2006 BRC Midnight Manathon & 1/2 Manathon

Post by scubaburner » Sun Jan 22, 2006 9:41 am

Run a Manathon or 1/2 Manathon on the playa! Starts @ Midnight Friday Sept 1st. See below for details, email [email protected] if you want to run or volunteer!

*********************************

Event Description

The Marathon as Participatory Art
The theme of Burning Man 2006 is “Hope and Fear”. A marathon embodies the classic battle of hope for success against fear of failure, fought in the mind, the body and the spirit. On the playa the stakes are raised as the harsh environment builds fear while the BRC community inspires hope. Join us for this battle on the playa in 2006!

The race starts at midnight on Friday and runs the route of just inside the Esplanade. If you take 5+ hrs to finish your finish will be greeted by the rising sun on the playa.

Course
The route will start at center camp and circle around the inside of the esplanade, cutting across the playa from one end of the esplanade to the other, and finish at center camp. The last loop will be truncated to make the whole course 26.2 miles for the manathon and 13.1 miles for the ½ manathon.

Schedule
Race Start: Friday @ midnight
Rain/Sandstorm date #1: Saturday @ midnight
Rain/Sandstorm date #2: Sunday @ midnight

Water & Food Stations
Two water & food stations will be set up, one at center camp and one out in the middle of the route across the playa between the ends of the esplanade. The distance between stations is less than a mile. Friends of runners are encouraged to hang out at the stations to support their runner, by providing food/water, loud cheers, layers of clothing, etc.

Runners
Instead of randomly assigned race numbers, runners are asked to design their own “race symbol”, to symbolize their own personal struggle of hope vs. fear in the race. Race symbols can be made from portable neon, sown onto clothes, worn on hats, etc. Runners have the option signing up to receive an official “2006 BRC Midnight Manathon” t-shirt & medal.

The manathon and ½ manathon are open to everyone, even if you have never run a race before. Runners are responsible for their own training and safety. (Please see below for more information.)

Art Car Support
Art cars are encouraged to follow the route and support runners with music, cheering, water/food, inspirational poems, dances, or anything else that supports the runners battle for victory of hope over fear!

Theme Camp Sponsors
Theme camps are encouraged to sponsor runners! We are also looking for a theme camp to sponsor the awards ceremony after-party.

Volunteers
Volunteers are needed for staffing & artistic potions, including: staffing water/food stations, building & decorating stations, crafting medals & awards, and operating massage tables.

Bathrooms
Porta-potties reserved exclusively for race runners will be available at both water/food stations.

Race Training & Safety
The manathon and ½ manathon are open to everyone. The race is potentially very dangerous, and one must be quite insane to participate. (Like much of the interactive art at Burning Man.) Unlike other art projects, this one also requires that you be in kick-ass shape. Runners are responsible for their own training, safety and insanity. Join us in the ultimate in participatory art!

Interesting idea

I think you've got an interesting idea here. I'm curious to see what kind of response you'll get. If it actually comes together I'd seriously consider participating.
Good luck.

Midnight on friday is going to be pretty busy (cars and people on the playa) I'm not sure if thats the best time to do it but I'd be down.

Burning Manathon delayed till 2007...

Post by scubaburner » Mon Mar 27, 2006 11:12 pm

Due to other projects, so we're going to put off running the Burning Manathon till 2007. Of course, if anyone is psyched to run it 2006, then go for it!

Is the playa still warm about that time? Maybe even later would be good.

That'd be really awesome if the Manathon course went through the middle of the Jiffy Lube tents.

I am absolutely opposed to this part of it. You don't need a marathon / manathon running through the middle of JL for up to 5 hours....especially prime time hours at that.
