Chicken John reveals his inner Hippie
I'm so excited I could shit. I won't, that wouldn't be right, but I must express myself. I will continue to do as I please. I will ask for what I want and keep in mind the wants of others. I will negotiate with the intention of making humanity better. I am invested in this project. I will bring art even If I'm not funded, it may not be as impressive but it wll be my contribution. And you'll fucking love it. I will follow the rules, which I believe to be fair, otherwise I will vote to change them, or I will break them conciously. I will be in power over my contribution. No one takes that from me. I belong to no church, man or org. But I am willing to work with my fellow human. lets do the fucking work! I'm not sure where I fit in but I will find a place. Maybe for now my contribution will be to inform people that something is happening. Hay everyone!!! People are asking for a voice. people want to ba a part of something big. People want controll over their lives and their futures. People might be able to save the fucking world. If it dosent start here then where does it start? Are you going to do it alone? I'm not! I want to love this, I want to see this grow. People come to the e-playa with negativity, but they go to the real playa with hope. Can't you feel it. The wonder and pain and love and hunger and dust. This is really important to me and if you think I'm "uneducated about the facts", or "impulsive and emotional" I will still hug you when I see you, because I know I'm doing my best to choose well. This isn't about what's hard to do it's about what's possible. What we should do. Where we could go as free thinking. impowered people. I don't want to deal with every detail but I do want a choice and I don't have to wait for an invitation to speek my mind. The org isn't my enemy, they're just people. As people I respect the work they do. I don't want to deal with getting a permit for 35,000+ people to do hazardous things in a hazardous place. The red tape and the liabilities. I chose not to participate in that way. But if I want to discuss issues concerning me as an artest ya'all just better listen. I believe the org, being made of people, will hear me. I'm not concerned, I'm excited! Ready to start building for next year. Oh mighty lord Chicken... do you really have so many adversarys? You must piss a lot of people off. I really respect that.
Love, Love, Love Natalie (the Bat)
Love, Love, Love Natalie (the Bat)
and fuck you too.
Ohhh... does Mr. Badger need a hug? You're not even arguing! I don't give a fuck what Chicken charges for "call" drinks. And on the topic, if anyone paid it, he won. Are you sore about that? Get over it. "Baby Badger needs his ba ba!" She said in her most girly, condecending, bitch voice.
With all due respect Badger, is there point to your thoughts or do you just come here to shit. Wait, I'm really tring to convince myself that you're aware of an entire civilization beyond your own little bitch fest. If we were in cyber space, wearing cool stuff, I'd be screaming at you. But since you are my brother Badger, I will live with you in peace... until I'm hungry. What do you know? What do Chicken and his "call" drinks have to do with a proposal that could breath enthusiasm into the coolest group of humans I've found. They come from around the world. (The world IS round Badger.) They invest their love, their art! Who's side are you on? I have yet to hear the voice of the org. I do not believe they oppose this until I hear them say it. In fact, I think they are listening. They are good people. They do the work I don't want to do, and they host an event I'm in love with. For them to do what they do, they must know how much I love it. I take their efforts personally. I am grateful for the welcome to speak. I promise to always speak, welcome or not. Oh Badger, I must thank you for insighting me. It feels so good to TAKE A FUCKING STAND. We sure don't do it on topics that matter, like saving the planet from distruction, etc.... "Sticking a feather up your ass does not make you a chicken." -(Fight Club). You have to work to be a Chicken. Chicken's willing to do the work. I respect that more than anything you know. Tell me why I'm wrong Badger, what do you know?
Love Natalie

The response.....
I'd like to address the extremely well thought out and enlightening response from Larry and the Org in regards to the petition.
I was one who thought the original proposal was in theory a great idea, if for no other reason than to alert the Org to the growing concerns of some of the artists. Those who wrote the proposal spoke for a small sum of people representing a larger sum of people who may or may not agree with their wishes or demands.
Like it or not the Org is a corporation and they must act as one. Granted it is probably the most unique corp. on the planet. We can all attest to this. This to me comes back to the simple gripe that the grass is always greener. It can always be better, so we should therefore continue to work together to achieve this. I commend the writers of the petition to have the balls, albeit not necessarily the brains to write this. For if it was not for them writing this, we would not have been privy to many of the reasons that the art was lacking and disappointing this year. I commend Larry for releasing this information to the public. I think he has addressed the majority of the concerns in reasonable, forthright and honest regards. I sincerely hope the threats of taking their art and running if these demands are not met are rethought as I believe they will be. If not, this is very indicative of a child saying "either we play this way, or I'm taking my cool toys and going home". It is a selfish way of thinking and to me the antithesis of what Burning Man art is about.
And lets not kid ourselves, Burning Man is about far more than art. It is about art, music, dance, acting, performances, poetry, survival, mother nature, organization, forgiveness, hope, unity, expression, spirituality, examples, teaching and learning, understanding, change, fire, friends, family, lovers, community and so many other things we could never put into words. Art plays only a small role in the grander scheme of things. No one thing about Burning Man is more important than another. Let's try not to forget that.

