, but did you decide on an image yet? I like the idea of not knowing until it's done and just brining my particular piece of material.
