Well... This IS caravansary-related, right?

It is, even if it's a rework of an old Johnny Carson insult to Ed McMahon when he was playing his character 'Karnak the Magnificent'.
First, Johnny Carson, then Jay Leno, now a new guy.....fuck, i'm getting older.....I'm on my third 'Tonight Show" host.

Re: CARAVANSARY
i noticed the similarities today between our public market, here in rochester, and the Souk, the Caravansary.
It is one of the oldest and most successful public markets in the country.
it is the only place, where on any given saturday, you can hear 50 different languages, see 50 different shades of skin color and have young and old attend.
sure, it's got great fruits and veggies, and socks and spices and dvd's and donuts, milk, eggs and cheese, but you can get those ANYWHERE.
this is a social thing.
people actually come out of their cloistered suburbs to venture into the heart of downtown.
its beautiful.
it's a safe zone, a free city within a city, all are welcome, nobody hassles anyone else, unless it's in a good natured ball-busting rochester kinda way.
and people talk....they tell stories, they enjoy the scenery, argue politics and religion, play chess and drink coffee.
it seems to be a great equalizer...EVERYBODY goes to the market, don't shit where you buy your peaches, duh...
i think that Larry, in his infinite wisdom may have fingered something out...
We need the Souk....we need the Sanctuary and the free flow and exchange of ideas and cultures.
all animals go to the watering hole...even godzilla

Simon, after going to the local farmer's market on the weekend, I would agree with you.
While we don't have chess players, we do have the coffee.
We have more fresh fruits and vegetables than most, since we're in the heart of the corn belt. Not only do we have the fruits and vegetables, we have the legacy heirloom seeds and plants available. NO GMO shit. It's also the heart of innovative commerce. One vendor sells honey ice cream. It's like heaven, because there's no high-fructose corn syrup involved, and he's a beekeeper. His ice cream ranks up with the best of the local custards as far as taste goes.
It doesn't end in the winter. It moves into a former mall, and even higher education gets into the game. University Extension comes in each fall and sells chestnuts during the chestnut season. Ever hear of butternuts? They're highly sought after for candies, but they have the trees locally....better known as white walnuts.
Languages? On a weekly basis, French (one beekeeper I know of), German (Amish and Mennonite vendors), Korean (vegetable vendors), Chinese (vegetable vendors), Japanese (vegetable vendors), English, Farsi, and Arabic. Politically, there's a range across the spectrum. AND, live music performances 'set the stage' if you'll pardon the pun.
We hold ours right across the street from a major grocery store, and the farmer's market does more business when it's open. Plus, you can't get fresh goat's cheese at the grocery store.

Ok, I suffered through all the camel comments and I need to know just how the marketplace is going to work, any ideas?

Sorry, I can't seem to get the link to the song to embed. You can find it by going to YouTube and searching for Caravansary Street.
I've been to 12 Burns, but can't make this years. So this song came to me. I know its not perfect, but my friend helped me and we recorded it in about an hour in his garage. Would love it if anyone wants to adapt or re-record it. Anyway, hope you like it and hope you have a great Burn.

Do you have BBCode on? It's not the default, so it's kinda mind-fucky. Go to your control panel or do it just when you want to imbed things.Grokstar wrote:Sorry, I can't seem to get the link to the song to embed. You can find it by going to YouTube and searching for Caravansary Street.