The Hated One
Isotopia, my beloved drag queen english teacher. I will take your advice. I will contribute my thoughts and try to make it easier for those who prefer pictures to words. As for my spelling, they are my words and I will fuck them up as I please.
Does anyone know why I have been named The Hated One? I want to be able to tell the story when I introduce myself that way.
To Dr. Fltersnatch who said, "Art plays only a small roll in the grander scheme of thngs." I'd like to offer the perspective that you may be full of shit (hay! That's the thid post where I've said shit).
Nothing personal. While I care, I want you to know, I think you missed the point. Anything that can be loved can be art. The art of sex. the art of cooking, the art of driving, the art of raising your children. I am only not an artist when I can't find the art. If I can't figure out why it should be loved. I do not care about the mechanics of a car. There is no art in it for me, no spark, no intrest to learn and build in the world of cars. BUT, you can't tell me that any mechanic who loves what they do, doesn't consider themself an artist. For their art I respect them. We have a loose frame work for what art is as a funding worthy thing. I consider the music, performance, survival, etc, at BM to be the work of artists. I don't expect the BMorg to fund everything. I consided thier work to secure a permit to camp for a week an investment in my survival and my art.
I think Burning Man understands what art is. I read Mr. Larry Harvey's responce to the proposal. My heart goes out to the BMorg. I see the difficulties in adopting this proposal. I personally am willing to negotiate. If you'd like to fund the %10.7 (or something) you suggested, instead of the %10 requested, I'm sure artists from around the country would be willing to bend.
No really, You guys have all my respect. The only thing I saw as a bunch of crap in your responce, Mr. Harvey, was how you compaired the implications of this proposal to an, "exact replica of the default world." If the world is "default" it is because her children have become sad and scilent. I will save the world when I understand the meaning of integrity. I will do as I please. If it wern't for this proposal I would not have the balls to ask. Now I want to know how to participate. This proposal lets me in. I want in! I want it and if you could know how bad, you'd give it up.
Some one must look at the details and you've done a great job, you seem qualified to rise to the challenge of adapting this proposal so we're all happy. Do it please. The big picture you've painted is beautiful, please stand back a look.
All my respect Mr, Harvey.
Love Natalie

There are some good ideas in the body of the petition like more money from the gate to go to art grants, grants for non theme art, and less focus on the BMOrg’ s definition of “interactive” when making decisions on what projects get funding.
As for the whole voting thing, never going to work and the burocrasy will end up draining money out of the art program.
I also found the whole idea of all artists that want to get funding have to go to San Francisco to be ridicules. I think this is the most telling part of the petition and the motivations behind it.
I thank everyone from San Francisco who helped get this thing off the ground but it is not a San Francisco thing, or a California thing, or USA thing, it is fucking Burning Man and it is bigger than any one city, state, or country.
This is one Burning Man artist that won’t be adding his name to the petition

Mr. Feltersnatch my dear friend,
If I knew it was you at the time I would have been more gentel about the way I told you were full of shit. I still mean it but in a nice way, as always.
To the guy who said voting will never work, I think you're really full of shit. But I support your right to be a Communist. I again would like express my thoughts.
If the people participate, the people are in charge. I have never met anyone more qualified to tell me what to do then me. I don't care if it's hard or makes me unpopular with my friends. I have enough conviction to believe that my voice matters.
Voting will never work. You got a better idea? How about you make all the decisions. Unless you consider my point of view, you will not have my loyality. I don't want to be the queen of all, I want to have a meaningful voice. I want to believe that what I want is valid. I want to vote on art. I want to help plan my experience. I want to see my artist friends contribute in a big way. Are you afraid of not getting votes? All I saw your statement to be was a cop out on details. If we want it, we will find a way. We have the technology to save the world and we don't use it. And it's everyone's fault.
Burning Man is the birthplace of impossibiliy. To not suport this proposal is to deny the possibility of the impossible. I signed the proposal. We should argue and then you can sign it too.
Love always, Natalie

Nice try
How does me being against the idea of having a public vote for arts funds make me a communist?
I am the guy who said voting will never work and what I mean by that is, The voting system outlined in the petition is not a practical solution for choosing who gets funding From Burning Man. Some one has to come up with a system for collecting and counting all the votes. Some one has to certify that the votes are legitimate and that every person, all 40,000 or 50,000 of them only get to vote once. All that will cost money and add even more bureaucracy. And where is that money going to come from? My guess is out of the art fund.
The petition starts out with this statement, “We are the artists. We feel that this event which we made great has gotten away from us and we would like it back.”
Correct me if I am wrong but this was drafted by a relatively small group of artists in a bar in San Francisco. If this group is really trying to speak for the “Artists of Burning Man” than they should have solicited input from the whole burning man community. Maybe I missed that email.
Oh and Natalie I did consider the point of view of the petition but I don’t agree with it 100% so I wont sign it and you think that makes me a communist? Stating my opinion?
You can be as insulting to me as you, like I still wont be signing the petition and I will be spreading that same feeling in my local burning man community.
P.S. No, Weather or not I would get votes is not my concern. My friends and I have never asked for funding for our projects. We pay for them ourselves. We have spent about $8000.00 over the last 5 years. It has always been our gift.

