4 more years of bush.....we're fucked...!
Hold on folks.
Looking on the bright side...
Well, at least this way Bush doesn't have to declare martial law, and/or fake or allow a terrorist attack in order to hole up in the white house with his kin in every window with rifles...

Yes, I'd say you are. I'm sorry you guys.
I'll predict more 'terrorist' attacks on your own soil and abroad, a further weakening dollar, and more steps towards a military state.
Bush has less than a 5% approval rating world wide, and yes, the rest of the world doesn't live in the US, but the US government definitely thinks it runs the rest of the world, so this doesn't bode well for international relations.
I hope I can get across the border for BM next year. It's only going to get harder.
Sigh. ((((((((((for you))))))))

At this point I am hoping that Ohio goes for Bush. My original hopes were for Kerry in the popular vote and a clear Electoral win. As it stands now if Ohio goes for Kerry he will be facing a Republican House and Senate on a shakey start.
If Bush takes Ohio we will be facing repressive measures but I don't see much too over the top and four years from now the Republicans will totally own the war in Iraq, with its thousands and thousands of US dead, it's incredible money sink and an inflation rate pushing 10%; while at the same time there will be no movement towards reducing the terrorism threat. All that may not wake up the religious nuts but will probably wake up the frightened folks.
Something that I found interesting in the Washington Post this morning.
I work across the street from the FBI building and about 4/5 blocks from the White House and I am not that worried but people living in Podunk are scared? I will admit it I do not understand.
The killer response and the one with the biggest percentage was:
21% Moral Values, 78% of the folks that responded with this voted for Bush. I have no idea how people with mindsets like this operate and am at a loss what could get through to them.

Ok, So America wants an anti-intellectual, anti-social safety net, pro inherited wealth two class society. A society that drives abortion back into the back alley butcher, and homosexuals back into the closet. America rejects the idea that issues have any subtly or nuance every thing can be seen as black and white. America believes if you give over to the higher power of government enough of your personal privacy it will protect you from evil doers and people different from your self. America learned it's lesson in grade school the toughest kid with the biggest stick got everyone's lunch money and that's good. America is confident in it's superiority of moral values and considers it it's duty to make the rest of the world over in it's own image. America believes if we can provide a cheep enough workforce to multinational corporations and don't hinder them with environmental, and safety regulations or taxes we'll be competitive with China.

I think what people are missing is that the Democrats are increasingly seen as the party of the urban elite. They have lost touch. This campaign was built on criticism, not education. Rather than lay out a clear plan, they simply harped on the Republican plan. If you want people to leave their boat and get on yours, you had better do more than just criticize the boat they are on, you had better explain where your boat is going and why.
Even in states that Kerry carried handily like Maryland and Illinois, he only carried the urban counties. Look at a map:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/ ... index.html
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/ ... index.html
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/ ... index.html
The Democrats have a serious perception problem when it comes to people outside of the urban areas that they need to address beyond just criticizing the Republicans. When many in the heartland consider a country run with Democrat ideals they see crack hos selling their fetus to a biotech company for stem cell harvest. This scares the living crap out of them and presents a spectre of a world they would not want to send their sons and daughters out into.
THAT exact issue is one where the people of the heartland feel the Democrats don't get it. My Mom raised that issue with me in a conversation and she has been a Democrat all her life. She is a pretty cynical woman. She knows that when stem cell harvest is allowed from a fetus, big biotech business is going to want more in order to compete. An unborn human becomes a potential commodity. Once there is a market for them, someone will step up to fill that demand. Nobody that I ever talked to has been against stem cell research. What some have been against is harvest of them from a fetus. THAT is ONE issue where there is a BIG disconnect. The Democrats are seen by many as cold, uncaring, and spouting pseudo-science to advance their social goals. Stem cells have not shown ANY signs WHATSOEVER of being able to treat Alzheimers or spinal cord injuries. The Democrats say if you are against stem cell harvest from a fetus, you are hurting your grandmother with Alzheimers. It is a lie. A very cruel lie. People know it and it makes the Democrats look stupid.
Another issue is religion. You can't have a bible study meeting in a school but you can have a polling place in a church. People have a perception that not only do the Democrats have no respect for people's religious values, but they actively do what they can in order to stamp out any form of religion wherever and whenever they can.
The issues are not Iraq to most of those people, the issues are deeper. There is a basic feeling that a society run by Democrats would be a culture ... a CULTURE ... of the government, by the government, and for the government. It scares the shit out of them. There is an uneasyness that Democrats think people's paychecks are owned by the government and the amount of it you are allowed to keep is a matter of how "worthy" the government finds you of it and that can change from one year to the next. Tell someone that has scrapped and scrounged all their life to buy a home that the government has decided to jerk an additional 10% from their paycheck to pay someone ELSES medical bills and you are going to get some pushback. Kerry ownes six houses. He won't get a sympatheic ear from people that can't hardly afford one but are well enough off not to need government programs.
The Democrats need to stop trying to create a government that is an omnipotent mommy. The people in the middle don't need another mommy. The majority of the people in this country don't need anyone to "take care of them".

