Burning Man pod on Current TV

Post by Justin Gunn » Thu Dec 01, 2005 3:20 pm

Hi all,

As a long time Burning Man participant as well as a producer for Current TV (Al Gore's new cable network) it was my privilege to be allowed official access to cover the event this year for the network. The first of three pods, titled "Welcome to Burning Man" is presently airing on Current.

I would like to thank everyone who was willing to participate in the production. My aim was to stay true to the ethos of Burning Man while giving our audience a sense of what it's all about. Special thanks to Action Girl and Flack Master of Media Mecca as well as Lady Bee. Although I was on the playa alone this year and working hard the entire time, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had.

My hope is that this pod meets the aproval of all of the citizens of Black Rock City. I'd love to hear your comments.

You can view it online here:

Pretty cool there Justin. My only minor criticism is you inserting the idea that The Man represents something.

It represents nothing other than whatever meaning individuals assign it.

Still, I'll give it a 9.

Thanks for sharing it here.

I have to say that a 9, by my standards, is a great success. Thank you.

I liked it too, even though it was pretty much the same-ol' same-ol'. What I didn't quite get was the reference to all of the sex and drugs. Sex? Drugs? That's news to me.

The idea was to bring the broad strokes of the experience to a wider audience that may have heard of BM but has the wrong idea or even those who have never heard of it. I've heard stories from people who have watched it with their parents, grandparents, etc. whove really enjoyed it and had no idea that something like this goes on. Covering the sam 'ol same 'ol was idea with this one.

There are two more pods in post production, howeever, that delve a little deeper into other aspects. In Art of Burning Man, we'll take a ride along with Lady Bee as she tours some of the major installations on the playa. There will also be a pod about mutated vehicles. I'll keep you all posted on the air dates for these as well and if they'll be viewable online.

Best,
Justin

Thanks I liked it too.
When I to talk about BM to people most say
YA I hear there are necked girls there.
I just stop talking about it when I get that response.
They just don’t get it!
And this is from someone (me) that has never been there.

Thanks again

Very well done. It was great getting the virginal perspective. Aah memories (yes, I remember my first). The footage and statements were great. Keep up the good work.

Its Dustin... the Virgin from the Pod, i recently logged in looking for my missing bag and thankfully came across your posting! I was extremely happy to see the Documentary... Great images, editing and reflections on the event. I admitt i was a bit unsure of how i was going to be portrayed to the national public and accepted by past burners, but i rest assured as i have watched and shown the Pod... plus the positive reactions of past burners leaves my soul completely settled. I want to thank you for the opportunity to be part of the documentation of an event that has changed my life for ever.

But isnt this network designed for teens? I would tend to think that most teen to 30-somethings already know about Burning Man.

Maybe it was a way for Al Gore to stay up to date on what the youngsters are up to? I mean, he invented the internets and all...