I signed on with the petition, even though I disagreed with just about everything in it -- simply because I thought it might stir up just the kind of discussion we're seeing here.
I also disagree with the current situation, seeing a basic inconsistency with promoting DIY self-expression, while funding and giving greater logistic support to mega-art which arguably makes others' efforts insignificant by comparison.
Some might be content to let their self-funded art stand side-by-side with whatever else is out there. Fine -- I can't argue with that. The org has every right to fund whatever it wants. Fine -- but from the perspective of someone who's worked DPW for years, the pre- and post-event favoritism given funded art wrt seems a bit unfair, esp. when picking up the crap they leave behind.

Personally, I thought that was reasonably well-framed, Bob. And I agree with you.Bob wrote:Damn the nonexistent edit button, too.
But then, I'd also be happy to see the org not bother with building the Man or center camp, either. I believe the community is more than creative enough to come up with interesting replacements and/or alternatives.
I also recognize that in the eyes of many, that last paragraph makes me a heretic.
Hawk.
Thank You for your gift. I meant no offence by calling you a communist. If I had said that at a party, I would have been instantly dissqualified for pulling a loose, sticky card like that one. You could have ripped me a new ass hole and you didn't. Thanks. I was speaking only to you implying that voting wouldn't work. It feels so hopeless to me when you say that. You seem so absorbed with the buracracy you believe the proposal would create. Your concern makes me believe you are the type of artist who takes much care to use all time and resources to their fullest. My respect to you.
I don't believe that the Burning Man community would tollerate wasting resources any more than you do. I want to vote so I can be involved. Again, thank you for your gift.
Bob,
Don't vote if you don't care. This is about building the energy of motivation and participation. The talk is good. But it's only talk.
All my love, Natalie

I don't really understand why people throw out 'communist' as some sort of insult. I've seen that on the eplaya a few times now. Communism in it's theory version isn't a bad thing at all and countries that are considered to be communist aren't really. This isn't the '50's, no need to believe all that government bullshit about how evil it is.
I would venture to say that Burning Man is a communist experiment.
How about using 'facist' or something like that, more appropriate and it makes more sense.

Oh my dear sweet Nat.
Do not appologize, it shows weakness and is unfitting of your intelect.
Stand strong to your convictions.
And I'll see you soon. We've got a suburb to burn. :-)

Geez, Dr. F, you sound like you're the one giving advice to Bush. There's nothing wrong with admitting you are wrong!

It's an inside joke. But thanks for playing.

Bob called me a Hippy and I can't figure out if it was an insult or a complement. I'll be expecting those roses.
Sparkletart, I believe Communism to be a bad thing. Communism like any of my ideas, looks good on paper. That's why my little idea notebook has a picture of Che on it (and he's really hot). What is the right way to govern a huge society? The answer is always education. We all know this. If Burning Man is in fact an experiment in Communism then I would expect to be exicuted soon. The people have a voice here.
A communist people do not have a voice. They work so hard and own nothing. They are watched constantly. FucK That. I'm a first generation American mutt and I say FUCK COMMUNISM.

I thought they looked pritty happy on the news when they were tearing down the Berlin Wall. Maybe they were happy because they had spent years living in isolation and repression and would finally not be shot on sight for coming near the wall. Or maybe they were happy because they were wild beasts that just wanted to tear something up and they would be better off living in a cage, controlled by their master, making their master rich, hoping their master will care for their children. Or is that just "government bullshit about how evil it is" that I've been led to believe. I think not. My grandfather escaped east Gremany right before the wall went up. His family suffered there until the wall came down. I am happy to live here in America. If the apathy continues, if people continue to not believe that voting is a birth right, we will end up controlled by a master. Is it going in that direction? Are we already there?
Burning Man pushes you to live without a master and to care for your fellow humans. If it's an experiment, then we are researching human potential. FUCK COMMUNISM!
Love Natalie

Yes well, the thing is, when people looking happy tearing down the Berlin Wall, it didn't have anything to do with Communism, because, contrary to what the US propaganda machine likes to tell you, those Eastern block and USSR countries were not really Communist. They led under that 'name' but they weren't there. It's kind of like in the 50's/60's when Saskatchewan brought in free medicare: American Atlas companies surrounded that province with a red border to indicate that it was a communist province. hahaha.
From wikipedia:
"As a social system, communism is a type of egalitarian society with no state, no private property and no social classes. In communism, all property is owned by the community as a whole, and all people enjoy equal social and economic status. Perhaps the best known principle of a communist society is "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need"."
huh, to me that sounds an awful lot like BRC, except the private property part of course, but even then, people are freely sharing what they have.
