Re: hello from st. louis, missouri !!
AHH.. in certain ways I really miss the "Lou".
Spent nearly a decade in Soulard. Sadly I didn't get the BM bug till after I left. I did hang out with peeps from the city museum, who year after year took a project to the burn that I watched being built. So clearly there is a burner presence there, just a matter of hooking up with the right folk.
Rock with ^Rhino's suggestions and you'll get there. (@^Rhino, sorry I didn't make your acquaintance while there)
Meanwhile, revel in the possibilities that St Louis offers. I had 1800 sq/ft with 18' ceilings in Benton park for an art studio that I paid $340/mo for. Now that I am in SoCal I struggle to get my stuff built in a 2+ car garage that I pay twice that to keep.
good luck, we are all counting on you. Bring some toasted ravioli. Drewe's won't keep (though I still cant stand provel on a pizza)

you do realize that all of that was tongue in cheek.
I am not from actually from St Louis, I just spent some time there, and was having fun remembering all the things I appreciated about that city.
The point being that burners come from all sets of experience, and you are welcome regardless of your base or basis. Folk who come to this thing in the desert come from myriad places and have something to contribute. Bring what you've got.
not that I would turn down some toasted ravs. tomato sauce please.

Catman, for you I'd serve up a small order of grits as a side order made however you'd like; then add a couple strips of bacon, two eggs any style, and finally your choice of English muffin or toast. THAT's a solid nutritious breakfast to start the day, as long as you add a small glass of fruit juice and a cup of milk or coffee.Thecatman wrote:I like grits, plain, butter, gravy. Never had grits with maple syrup. Sounds good. I put syrup on oatmeal.^Rhino! wrote:And grits?
A taste best garnered as a youth. Good with maple syrup, butter, a pinch of salt, and cheese as possible additions. Shrimp grits, though?
I wouldn't be able to handle shrimp. Don't like fish, seafood etc.
**Rhino hits the bell in the cook's window as he serves up the breakfast**
Yo, waitress..order up for the VIP table..this one's for catman. You want me to fix him some of the signature hash browns that made me famous? OK....that's an order of hash browns scattered smothered covered capped peppered diced cubed and chipped.{Immediate translation for the uninformed: Hash browns will be scattered on the grill, smothered with onions covered with cheese, add mushroom caps, add diced bell pepper, add cubes of breakfast ham, and add chips of hickory smoked bacon}
I've done enough short-order cooking in my time to make my head swim, but it's always easy for me.

New order! Ravs with marinara! Get the best we've got from 'The Hill' [Italian district of St. Louis, known for its food, Yogi Berra (he grew up there) and Joe Garagiola]

So, you were one of the art museum folks....and lived in Soulard. Ever been up to Mad Art, the studio built in the old police station? Neat place. It's maybe 10 blocks from the Atomic Cowboy on Manchester, the punk rock bar that serves the fish tacos where Sumo Chris and I made the 'sumo hug' famous. They used to have the Gateway Meet and greets at the Atomic Cowboy. Now, they go to a bar not far off Vanderventer that's burner friendly.
Soulard, for those of you who don't know, is part of the old French District, about 2 blocks away from Anheuser-Busch's main campus and brewery. On the other side of Soulard is 14th St., where Ralston-Purina and Purina Mills has their world HQ. It's built on the old site of Gratiot Prison, notorious during the Civil War for the number of Confederates that never left.
Ahhhh....the stories to tell.......and for you, Shoeshine, I can tell you one piece of great news: Hodak's is still serving a packed house at lunch.

Re: hello from st. louis, missouri !!
Route still exists. No joke. It's actually the most stolen sign in MoDOT's inventory, right up there ahead of Route 69. Except now they call it "Historic Route 66" and put it under the new route designation. Example: Lebanon, Missouri was big on Route 66. Now, the town is still growing, but it's now known as Business Route I-44. In the state of Missouri, that route is VERY historic, going back even before Route 66 and known as the 'wire road', the service road and transportation route adjacent to the telegraph.Thecatman wrote:Sounds like something a body would get back in the day on old Rte66.^Rhino! wrote:Yo, waitress..order up for the VIP table for catman. That's not all that unusual for a good route to get reused and upgraded time and again. The Emigrant Trail in Nevada follows along the Humboldt River, and, today that same route more or less is used as I-80.
"Those who don't remember history are condemned to repeat it.'
But if we DO remember history, we might find some awfully good transportation routes out there.

US 50 through Nevada pretty much follows the Pony Express Trail. Right out my backdoor. I live a few blocks south of 50. There are signs a few miles west of us...closer into Dayton.

Do you pronounce Missouri as Mizuruh or Mizuree? (edit spelling) My friend in Moberly pronounces it Mizuruh. His folks and older brother live near Kirksville say Mizuruh as well. Just a curiosity question. I'm doing my darndest to say it the way they do.

I didn't find many in St. Louie that pronounced it with the "uh" think that is more of an out-state thing.
@^Rhino I lived on 13th just down the block from the police station. I left in '04 I think, so Mad Art had just opened its doors. I went to the opening reception though. Glad to hear that is alive and well.

One night, the Gateway Burners showed "Burningman-Voyage in Utopia", the great film produced by Laurent LeGall.....and Laurent was there. I love that film. Good memory.Shoeshine wrote:I didn't find many in St. Louie that pronounced it with the "uh" think that is more of an out-state thing.

The hardcore question, though: didja ever learn to pronounce it "highway fahrty" (highway 40 now known as I-64)? That's normally an instant clue to a southside St. Louian......
