I'll take some of that carrot juice today Heli. I am still out for the count but at least my new laptop gets here today. I have been running on a Pentium 1 and 133 for eons and finally I will be a little closer to up to date. Well I am out for a little bit. I am going to head back to watching childrens shows with my son.

True... In enough of an explanation to convince themselves of the rationality of the situation. As humans, we have a need to control things, have them within our realm of comprehension and thus own them in a sense, or at least have dominion over them. But I've been places where there was a felling... a GUT feeling, that could certainly be "explained away" to the mind... but to my gut, it was deeper. My gut and my mind are two separate things to the understanding of my own being.

I’m very intrigued by such things as haints, buggers, and “other-worldly” stuff, and lately, synchronicity... in a big kinda way.
Perhaps we just need a good story. I think our minds are very form by a need for narrative.

That's very commendable but churches do expect money--collection plates, tithes, tax breaks, paying for candles burnt, maybe they don't charge everyone, but there's no way the vatican got as rich as it it (or those televangelists either) without getting people to give money.

Hiddenfish: the Church Of JESUS CHRISTof Latter-Day Saints (Original emphasis) (LDS, AKA Mormon Church) is slightly richer than Nike. And they don't have to pay any taxes, despite the fact that they trow millions into political battles (like gay marriage issues...even in other states, like a few years ago when HI was debating it), which should make them a PAC.

At least 10%. That's for tithing. Plus there's the once-monthly "Fast Offering," for which they send the Deacons (13-yr old boys) to every house in the ward with an envelope on the first sunday of the month. You're supposed to fast from Sat night-sunday afternoon, then give the church the amount of money you saved by not eating during that time...or more, if you can afford it.

So the choice is to fast and say I only wouldve eaten rice and beans or not fast and give them nothing because you saved no money.

Of course you have the years worth of food in the basement--if you're in financial ruin and are eating it up then you don't have to give any money either.

for someone who didn't grow up in a church, I really want to cheat them, huh.

There's a lot of pressure, though, when that kid hands you the little blue envelope. Must admit I've performed that duty myself. They track who contributes, and the kid will know if you don't, as will the bishop. Since the receipt is in carbon triplicate in there, you can tell without opening it (it's Velcro anyway..reusable..and has your name and address written on the front of it, so they know who it came from) whether you put something in there and took the receipt. It's a pretty ickily manipulative system. But I guess you stick with what you're good at...

I'm sure it's an icky manipulative system.

I myself often find myself torn between what hte old communities did for the inhabitants and gratitude that I don't live my life in fear of gossip. A delicate line.

'Ghost train' causing delays on BART

Chronicle staff report Wednesday, February 16, 2005

BART is experiencing a computer glitch and other technical difficulties this morning at a number of stations, causing lengthy delays throughout the Bay Area that have stymied the morning commute.

A computer at the Embarcadero station saw a "ghost train" at 7:30 a.m., requiring operators to drive their trains manually at no more than 25 mph, rather than the normal 70 mph, said Jim Allison, a spokesman for the transit agency.

That created a backup in the Transbay Tube that saw as many as eight trains inside the tunnel at one time. That slowed the entire system to a crawl, and by 11 a.m. trains headed to the East Bay from San Francisco were still being delayed by 15 minutes.

The delays were exacerbated by a problem with the switching system that controls the routing of BART trains along the Peninsula, causing delays up to 20 minutes. Trains heading from Fremont to Daly City are being turned back at the 24th and Mission station to alleviate some of the traffic.

BART officials could not say when the problem would be corrected.
Isn't there a song about this. Or am I just combining "ghost riders" and "did he ever return?" again?
