Confessions.
I confess that while attempting to capture a large house centipede for
nefarious purposes (matching it in a death battle against a large spider) i
have now killed two innocent centipedes. Turns out that their legs are
super fragile and break off with only slight pressure. I need to find a
new way to capture them -- the plastic cup method does not seem to be
working.

And they die because of that? Huh. Lots of insects drop appendages as a
defense mechanism so they can't be caught by them. Ask me about
kneecapping crickets sometime. Usually makes them slower, but
doesn't kill them and gives them a chance to breed. Of course, I don't
know if it would be a fair fight against the spider with the missing limbs.
> I need to find a new way to capture them
Without picking them up in your hand, I assume? I would think that a
piece of stiff paper and a cup or jar would work. Use the paper to herd
the centipede into the container. But you've probably tried that already.
Might also try a plastic spoon as a herding tool.

Nah, they die 'cuz after they lose their legs they look sad and unable to
take care of themselves. So i squish them.

Exactly.

They stay still sometimes, but once they move they are super super fast.
The cup and paper method is the one i've been using, but i can't herd the
centipedes 'cuz as soon as they see movement from me they are off and
running. And when i see them run towards me i get into borderline
screaming-chick-standing-on-a-chair mode, 'cuz, well, something that
ugly speeding towards me like that freaks me out on some kind of
instinctual leve.
I keep trying to just sneak up and drop the cup on top of them but each
time i either end up chopping their legs off or missing them all together.
Next step is to try a large plastic bowl or something instead of the cup.
Or i may try vacumming one up with my dust buster and see if it survives.

There is something in the Mojave desert called a Sun Spider. It is translucent so that you can see their innards. They have huge claw/fang looking things. They are aggresive as hell, and though not poisonous, have a pretty wicked bite. Creeped the living shit out of my as a kid when I first moved to the Mojave.Juju wrote:I completely understand the "screaming chick on chair" mode.
house centipedes are the ugliest scariest bugs I've ever encountered. I killed many last summer.
howsabout a clear plastic shoebox?

God damn. That thing still gives me the willies.

you know you're a burnerd when someone on e-playa makes a suggestion and you just happen to have the very item they were talking about, stuffed in the back of the closet.girlie wrote:> hows about a clear plastic shoebox?
brilliant idea. i have some clear boxes too, and they are big enough that
i'm much less likely to hit the legs during the capture. thanks for the
suggestion.
oops. sorry. i thought this was the "you know you're a bernerd when..." thread.
i confess that while the hydrocodone is great for back pain, it does fuck all for my add, dyslexia and my editorial skills.
watch out for falling thread drift!!!!!!!!!

I understand it, though I don't think that mode works in me. I had to catch
a grasshopper that was freaking Caution out the other day, and she's not
particularly squeamish most of the time either.

Sun spiders are also called wind scorpions because they run extremely fast. They are found mostly in hot, dry areas in India, the Caribbean, western USA and northern Mexico, though six of the 800 species can be found in Europe. They resemble large spiders, but have enormous jaws which can project upwards, and they use only their last three pairs of legs for running, the front pair being sensory. They feed on insects, birds and lizards to small mammals and even scorpions- captured by the pedipalps and torn apart by the jaws.girlie wrote:>> There is something in the Mojave desert called a Sun Spider.
Holy Fucking Shit -- how large are those things?
The info I found on the size says 1-2 inches, but that must be local or Egyptian variaties as I have captured ones that were close to 4 inches where I used to live.

I confess that in my sleep deprived state lately I might be saying more than I should. I confess that I don't care now but I might after a nap.

I confess that the phrase "mucus glasses" is kinda freakin me out too.

my dad feels the same way. he does, however, extoll the virtues of underwear when horseback riding. it's a painful story even for me to hear and i'm a chick.Flux wrote:I detest underwear, and have only worn it under duress for the last 28 years.
