Would (non rebar) candy canes survive on the playa?

Post by whimsicaltoast » Fri Aug 07, 2015 1:25 am

Will candy canes melt into goey messes out there, or will they still be Christmassy, bright sticks of peppermint wonder?

I tried searching eplaya for the answer to this, and while I happily found that there are some real Christmas fans out there, I'm left in the dark about this issue.

Background info:

1. I want to pass them out while we carol through the playa
2. They are the little individually wrapped candy canes in a tiny plastic bag
3. Though I do fear MOOP from the plastic, individually wrapped = no trouble from the health department re: permits + they can save it for later.
4. I plan to have a small candy cane MOOP receptacle while we circle around

Anyone with experience doing something similar which included handing out individually wrapped candy or whatever?

Thanks!!

Do they melt when you stick them in the microwave?

Candy canes should be fine on the playa. People have given out chocolate bars and kept then in a cooler to keep them from melting. Candy canes are more along the lines of a lollipop. A moop bag for the wrappers is a great idea.

Hard candy such as candy canes melt at temperatures around 300 degrees so they should be fine.

Humidity tends to make them sticky. Not gonna get a lot of that out there.

I hand out hard candy in center camp before the shows at night and when visiting peoples camps. The candy will be fine. Burners REALLY appreciate it when you offer to take the wrapper. Wear a moop bag and 90% of the wrappers will be in it. When someone says no thanks just smile and let em go. It's not always safe to take candy from strangers. Get someone to take some pictures of you doing it. You'll enjoy them later.

Love the idea of caroling!
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

Whoa, y'all are AWESOME. Thanks for all of the info and the tips! It really *does* feel like Burning Man for the other 51 weeks here. I'm feelin' the love.

Ratty--thanks for sharing your experiences with candy hand outs, too. Super helpful hints. Would not have thought about documenting!

Oh hey, BoyScoutGirl! You're here too! You (and any other lurking Christmas lovers out there) are welcome to join us--we'll be leaving from Time Colony (2:15 & A) at 6pm on Tuesday! :D
