Anywhere really. Contemplated hooking up with a theme camp but decided against it, I dont want to be tied to a camp when there are going to be so many wonderful things to see and do. It's probably a bad idea as we have no clue what we are doing! (We will do by August I hope!)So where are you camping anyway?

Wait a minute. If she's coming from england, she won't have much playa wear. I can dress her like a barbie! Use ball gowns have class...

It's a big frikken country and after a week on the playa I question how ambitious you will be. Go someplace with a hot spring, anyplace with some water really and a pool and you will need a day or three to sleep, eat and soak. Hookers and blow will sound like a peachy idea as you exit the big dusty.
It's 8-10 hours driving Vegas to Gerlach, to give you an idea.
Have fun on your grand tour. It's hard to go wrong in the western US, there's a lot of jaw dropping beauty whereever you look.

I'd rent a houseboat on Lake Powell and motor to a remote bay and loose the clothes and use the boat as a base camp for hiking, swimming, relaxing....(or take a water taxi to a remote spot and get dropped off)
the hot springs mentioned near Austin, Nv (Spencers Hot Springs are east of Austin on 50 and south on SR376 for 10 miles).. concrete bath tub size, no facilities at all... Dianas Punch Bowl is a cauldron further south from there, cool to look at.. I was a USFS Ranger based out of Austin back in 79

Yosemite is pretty spectacular. NOt it's best time of year, although the crowds may be beginning to thin out after labor day. However, if you want to camp there, BOOK NOW. It may already be too late.
Be aware that nearly all reservations for the months of May through September and for some other weekends are filled the first day they become available (often within a few hours)!
Main Site Of course you can stay in a motel outside the park and come in every day.

Right this is what I have come up with so far...
Way up- Las vegas->Death valley->Yosemite->Tahoe->Reno->Gerlach
Way down- Gerlach->Humboldt->Austin->Rachel->Las vegas
We arrive in Las vegas on 24th aug and leave on the 7th sept,
Do you recon we can fit all these places in realistically?
EDIT: Oh crap I forgot to include Bodie!

Since your going all the way to Gerlach you might as well come to Burning Man and spend a week in Black Rock City.Miss_Malibu wrote:Right this is what I have come up with so far...

Careful, there are two Humboldt Counties. One in Nevada, one in California. Get a map and plot it. For the California county use "Eureka" that's in or near it. THe American West is B-I-G, it's a real adjustment from England. I would suggest getting a road atlas--and there should be little charts that do driving times and kilometrage/milage. Decide how much time you want to drive each day and use that as a basis. I'm getting old so the idea of just picking one or two places and spending some time there to see it in different moods is appealing. But really, the west is out of scale to what you're used to. I'm betting lake tahoe is bigger than any freshwater lake or loch in the british isles, and it's not our biggest lake.

I think Tish meant Humboldt CA, on the coast, which will be out of your way down, if you go the way you've listed.Miss_Malibu wrote: Way up- Las vegas->Death valley->Yosemite->Tahoe->Reno->Gerlach

I'd recommend: Way Down - Gerlach > Reno (Hwy 395 So.) > Bodie, Austin hot springs, Mono Lake, Mammoth Mt area > Rachel > LV.
Assuming that's the way you wanted to go.....

Yeah, Humboldt county, Nevada, is NOTHING like Humboldt county, California. (And no, it's not the Nevada one that is known for it's herbals...) And it's a full day from Gerlach just to get to Humbolt County, CA, in the wrong direction.
Also... 100 miles is a LOT further than 100 KM. Almost twice as far. (In fact, yeah, find the distance in miles, and multiply that by 1.6 for an idea how far it really is in KM, then think of someplace in England that far from where you live - you may be shocked!!)
If you do go that way (the highway is 395 through Mammoth) when you get to Bishop there's an awesome bakery there (Schats, it's on the right hand side heading south through town) - people drive for hours (literally) to go there. Worth the stop!!!

I miss my bohemian days at Camp 4 in the Valley.... back then there were no boulders for campsite boundaries and the rangers never bothered the climbers there...
if the Meadows (Tuolumne) are open thats the place to be in late summer....
Mt Lassen would also be an awesome place, especially that late in the year...
