Here's what you do. Shortly before you leave for the desert, look up the vicinity of Reno, NV. You'll get a schedule of sattelite transits for various times.
Now, armed with that, run out at night at the right time and point to the appropriate area of the sky from which the satellite is scheduled to arrive, and scream: "LOOK! A flying saucer! Run for your lives!"

That might work if we all were carrying telescopes (or at least binoculars). Even the International Space Station isn't what I'd call 'readily visible' to the naked/untrained eye.
For what it's worth, though, the IKONOS satellite is scheduled to make a flyby and snap a pic Thursday, 31-Aug-2006 11:48am (according to this thread).
