Both of these will require significant guy lines to keep them up. The solid straight sides will be a problem when the wind kicks up. I find this helps. Imagine putting whatever it is on the bed of a trailer and driving that trailer down the freeway for a while. If you think it'll survive, then you'll be OK.
It's going to be alright.

tent struck-ture

Post by EspressoDude » Thu Apr 06, 2006 7:05 pm

here is a view of the EspressoCamp tent structure during fabrication

Image

It has guy wires from the center column(2"pipe). Posts are 1 5/8" cyclone fence tubing. Joints are brazed fence fittings. Curved roof arcs and (not shown) wall arcs are 1" PVC electrical conduit

Image
It survived well in the 2005 wind storm. OH! the roof move to the top of the side columns

Very cool engineering and if it was painted orange it would remind me of those orange juice stands that used to be seen along the road...
Well if your old enough to remember..

Any thoughts on this? I have a potential glue gun art project. Do we want lights? Sound?

Anyone want to train as a Village Ranger?

Should I bring the EMT kit--or part thereof as our "well stocked first aid kit"?

I'll have to check if my fire extinguishers are 5#.

Are we at all interested in a stage?

Tell us more about the training...EMT kit sounds good never can have to much first aid stuff on the way there, there, and on the way home.

I think these are *all* excellent ideas...

Wasn't Sput thinking about doing Ranger training? I even thought about doing it. Can't hurt...

The stage?? Oh yeah. Since the "virtual" bar is essentially a stage, if we didn't have one... just wouldn't seem right. (We need a fireplace, too... Hmmm...)

The EMT kit? Brilliant!!! (ANd would immemorialze Scott's silent presence there as well... WAY awesome!!)

Back to fireplaces - I wonder if we can get a burn barrel or do like a heavy duty weber or something as a communal firepit? (I think theme camps are alowed burn barrels, aren't they??) If so we need wood, too.

Everyone should bring an extinguisher if possible - can't have enough.

(And you said you had no leadership ability... HAH! Knew better!!)

Robbidobbs needs a burn barrell to do her very important job. We will try and negociate with the llc/org for this.

I have posted the guts of the questionaire on the tribe site, in its own thread.

The EMT kit it has been suggested that Scott might want it donated to someone in a third world country, but since that hasn't happened in 3 + months, I think I can delay it for a few more.

Any thoughts on how to secure the Pole?

Would probably suck if the tent came down........

Pole has to be secured both on top and bottom.

In the Apokiliptika Kantina there is a set of struts that run from the top vortices of the structure to the pole support in the center. The pole support is (as I remember) mounted on wood. It all ties into itself.

The pole itself is pretty strong, and has "end pieces" (like end caps) that support it laterally and also provide an attacxhment for the base piece (see next)

The bottom again is a wooden platform, and should be anchored firmly ninto the ground. Wood is thick, heavy, and large to distribute the weight - 3/4" plywood?

Metalwise - brass is classy, but Chrome (or stainless) means it won't lose it's shine.

Biggie, tho,,, if one doesn't know what they're doing on "the pole" they can get hurt. Anyone who's ever danced a pole first checks it to see what she (or he) can and cannot do on that particular pole. Pole failure can cause serious injury or worse. Just so you know.

But you need a solid and secure pair of points to mount the thing from - the bottom is easy (board and stakes), the top is the tricky part.

How strictly do we police this?

It's hard, and there's not a lot you can do. Post a sign with weight/activity limits. MOST people don't get too athletic on a pole unless they really know what they're doing and are pretty physically fit. What scares me is some beligerant frat boy (or some other persona obnoxia) wanting to bully their way to anything and either taking the structure down or the pole or hurting themselves really bad.

What concerns me is the comment that there is no upper support to the pole... and without it you can't have a usable pole. You *need* it supported on top and bottom, otherwise it's just a decoration, or worse, an "attractive nuisance", and it'll at best get bent (and since poles cost at least $150, not an attractive idea) and at worst someone can get hurt bad.

Wish we had pix of the one in our Kantina last year. And it wasn't really tightly secured (not like in a building), tho it was usable if one was careful... but it gives you an idea of what you're up against...

I'll have to put a little engineering thought behind this. wanted to throw it out for ideas though....Agree with Mozy, the center tent pole won't work......

Potential Bar Names:
FireWater
The Oasis (like there aren't 30 other bars inBRC called that)
The Black Rock
Bar Barian
The Truckee (River)
Bar Tickular
The Pickle Jar
Moon of Alabama
Tar Pits
La Brea Tar Pits
Watering Hole
Sand Bar
Watering Whole
Beer Garden
Quench
The Publick House
The Publick Dome
The Publick Tent
The Chrome Dome
The Pavilion
Bathysphere
Swan Dive (we're not queer enough to get away with Greg Moranis's Memorial Swan Dive)
Jackknife
Cannonball
Belly Flop
Moe's
Duffland
On Duff Ears
The Ticket
Back of the Ticket
Ladies' Knight
Electric Larryland
On Playa
General Jack's Watering Hole

I figure those are collectively bad enough that someoen will come up with something so that we don't end up using one.

our group has built a self-standing pole for various events. It has a base that assembles out of 2x6"s with slots, top supports, and it fits into a standard room (8' high) I think. It disassembles to fit into a station wagon typ car. It is also on ball bearings so it spins really easy.

We have never had problems with anyone getting hurt, usually just a few drunks trying it and making fools of themselves. Those tricks really do take an amazing level off fitness and coordination to pull of gracefully...

I agree about sturdiness. The first incarnation quickly wore out the top and bottom supports, allowing the pole to wobble unexpectedly. I should say by this point 3 drunken ladies were all using it at once...maybe not the best idea.

I will see about a photo and some more details (I had nothing to do with it other than embarrasing myself several times trying it out).

Also couldn't we just bring a post hole digger and a length of 2" pipe? no top support needed.

They do not really like post holes but if we backfill carefully with water and tamping should not be a problem...

From what I understand, even with good tamping and water, the wind will dig it back out a month or so after we leave.
