Is a cheap laptop the trick? Digital DJ software
If the sand really does destroy electronic equipment w/moving parts, then maybe an old laptop, DJ software, external HD & soundcard are the way to go. Space saving also!

Well, first of all, it atint sand. It's farging TALCOM POWDER. That is what fraks up moving parts.DJ Mic Rage wrote:If the sand really does destroy electronic equipment w/moving parts, then maybe an old laptop, DJ software, external HD & soundcard are the way to go. Space saving also!
If you're going to do the laptop route, heat will be your biggest problem.
Even in older laptops.

this is a topic I'm interested in also. Rodent brought up some good points.
I guess if you have enough money you can get one of these

I'm looking to see any other less expensive solutions posted here also.

Ionizer!
A small computer inside a sealed box with a wireless optical mouse and a 'rollup' keyboard. A flat panel monitor. The box gets its ventelation via an ionizer so that it filters the air and causes particles to fall out of the air. I have a couple of bionaire units that would be perfect.
A water cooled unit would also be a good idea.

Not a good idea.... can you say water and electronics in the same breath? I think not..... Plus the moisture factor will make the metal stuff rust and short out you're boards...

One if by land...
I was under the impression that he was referring to a swap cooler type of apperatuss. I thought those cooling units for chips were freon/nitrogen based?

Positive Air flow within case! You gotta see this!

I like that with this...

I would reduce the number of exhaust ports and replace some with simple filters. If the fan is blowing in hard enough this would work. This in combination with this...

should be ideal!

It is a great prograzm but it does require a fairly fast system to operate in a usable manner. All sliders and knobs can be controlled via midi as well allowing for a much more hands on feel. I will write more later when I get home.DVD Burner wrote:has anyone tried TRAKTOR DJ Studio 2?

Thanks. I just got it and I have a few issues but like you say, Ram was the main one.Sandwichman wrote:

Re: forget traktor
I've tried alot of them but Traktor stands out in my mind. The features and MIDI capability make it wonderful. The audio quality is good and does not break up at loud volumes. I love the ability to auto-gain tracks so the relative MP3 volume is not a huge issue. The filters are nice and very simple as well sampler.DJ Mic Rage wrote:The BEST program that is Virtual DJ 2 by Atomix and I've tried them all!

What's his take on it's MIDI functions.
MIDI is important for me.
In the mean time I think I'm gonna try them out. ( there seems to be a few versions.) Let you know what I come up with.
Thanks guys.

Can anyone recommend a free virtual DJ program. I'm looking for something barebones. We're planning to have 2 separate computers playing mp3s hooked into a simple 2-4 channel mixer. We just need something that can let us preview songs, fast forward through intro's, set cue points, and change tempo (i think that's what it's called, changing the speed of the song without distortiing the sound or pitch). We're not a techno camp (no jungle, breakbeat, trance, ect.) so aren't doing any spiffy mixing tricks, we just want to have smoother segues between songs than WinAmp would give us.
The program needs to be simple, intuitive, stable under Windows, not a 'resource hog' (meaning it doesn't need the fastest processer and tonns of memory) and be either free or under $20.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendation but it's not free. It's $34.96DVD Burner wrote:Sorry. that was me.
MJ studio is pretty neet for free.

If it wasn't $35, it looks like the right idea.

is there a general favorite computer program thread I could recommend good/great/free programs? couldn't find it, and I wanted to recommend this cool program I FINALLY found (been searching for something that would split mp3s off and on for weeks) that is;
a) FREE
b) Splits long audio files into parts automatically, either using silence detection or you can select track length- great for making recorded lectures more easily navigable on your ipod, iriver, etc.
and does lots of other stuff, normalizes, etc.
it's mp3directcut,

Soon as I can afford it, I'll be throwing the guy some euros.
