Speak of THE MANY to us.

Post by HelloKitty » Wed Apr 19, 2006 8:04 pm

The Many is a reference to characters from the video game System Shock 2. They are bio-engineered organisms with genetic modification abilities and a hive mind. They represent the fear many people feel towards both the callous genetic modification of lower organisms, and the continued erosion of individuality as we move into an uncertain future. Once simple worms, man genetically modified these creatures and then lost control over them. The Many has evolved into a powerful hive mind that threatens to engulf everyone and everything it comes into contact with, erasing all traces of individuality by making everyone just another part of the group. When first coming into contact with The Many, it proclaims its superiority with a simple message, “What is a drop of rain, compared to the storm? What is a thought, compared to the mind? Our unity is full of wonder, which your tiny individualism cannot even conceive.”

The theme camp The Many celebrates the radical individualism of Burning Man by encouraging each individual within the camp to offer a different public experience to the citizens of Black Rock City. Unlike other theme camps where everyone within the camp is focused on providing a unified experience based on specific camp theme, The Many reminds Burners we are each unique and provides an opportunity for people to express themselves. The challenge to individuality within Black Rock City is that, in a community where 40,000 people are trying to stand out, it requires a great deal of infrastructure to get any message out past a very small audience. The Many helps its members get their message out to a much wider audience by providing that infrastructure.

The Many reminds Burners that it is all too easy to lose your individuality, even in a city dedicated to radical self expression. It confronts people’s fear that in the future Burning Man will evolve out of our control in ways that may threaten our individuality. Many people fear that, as Burning Man evolves, it will do so in ways that continue to restrict people’s ability to express themselves. Even though we understand that as Black Rock City grows it must change and evolve, we are dedicated to providing an infrastructure that allows people with limited resources to express themselves and be heard in the community at large.

Well Hello, kitty. That's a wicked awesome Trogdor avatar you have there. I couldn't think of a better way to promote "radical individualism" than by assigning your self the screen name of a cartoon pop culture icon, and basing your theme camp on a video game, or maybe I could?

At any rate, good luck with your project.

We won' be a 24-7 sound camp!!! We don't want the trouble or clean-up. The Many will be bringing music to attract flesh but only at certain times. We are from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
We hear........flesh.
