Three first-timers looking for a fun camp to join. There's me and a couple of women...we've got all our gear, we just need a place to stay, and some friends who are old hands at this tell me I *must* stay in a theme camp...

I'm willing to pitch in and assist with what you need so I can get that spot...problem is, we're coming up Wed, probably (maybe Thurs), and so can't help with construction. Otherwise, I'm game for helping with anything...

Okay, good idea...

I'm a big guy, so I can lift heavy things, um, gut fish...let's see...the two women coming with me aren't good at much besides looking pretty, but I can make up for their sloth...oh, but we're all pretty fun and out-going, so we're at least all good at getting along...

Other skills: I can use all basic construction tools, like hammers, saws, drills, shillelaghs, etc. My background is in film, so I'm good at staying calm and managing a catastrophe, which is what I hear BM is akin to. I'm a pretty good painter, too, and creative, so body/face painting is an option...

Hmm...I'm a writer, so I could write/perform a play with my friends for your amusement/derision. We'll also have an SUV and a 3-room tent, so if you need a place to crawl out of the heat, we'll have some space for that. Oh, what else--typical camper's gear: stove, lamp, etc. etc.

Pretty much a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-few, in other words.

You absolutely don't need a theme camp, especially the first year.

You can create your own theme camp. But you don't need to.

My advice: go prepared to take care of yourself, and look for work once you get there. Bring a pair of gloves and a hat. Bring only your best energy and tequilla. Love yourself and your chapstick, drink plenty of fluids.

You'll be fine.

Okay, we'll take the girls if they can work the dance pole and are of the proper age and temperament, we've got another plan for you. Very centrally located, very grateful for the help, which is a bit physical and a bit messy (like gutting fish, only with cans and a Crusher). Meals included, all the cold beer you can drink, 4 hour shifts a day for the duration of the event. Sound good?

You'll be off at night and free to roam the playa, as well.

Oh...32 for me, 28 and 23 for the women. As for working them...well, for the younger one you'd need the jaws of life, and the other you'd have to get in line behind me. At least that's what I'm telling myself. But, whatever, we're all free there, right?...if you can get her, take her. :)

I've never made espresso...don't even drink coffee, actually. It's about the only thing I don't drink.

I'm looking into shade for myself already...what size is "communal"? And is the fuse position available for the cannon of doom, or is it just fodder now?

Well someone's been hitting too many salespeak manuals.

well you do pass the age test to camp with eplaya bar camp, and bringing eye candy might tempt rockdad into inviting you. We have communal shade for the private portion of the camp, but not the public part. I don't recruit for apokaliptika, so I don't know what positions (if any) are open. esspresso dude might be willing to train.

browse around some of the threads in this forum to get a sence of the personalities. Or got to the main site http://www.burningman.com find the link to theme camps and start reading through. See if any are still accepting and contact any you feel an affinity for. (You may have to pay dues.)

And you don't have to camp with a theme camp, just because it works best for your friend. Plenty of people swear by walk-in camping and/or getting friendly with your randomly associated neighbors. It's a varied event with no one right way that works for all.

If you don't mind serious work you might contact The Flaming Lotus Girls. They are staying in Illumination Village. By the time you arrive the Serpent Mother will be complete, but I know they need help for tear down, and working the perimeter on Friday afternoon and evening while we prepare for the Friday FLG fireworks display. Ill Vill is one of the larger Villages and we have all of the infrastructure. This year we bought a 70KW Whisperwatt genny so power is not an issue. There is a fee of $50 per person to camp with Ill Vill. There would be work that all of you could partake in. Ill Vill is basically a group of fire artists. Dr. Mega Volt is returning this year and will be at Ill Vill. We are based in SF, CA. If you need a contact, PM me and I will give you the email for our mayor, the beautiful, Mistress Megavolt.

Your construction/big guy-lift things qualifications are a great asset, unless you won't be there early (d'oh!). By Wednesday or Thursday, most theme camps should already have their stuff set up.

However, if you're willing to put in that commitment (of time/labor), teardown and MOOP patrol (meaning you wander around and pick up the bits of matter out of place) are things most bigger camps would/could use.

The above camps are great possibilities if they wind up having some room for you. Otherwise, do as mentioned above and check the list of theme camps and start surfing around to find one that you like that may still be open. I can think of two decent sized camps that appear pretty organized and last time I checked were also taking on new members...

You may want to look around in Santa Barbara for a local camp to throw in with. This way you can help with local fundraising events or work projects beforehand... offhand, I can only think of the supremely awesome group known as The Clan Destino. They do wonderful things off and on the playa, and are some of the most wonderful people you could hope to meet. Here is the link to their place on Tribe.net.

Ok, seriously. You can have a great time just camping by yourselves and randomly going around offering to help people. Meet your neighbors, share meals with them, all that stuff. If you go in with the attitude of willingness that you show here, you'll get along fine wherever you end up.

if you didn't sound so big, strong and capable i'd worry that you were Little Red Riding Hood in the forest with a pack o' wolves...oh the delightful lechery...over an unsuspecting newbie...
However, we are still taking new members and we don't require singledom or gropability to join.
We are the Red Nose District....we are as you may guess a circus camp at 7:30 and the esplanade.

we do have a camp fee but we also have a lot of amentities and have worked very hard to bring out a great show.
My first trip to BM 9 years ago was to a theme camp on the esplanade and i have produced a camp every year since...always on the main strip...have never wanted it any other way.
I have to say we are an eclectic fabulous crew of 130 so far....independence with in a haven of activity and belonging and dinners ta boot if you so choose.

When I went for the frist time the village I was going to camp in was full by the time be arrived on Wednesday. No biggie, made our own camp a few blocks away and harassed others.