"Darth Vader" ...I like that...
Though personally I refer to him as Mullah Ashcroft. Bible on the desk...yeesh...[shudder]
When I saw how much of the country was red, I about sprung a grey streak. I looked at them all and I thought, "What are you thinking?!?" I knew Bush would carry Missouri, when I saw the town hall debate and everyone crowding around him, and thinly-veiled barbs sent at Kerry, I just wrote it off. "Oh, well, it's Missouri. Traditional Values Central." I knew Idaho would be on board, too. Heck, I even forgave my mom when she voted Bush. She's in California, which I knew was a slam dunk for Kerry, so I thought there's no harm in letting her go ahead and vote according to her conscience. She thought he was a good man. I don't know. My mom has a talent for seeing good in everything.
A little bit of that did rub off on me. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. If nothing else, during the Bush administration, mortgage rates plummeted to the lowest I've seen in my lifetime. For the first time in my life I actually thought a house would be within my meagre reach. This is probably pie in the sky but I'm hoping it stays that way because the pre-fab housing market is strong here and you can get a decent house for $100,000 if you shop smart and aggressively.
Meanwhile...I'm gonna make up a "Have we caught Osama yet?" bumper sticker. As for Mullah Ashcroft...I hear he's flying the coop this year. Unfortunately so is Colin Powell and he was the sole voice of moderation in that administration...

You know I can accept that Bush won no problem. What I hate it all of this bullshit that the democrats did this and did that and yaddie yaddie yeah. You people that are standing up for republican ideals and all of that shit are as blind fruit bats at high noon.
Who started what? I saw Bush attack ads before I heard Kerry knocking anyone else's boat. Tell me otherwise. Yeah, Kerry blew it all those years ago when he started flipping and flopping like a frankenfish dragged out of a Michigan river. And sure he probably was jumping up and down on Fonda like some kind of pin cushion trampoline too. But you are not going to tell me that the democrats were the only ones slinging the shit.
Give me a break. Bush won. Let’s cut the crap on why, and get over it. In two or three years when your civil rights are dropping faster than an unexplainable case of snake rain in Texas, then tell me about how much you love Bush. Keep justifying it in your heads, because that is all you will have by that time.
And god forbid that there is another terrorist attack. Like the old man told me a few years back, (insert gravelly voice here) “it’s only a matter of time before the United States falls under Marshall Law, either that or after one more major terror attack. And this guy didn’t quite outlive his favorite president: Reagan.

see the Stand and Fight thread, especially the Chris Sanders article.
I've always supported gun ownership rights, but if we have to be licensed and tested to drive an automobile, seems like common sense to ask the same of gun owners.

It that was the one right leaning position that the dems could have adopted, while retaining all other positions, I believe that Kerry would have won. I would love to see a left-driven shift that embraces being outspoken and armed. The image I hope to see one day? The right DOES have the guns and know-how. And the right seems to have the lock on these tools. It's time for a change.

I was draft age the year the Vietnam draft was phased out, and I regret today that I didn't do some time in the military, although I was pretty revolutionary at that early age, and very much opposed to our actions in Vietnam.Simply Joel wrote:i have always suggested the left needs to join the military and defend the constitution, as well as act like a check and balance to right wing servicemembers.
That training would have been a perfect foundation for my current beliefs and a perfect counter to the right that have figuratively stolen the word patriot and the flag. I flew a flag proudly after 9/11, and wasn't alone here in Santa Cruz. I don't feel comfortable doing that today. It means something different again. That saddens me.
