What are you going to do differently this year? And did you try anything new last year that you're going to do again?

I'm going to add a second layer of aluminet over part of my monkey hut, because 70% shade isn't enough shade... for me at least.

I'm going to keep using big plastic cereal keepers to pour ice into in my cooler. They are much easier to handle than big ziploc bags, and pour that lovely clean cold water much less messily into our camelbacks and water bottles.

I'm going to try not working so much on the camp and get out and see Burning Man. I burned myself out the last couple years by working too hard.

I'm pretty shy, and have a tendency to say no when presented with something out of my comfort zone. This year I'm going without the husband (aka my safety crutch). Last time I did that, I said No too many times and spent too many evenings alone and not having any fun. This year I'm going to have a Yes day. I will commit to saying yes to whatever comes my way, with some clear exceptions - no illegal activities, nothing I'm allergic to, nothing that will impact my chronic health condition etc.

I'm terrified.

Personal camp: After major upgrades last year, I'm simplifying what I/we bring out this year. I have all the infrastructure I need and I'll spend a lot less time explaining to my wife what she should consider leaving home. She gets it now. So, less stuff!

Theme camp: We have our Philly based sister-camp coming out and they are bringing their stoops and ice cream truck DJ booth. The idea is to bring the hood to the burn! We just KILLED it at Love Burn so everyone is stoked about TTID. We are also doing some more scheduled arts tours with the art car.

Volunteer: Going to add a Temple Guardian shift this year.

This time, I'm going to simplify our living space... at least in terms of effort on-playa.

Much as I love playa living in a 16' traditional yurt, I don't love the fact I can't put it up by myself. I don't love that I've never been able to have it ready for my first night on the playa, or that I have to break it down early and sleep in my car on the last night. I especially don't love the extra work it adds on top of helping build/strike our theme camp.

So this year, the yurt stays at home, and the 10' cargo trailer will be our bedroom. My goal is to organize it so that even fully packed, the bed is available - meaning that come the end of the event, we can load our stuff, de-moop our site, still have our usual bed to sleep in, and roll out the moment we wake up the next morning.

Hey hey... it's my 8th too And I'm also bringing an A Class RV (but that's who I rented from, not the actual RV)

Geez, that's just mean. 17 years in a tent. No fleas yet.

I am NOT going to lead camp this year. I have turned over the reins to the next generation. That means I will not be the one unpacking the trailer, washing the kitchen supplies, buying propane and generator gas and garbage bags and zip ties and rope. I will not be the one buying new carports and designing the camp layout. I will not be MOOP master overseeing breakdown day, or construction master overseeing setup day. I will, after six years of hard but rewarding work, just show up and let someone else shoulder the responsibility. I might even leave early and avoid breakdown entirely. God it sounds nice. For the first time since 2012, I am just going to Burning Man. I am just Radically Self-reliant. I am not personally responsible for acclimating the virgins or banning sequins or overseeing the details other than my own.

Man, that’s the thing so many people don’t get. You don’t have to be in a “camp”.
One of the best times I had was ‘07... I don’t know how many of you remember ePlayan “Sensei” (he passed away several years ago) but we both pulled up on the outside of the outer ring road right against the trash fence at around 4:15, parked, and we were done.
No “camp”. No tear down. No set up. No nothing but whatever we wanted to do.
Bringing your motorhome (or in my case a big camper on your truck) beats the hell out of setting up a camp. Park, open beer, start “burning”.
