Scooter scooper - the artcar Avenger

Post by seandee » Mon Sep 08, 2003 9:23 am

One drifty night on the hammocks my meditive visions were shattered
with the booming voice
"SCOOTERS are NOT art cars"
although somewhat annoyed by the timing
- the individual in question had echoed a sentiment of
mine for motorized vehicles of any sort on the playa/esplanade
- just putting a teddy bear on them thar handles is a
lame attempt at camouflage. I really liked one person's idea of a
flying carpet - mo' shit like that please.
 This later spun on in my brain with crazy fantasies of the jawas'
sandcrawler (Star Wars-where the droids end up on Tatooine) opening up
a huge maw to capture the poorly decorated scooters and carting them
off to a pink furry lined "jail" - but I imagine that a few folks may
not take it in good fun depending on what you injest (multiple guys in
glowing eyes and shady robes pokin' fun at ya).

I do think some modified form of an art car avenger/scooter-scooper
would be fun though. Say, some sort of helpful "modification" area
where the scooper carts the driver and vehicle off to be altered... and
if they are too chicken, a special paper wrap that looks like tar and
feathers would be the prize. There could be all sorts of burnable
materials that could be used for the decorations, in case they don't
want to stay with the decorations when it is done. One could also use
up some of the left overs from playabikes and costumes - fake furs,
baby heads, extra EL wire and LED doodads and MOOP recycling gewgaws.
With the precaution that the person knows these aren't burnable.

It'd even be fun to give them a "manual"
with a pamphlet format along the lines of Using Your New Playascooter.
Replete with helpful lists of imaginary road signs, proper lighting of the rider, general safety stuff .
For example every twenty words on one page could have the "subliminal" italics DRINK WATER.
Of course if they reeeally felt bad some one could give em a nice ol' paddlin' if they're nice.
Any suggestions or input out there?

i took my bike ( 21 speed, not a scooter ) to brc this year and didn't use it once. i'm considering an art scooter for next year, provided i can afford the sucker. i like the idea of creative alterations - i would gladly kit out someone's naked art car with leopard fur, plastic flowers and gold lame. i could be an exterior decorator, playa style.

thanks for the idea

plastic flowers? gold lame? why not just do what most do and sprinkle it with glitter and call it an art thing? it's time to encourage a giant break from the crap costumes and plastic whatchamacallits that folks call "participation". It's an extreme art event. Make it extreme!

Wait.. I don't get it. A scooter will get you there quicker, but is more dangerous to you and others... and you said you didn't even ride your bike? Why didn't you use your bike? Bike's are awesome on the playa, except in 2000 when it was mush, but scooters sucked too.

And as far as more creativity with art cars/scooters: I totally agree with getting creative ... I take exception with your comment though, seandee and pops. Maybe you shouldn't pass judgement so quickly on folks and their (possibly) inferior imaginations. Not everyone can really stretch their imagination....but that's something you get out of bman, right?

Also, you just trashed Princess Strych9 who has graciously volunteered to help out ... hmm.

I like the idea of collecting art cars, and putting them in a certain area to 'rest' ... and for their owners to find, eventually... LOVE the Jawa thing, whatever it's called.. I wonder if we could really do it?

I think the sandcrawler Idea is great. Stock it with the items needed to modify naked scooters & don't let them out till they look cool.

I'll be a Jawa.

OK, so scooters aren't art cars - that's partly becuase, like bicycles, they aren't cars...

If undecorated bicycles are riding around, why not scooters? Sure, everything is better at Burning man when decorated, but should it be *required*? Where do scooters fall on the evolutionary scale from bikes to cars?

My scooter is electric - so not much noise problem there, and I meant to decorate it as a shark fin, but ran out of time..

So what about electric bicycles? is it the bicycle's shape that makes it exempt from manditory decoration? if so, what if I put pedals on a scooter?

has not a scooter handlebars? If you push us, do we not roll? If there is wind, do we not slow down?, if you leave us unlocked, are we not stolen?

How about an aluminium foil covered art car tank outfitted with a paint ball firing machinegun and paint ballons to help decorate the offending vehicle and its occupants? Eh, too much moop.. Well, crap..

Had a concept all worked out... a skiff on wheels, towing a detachable cable spool wound w/ a hundred yards or so of orange trash fence...

beats red-tagging...

I believe you were referring to pops in that "trashing" thing, which he graciously mea culpa'd later
- my original seed was precisely the thing that nodule referred to: like costumes and whatnot
- not everyone gets to prepare their schtuff...what is more constructive?
+++bitchin' at someone about motorized transport+++
+++or helpin' out the situation with a little fun and frolic yo.+++

I am doing the craig's list thing for a van right now,
within a week or two I'll know {after the tune-up and carburetor repair}
if this will take the form of said sandcrawler
or even the orange fence wrappin' skiff :)
or some other crazy thang
not
involving
a movie
reference-

I forsee myriad legions of crap flying out of my house
and funneling through E-bay to fund the good stuff
like a big ass tongue or spare styrofoam walls etcetera

I don't care about undecorated or not. Decorated is better, but so are decorated bikes and people. It seems to me scooters are often lighter and smaller than bikes so safety doesn't seem like a big concern if they're run at reasonable speeds.

I care about the noise and speed that some of them exhibit. That's all.

Ban two cycle engines or figure out a way to make them quiet and recruit people to capture and disable scooters that have been run too fast.

Decorating-Mobile

Post by Thrilljunkie » Sun Jun 06, 2004 8:57 pm

If this decorating-mobile idea becomes a reality I'd like to help operate it one afternoon. Sounds like a fantastic way to meet people, have some fun and spread some cheer.

Oh, what about a ribbon cannon thingy for shotgun style instant decoration? hehehe just kidding

*****The following is for entertainment value only*****
An effective and cheap way to disable a scooter belonging to an obnoxious owner (without permanent damage) would be to remove the valves from the tires. You can buy a cheap valve stem tool at any auto parts store for around $3.

Or for a more visually shocking method, coat the throttle in spray foam. The stuff is incredibly hard to remove once set but will come off without damage if enough patience and time is spent. (note: you'd have to cover the throttle in a bag first to keep dripping foam off the playa.)

oh please please please do this because there are alot of us who have problems with our feet and stuff that don't qualify for handicap status. last year i didn't see much compaired with what was out there and can't bike all that far in a sitting. the most i saw was when i hoped a ride on an art car but they are not exactly taxis. i have a small motorcycle that would be so perfect for my transportation needs but no idea how to decorate it to the satisfaction of the dmv. a place to take it to be decorated would be so perfect!!!!!

mf

if you follow the rules, you will not be allowed your motorcycle on the playa if you only plan to do an ad hoc decoration at a camp. Unless you are truly disabled.

How about you go to DMV and tell then you need some thing special. They are not hard asses. You could make a costom of moon and stars and ride as Kid Gallix or some thing. Ask some of the burner in Portland to help. I'm down in Salem.
