Is it just me, or was sunburn pretty much a non-issue? I'm Irish American with fair skin, and diligent sunscreen application is a way of life. But I found that the dust actually helped as a second skin of sorts. I still used sunscreen, of course, but when I came home and finally had a proper shower, I might have been paler than when I left New York.

I wear a Keffiyeh, but usually in the Lebanese style (think Yassir Arafat). But as soon as a dust storm hits, I tie it up military fashion.
I also pour a little water on it, and it works as an evaporative cooler too.

+++ Ice cubes in the hat worked great last time. Almost too good at times.TexasRick wrote:When I used to work in a steel mill (think running rivers of molten iron) we used to make a bundle of ice cubes in a red rag and put it up in the crown of our hard hats. The ice would keep your dome cool, and the little rivulets of chilled water down the back of the neck were refreshing. On the other hand, I imagine the ice would last less than an hour on the Playa, requiring frequent restocking. I am considering a sombrero (with an anti blow away cord) to supplement my bush hat-but not the straw kind-it won't hold up.

Hydrate in copious amounts before, during, and after your trek. Your sweat will evaporate very quickly, you may not notice it. A wet bandana or cloth will keep your neck cool. A shady hat with a tall crown will protect your brain. Carry emergency first aid cold packs, alcohol swabs, or other evap coolers. Gulp your water, if you can't sip get a grip on that bottle. You will get hot, deal with it.

Hot? I live in Tucson, and go to Burning Man to cool off.
A big hat is enough to keep you from roasting. That and lots of water. Take advantage of others' shade structures whenever possible.

I use this, fill with water and add a few drops of tea tree oil (optional but is good for sun exposure and is also antimicrobial).

Pro tip: look for a model where the rod going down into the jug is metal and not plastic. I bought a plastic one and it broke mid week, while my metal version has lasted since 2006. This is great because it's small enough to carry around (especially in a bike basket) and you can spray lots of people easily. (be sure to ask permission and also tell people what oils you may have added so they can opt out if allergies.)
...you could also theoretically also adjust the nozzle setting and zap any unwanted weekend tourist type photographers, say at critical tits.
I also have a nice cotton sarong type thing that I will dip in ice cold cooler water and plaster it to my upper body for a portable personal swamp cooler. People are going to want to borrow it from you.
Both of these options will make any sunscreen melt away faster.

These seem awkward to keep with and have to set up. Will a wide-brimmed hat be enough or should I carry some other portable shade structure with me?
I use this special fabric cloth that cools instantly no matter what temp of water you dip it in. You can order some now at coolaid.com
I reccomend the human size cause you can't drape/wrap/tuck and get creative with it. They stay cool for long hours and the breeze cools them as well.
They also have assorted sizes that are for canines but it's all the same stuff just has a paw on it.
Good luck!

My method is to cover up:
Tights,
long sleeved thin hoodie,
abuse-tolerant broad hat,
keffiyeh (wet or dry),
ski goggles over glasses,
respirator.
Riding a bike creates a breeze, so ride and don't stop. Walking is uncomfortably hot.

Silk sarong dipped in water and draped over shoulders/chest.
Make that a DYED silk sarong

Oh and I usually always carry a parasol/umbrella with me out and about during the day

Re: What do you use to keep cool when AWAY from camp?
I don a long sleeve pull-over micro fiber shirt whose primary use is as under garment for snow skiing. Wicks moisture away from my skin. The shirt also has UV blockers built into it.
Over that I wear a cotton t-shirt, which helps contain the moisture.
Also wore a hat with a UV blocking skull cap under it.
Did not worry about my legs so much. Just wore shorts.
As long as there was a little breeze, I stayed nice cool in 2016. Never felt hot at all.
Not flashy though. Not at all.

As the camp evolves.....
We got this! 2016/2019
We had it! 2020
We almost lost it! 2021
We have no idea where it is! 2022
Who the hell are we and why are we here? 2023

Re: What do you use to keep cool when AWAY from camp?
This year I'm going all out on expression through costumes, so I'm fully expecting to suffer. I normally carry a water spritzer to cool down with.
I have a fair complexion so I usually wear a light long sleeve shirt during the day with a wide brimmed hat, and tons of sun screen on anything exposed. Although the dust tends to act as a bit of a sunscreen by itself. The heat really gets to me, so I just go slow and take breaks. I use it as an excuse to seek out a place to sit in the shade, and hopefully meet people too. I always offer a friendly mist to fellow burners

Whenever I run into some poor fool passed out on the Playa from heat exhaustion, I do the honorable life saving manouver all Playa denizens should know;
Just unload and piss on them, get in good and tight on the ears and neck, then a good dollop on the face ...
Saves a life!
Surprising how much energy the FKOs have when they chase you for what I can only assume is gratitude...

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.
.
Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.
.
, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

Pro tip 2:
If you must pass out and I’m around; do it in the afternoon.
You don’t want that early morning syrupy strong stuff ... may sting a bit.

Actually, Dicky-in-the-Box found that the water warmed up quite nicely (or not) in the Box. And was very chilly in the night times.
