I like the idea of Tree Names

Post by Stagger » Fri Nov 17, 2006 3:43 pm

Feel free to correct me if I am completely wrong here...

To my (inadequate) knowledge, The Green Man - is something of a spirit of nature typically associated with forests. His face is often seen surrounded by leaves. Ivy and other leafy greens are also associated with the symbol.

Hence I like the idea of Tree names for the streets.

Unless of course you want to talk about the "playful" nature of The Green Man ... who, in some traditions, is the one who will play tricks with sounds and get you lost in his world (i.e. the forest).

If you want to explore this you could have names like...

Amuse
Befuddle
Confound
Delight
Eros
.... etc...

OR... if you want to be completely off the wall... you could have names like...

Argyre
Boneste
Cobkintzl
Dejnev
Eudoxos
Fesenkov
Galle
Hebes

...... All names of places within a few hundred mile of Olympus Mons - on Mars....

... Well, where else you gonna find GREEN MEN?

...Carpobrotus edulis.

Actually the Green Man has it's roots in western European pagan mythos having to do with the cycle of birth-death-rebirth, and was adapted to the dominate Christian culture through various forms, particularly in the brewing of beers and ales. Therefore, I'd like to trow out at least one "B" suggestion:

Barleycorn

For "John Barleycorn must die"
(see Traffic: http://lyrics.ivory.org/johnbarl.html)

Other Green Man personas:

Puck
Robin Goodfellow
Gawain, The Green Knight
Tom Bombadil
Jack-in-the-Green
Green George

Expect the city to be located at the site of the 2005 event (as I understand it, the plan is to alternate between the site for 2005 and 2006, allowing more time for the playa to heal, and to study the impact a little more closely). Whether it will be oriented with 10 o'clock as north and 4 o'clock south (like it was this year), or 10:30/4:30 will mark north/south (as it did in the last few years) is still a guess. Street names usually come out in late spring/early summer, though maybe with the early theme announcement they've got the ball rolling on the street names and avenue info.

I think that naming the streets after plants is a great idea. I did a little leg work and the following plants are native to Nevada and on the endangered species list...

Ash Gumplant
Blue Yucca
Corkbar Fir
Devil Cholla
Englemann Spruce
Fishhook Cactus
G C Cotton Top
Hedgehog Thistle
Incense Cedar

What do you all think........

Nomenature, nice to see someone reference the non-enviomentalist side of this name. The green man has long been a symbol of death (Gawain & the green knight), and nobody seems to be jumping on that...

My favorite street names over the few years i've been to the burn were all of the planets in order. I thought that was clever, especially since each road is in the shape of a ring.

i agree that roads in abc order make for easy navigation.

I liked The Planets too.

Just yesterday I was driving in the country and came across a sign...when I came around to the front I saw that it read "JUPITER". Then I realized that the nearby grade school had set up a scale-model Solar System. (I didn't backtrack to see if they had a PLUTO.)

Seems like we're about due for an update on the website, regarding the city layout, street names, and art installations. Or am I just impatient?

We have a scale model solar system in Alton Baker Park, too. My HOWL chorus group meets near the Sun, a stone's throw from the Willamette River.

So we're the group that howls between the Sun and the Moon Image
