I am organizing The Grand Black Rock Road Rally
- only with bicycles, not automobiles*.
A Road Rally is an amateur event (not a race) that involves teams on bikes solving clues, collecting scavenger hunt items, and staging creative digital photos while navigating through Black Rock City. A Road Rally encourages everyone to participate. Teams may be required to interact with other burners to reach goals, or may just stop at a friendly camp for directions and navigation help. Bystanders often get caught up in the fun!
For each leg of the Rally, teams get a clue sheet that will guide them to the next checkpoint. Landmarks like streets, art installations, and theme camps will be used in anagrams and other puzzles as clues. Points are awarded for clues solved, questions answered, scavenger hunt items collected, and photos taken. Points are not awarded for finishing first! The winning team will receive the Grand Black Rock Road Rally Champion Trophy and everyone who participates will receive a special Road Rally souvenir. Everyone will also have fun for a few hours and get to think about their city in a new way!
Teams can be of at least three or more people. Each team member must have a bicycle and a water bottle. Each team must have a digital camera, a watch, a pen, a map of Black Rock City (the one you get when you arrive), and a name. A compass, bike baskets or backpacks, and clever minds can be very useful.
If you are interested in participating, please post a reply and register your team. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be posting more details as the burn approaches.
Rally On!

*Automobile Road Rallies
Each team of two people (driver and navigator) is given a set of route directions to decipher and follow. Usually the speeds at which they should travel are specified. The goal is to travel the correct route at the correct speeds, and arrive at checkpoints precisely on time. Since it is not a race, arriving too early at a checkpoint hurts your score as much as arriving too late. The clues refer to obvious landmarks, signs, roads, etc. but are designed to trick or mislead if not considered carefully.
Years ago, I won a few automobile Road Rallies in Arizona. Once I moved to Madison, WI, I started getting into organizing bicycle Road Rallies. I found it to be a great way to get to know parts of a city otherwise overlooked in a car. Visitors, new and long-time residents all have fun discovering little-known neighborhood attractions. What better place than BRC to discover similar things?

sounds like fun!
and what a great way to poke around the playa/BRC as well. my dad used to run auto rallies in socal and the sf bay area and they were a blast to do. i sent a copy to my campmates as something to do (in addition to all the other twenty things we've got planned) and i'll let you know if we sign up. you might want to also post this on the burning bikes tribe at tribe.net we organized an art bike parade last year and had a great time.
peace,
