Way up high in the Sierra peaks where the yellow pines grow tall
Old Sandy Bob and Buster Jiggs had a roundup camp last fall
They took their horses and brandin' irons and may be a dog or two
And they swore they'd brand every slick eared calve that came within their view
And any old dog that flapped long ears and didn't brush up by day
Got his long ears whittled and his old hid sizzled in a most artistic way
Now one fine day old Sandy Bob he throwed his cigo go down
Well I'm tired of cow geography and now I'm a goin' to town

So they saddles up and they hits 'em a lope for it weren't no sign of a ride
And them was the days when a buckaroo could oil up his insides
Oh they starts her off at Kentucky Bar at the head of a whiskey row
And they winds up down at the depot house some forty drinks below
And then sets up and turns around and goes her the other way
And to tell you the god forsaken truth them boys got stewed that day
They were headed for home and goin at a lope and feelin a pretty good load.
When who should they see but the devil himself come a prancin' down the road

The Devil he says you cowboy skunks you better hunt your holes
For I've come up from hells Rim Rock to gather in your souls Bob he says to the devil himself we boys are a feelin pretty tight
And before you'll have any cowboy souls you'll have one hell of a fight
So he pokes a hole in his ol lasso and throws it straight and true
And ropes the devil around the horns and he takes in his dallies too
Now Buster Jiggs was a reita man with his gut line coiled up neat
So he shakes her out and he built him a loop and he lassoed up the devil's hind feet

Well they stretched him out and they tied him down while the brandin irons was got' hot
And they cropped and swallow forked both his ears and they branded him up a lot
They pruned him up whit a dehorning saw and they knotted his tail for a joke
And they rode away and left him there tied up to a big black oak
So if your ever up in the Sierra peaks and you hear an offal wail
You'll know it's the devil a hollerin' about the knots tied in his tail

It's actually a very old song that my father would sing around the camp fire on fishing trips.

Sung to the tune "Polly Wolly Doodle".

I think I first heard it in the very early 60s, but it's much older than that. :)

Hi BVB. Long time there buddy. This eclipse reminds me of August 28th 2007 at 3AM. This brightest moon that turned to a full lunar eclipse. It was Tuesday, so the crowds were light, and the early burn is something I will never forget actually witnessing. Can I get you another drink?

Hey Sham!

...Well sure, I'll have another shot of Kentucky bourbon please...

Yes, it has been a long time! I'm looking forward to hopefully catching up with you on playa again if the stars line up. Time will tell! Who knows, we may be hearing some kind of ticket news before too long.

Regarding 2007, I do seem to recall you mentioning in the past that you witnessed the two burns that year. Must have been a memorable WTFTuesday night for sure!

Doing pretty well here, staying busy, and also finding time to make art. Like so many of us, I'm definitely missing the playa too.

HI Sham! Hi BVB!\
yeah, 07 was quite the year! two burns, lunar eclipse, and "Crude Awakenings". that explosion and fire changed parameters for crowd distancing from then on! I was near the front, and a head higher than those in front of me....my face felt like it was on fire when that lit off! people were screaming and diving for the ground and running....... and considering one of the propane/jet fuel nozzles misfired...

Hi ya yg!
Yep, I would have liked to have experienced Crude Awakening. A little before my time unfortunately. I imagine being up close when it went off was a moment of giddy excitement coupled with alarm that the people who set up the perimeter may have skipped a decimal place! Certainly something you don't forget anytime soon!

This video seems to show the nozzle misfire that you referred to...

Hey BVB!!
nice vid, thanks. sure brought back some memories!
It was probably more comfortable from back where the vid was shot. That front couple of rows, at least where I was, was almost mayhem! The radiant heat flat ass hurt! Some of the more tender skinned/less dressed people were howling in pain. Luckily, didn't last long enough to seemingly to much damage.

Hi ygmir

Been living in the bourbon state these past 5 years. Got a little spot, about 5 1/2 acres with a mobile home on it. Ain't much I guess, but it's paid for. Have a little polebarn on the property that I am making into a woodshop. I finally won the war with the wasps and hornets (I think) so now I can finally move into it without fear of being attacked every time I turn on a saw or hammer something.

How are you doing?

Pandemic Round II Cocktail

In a pint glass/beer glass:

2 shots of vodka

1 heaping tablespoon (at least) of frozen 100% juice concentrate (Grape juice, Lemonade, Limeade, Passionfruit)

Several squirts of real lemon or lime juice

Half a can or more of cold seltzer (Peach/Pear, Blackberry, or Passionfruit; others may work)

ICE.

Stir furiously.

Adjust as needed.

interesting cocktail, and name, Savannah. I may try that one!

Though, I did recently discover "Brockmans Gin".......what a delight. I just sip it straight. It does not taste like your normal "gin", hints of fruit and berry...

y'know, "it's paid for", is a huge thing. You can add and change as the opportunities arise, but it's yours. Well, yours and the tax persons....Funny, how we "own" land, but if we don't pay tribute, the government will take it away...
Yay for winning the "flybuzzybiteystingouch" wars...gotta keep at them! Do you make traps?
I have found an interesting thing about them: When I weld, if they are around the area, they will fly right into the arc! I've seen the movement and when I looked there were dead/burned hornets there. Sometimes one, sometimes several.

Eenteresting. Would try!

I am not even a gin person, but in perhaps the 2011(?) Burn . . . My friend West turned me on to Hendricks Gin. Ice cold, mixed with a little bit of ginger ale. It tasted like . . . roses. And not in a weird or bad way. A beautiful afternoon. :)
