Sleeping pills at your age? I know there are much better ways. New Job perhaps, new locale, new something. Why is there so much angst in Seattle at this time? Agnst free zones abound.

The Northwest as a whole deals with large bouts of depression during this time of the year. I remember growing up in AZ I never really felt like I do living up here. And also the Northwest is right in the ring of fire and there many properties good and bad to be gained from that.

Scientists have stated that a common cause for insomnia in people over the age of 35 or 40 is deficiency of the hormone melatonin (Garfinkel et al. 1997; Haimov et al. 1997). Melatonin is used by the body to induce drowsiness and enables one to enter the deep-sleep patterns characteristic of youth.

After darkness, young pineal glands secrete melatonin slowly for about 5 hours to enable the body to enter the various stages of deep sleep, so people can feel revitalized and rejuvenated the next morning. Further, melatonin supplementation has been shown in many scientific studies to be a safe and effective sleep-enhancing therapy (Brown 1994; Garfinkel et al. 1995; Haimov et al. 1995; Zhdanova et al. 1995; Zisapel 1999).

How to Properly Use Melatonin
Based on studies indicating a significant disease prevention potential, melatonin has become a popular dietary supplement in the United States. There is a debate, however, as to what the optimal nightly dose of melatonin should be.

One study tested 10 mg of melatonin for 28 consecutive nights in human volunteers. At this relatively high dose, there was no evidence of toxicity and those receiving melatonin (10 mg) had a better sleep score compared to the placebo group (de Lourdes et al. 2001).

There are experts who advocate that lower doses of melatonin are better than higher doses. These scientists point to another study on elderly human subjects where only 300 mcg of melatonin induced better sleep than 3000 mcg (3 mg) over a 7-day period (Wurtman 2000).

A review of all the published literature reveals that a wide range of melatonin doses has been used to produce better sleep patterns in human subjects (Garfinkel et al. 1995; 1997; 1999; Zhdanova et al. 1995; 1999; Jan et al. 1996; 1997; Dagan et al. 1997; Hughes et al. 1997; Kunz et al. 1997; 1999; Lushington et al. 1997; Middleton et al. 1997; Nakamura et al. 1997; Avery et al. 1998; Dawson et al. 1998; Jean-Louis et al. 1998; Jorgensen et al. 1998; Kato et al. 1998; Okawa et al. 1998; Pillar et al. 1998; Rosenberg et al. 1998; Shochat et al. 1998; Suhner et al. 1998; Brusco et al. 1999; Fauteck et al. 1999; Matsumoto 1999; Miyamoto et al. 1999; Dalton et al. 2000; Domzal et al. 2000; Gordon 2000; Sack et al. 2000).

I also find that light polution can disturb sleep. Use your mad playa skillz and try sleeping with an eye mask and perhaps even earplugs. Also, try sleeping without your partner/SO/BF/whatever. It is often easier to get a good nights sleep without someone else in close proximity.

once i'm off the budget melatonin may be in the future.
hopefully, though, this won't last that long.
most bouts these days are only a week or so, not like the 5 months it started with.

and then there is quitting coffee. The stuff you drink would keep me up for a coon's age.

but hey, don't listen to me. I am sure the boys at big pharma would be glad to know they've got yet another potential sedative addict on the way.

RJ, if you are having trouble sleeping, 'at night' isn't the only time you shouldn't be having coffee. Sounds like it's time to cut back.

And really, go get some melatonin or 5htp. Just get a wee bottle, it's not that much.

Maybe someone else has said this already, I only skimmed through the postings ... if you can't sleep, it's because you aren't done yet. You need more. Or, to put it another way, maybe you haven't gotten enough. Or, to put it another way, maybe you aren't getting enough. Or maybe I am just a fucktard ... but hey, it works for me.

Hey Geeky!

Hell yeah, our ski hill just opened today for the first day and we had 17cm fresh which was such a treat. More snow, snow, snow in the forecast for all week and then my favourite chair ever opens next weekend. I love winter! Woo hoo!

Rian: Another vote for melatonin. Been using it for years, it works like a charm. If you have a Costco membership you can get a year's supply for approx. $8.50. Down it with a cup of heated milk for the tryptophan.

Another thing I do: have a bedtime routine. Write it down and follow it for a month, after that it'll be habit. Start it an hour before lights-out and slowly wind down. Eventually your body will recognize the pattern and behave accordingly.

They're saying white noise generators, played softly, help too.

Thanks for the tips on melatonin, gang. I've been having trouble sleeping for the longest time. Went to the doctor last week, hoping she'd give me Ambien or some sleep aid to knock me out, but she suggested benydryl. That crap don't won't worth a damn.

Yogi Bedtime Tea helps. A wee tot of rum added is also good.

10 minutes of slow, deep complete breathing helps.

I switched to tea in the morning instead of coffee. The body changes throughout life and what didn't keep you jangly in your teens could have a different effect in your late 20s or 30s or ...

Yoga practice, helps a lot.

Ambien is great if you have to get to sleep at a time certain, but the rest is not restorative, plus it's expensive.

I wanted to post this yesterday, but drama ensued.

Did i tell you about my parking ticket a few weeks ago? Well, i chose to adjudicate it by mail. The other day i got word - i don't have to pay! For once the parking gods love me! I think it's cause i thanked the meter maid instead of asking if she eats her young.

So freakin fabulous - like i had the cash to pay for a parking ticket (and outside my own house too)

HELL YEAH!!

"Pussy," was soon back to normal...

Post by Simply Joel » Thu Dec 09, 2004 9:52 am

"Pussy" was soon back to normal after a few minutes of petting.

Hell Yeah!
Kitten Survives 275-Mile Ride Next to Car Engine

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German couple was shocked after a 275-mile car journey to discover a surprise stowaway cowering next to the engine of their car -- a 6-week-old kitten.

The meows of the tiny animal only became audible after Elisabeth and Dieter Gesehl had parked their car.

"First of all we called the police as we feared for a moment that we must have run over and seriously injured a cat," the 64-year-old woman from Eggenfelden told Bonn express newspaper.

After checking under the hood, however, they discovered the unharmed kitten. The animal, which the couple have since adopted and named "Pussy," was soon back to normal after a few minutes of petting.
