Apple CEO Steve Jobs chose that tender line from the timeless Beatles track Two of Us to describe his relationship with Microsoft chairman Bill Gates when they appeared on stage together today for the first time in more than 20 years.

It was just one of the countless adulations the pair poured on each other during their hotly anticipated 90-minute conversation at the D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, California.

Fireworks were expected, but nostalgia was the order of the day as the industry icons reflected on their joint history and pondered over the future of personal technology.

To the ballroom of technology workers and the thousands of online followers who had tuned in to see Jobs and Gates go head to head, the tech titans appeared more like old mates than bitter rivals.

The conversation, moderated by The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, began with Swisher asking each what the other's biggest contribution to the computer industry was.

"Bill built the first software company before anybody in our industry knew what software was, and that was huge," Jobs said.

"Apple really pursued the dream of building products that we want to use ourselves," said Gates, adding that Jobs always seemed to figure out where the next industry movement would be.

When asked what the greatest misunderstanding of their relationship was, Jobs joked: "We've kept our marriage secret for over a decade now."

Gates added: "Neither of us have anything to complain about, in general. It's been fun to work together."

Jobs wore his trademark black turtleneck, jeans and sneakers, while Gates was more formal, wearing a button down shirt, dress pants and shoes.

It could have almost been a scene from one of Apple's "I'm a Mac, and i'm a PC" ads, minus the anti-PC sledging.

"The art of those commercials isn't to be mean, it's for those guys to like each other," Jobs said when Swisher quizzed him on the ads.

"PC guy is great, he's got a big heart."

The mutual adulation and banter was interspersed with reflections on the early days of the personal computing industry, when Microsoft and Apple worked far more closely together.

"Let me tell the story!" Jobs jokingly quipped when Gates began recounting how the Apple II computer, first introduced in the '70s, used Microsoft software.

Both Jobs and Gates agreed that computers - Macs and PCs - were not losing relevance in a world where applications were increasingly being accessed through the web browser.

"The PC has been very resilient - its death has been predicted many times," Jobs said, after noting that desktop applications were far more powerful than web applications.

The last time the pair made a joint public appearance was in 1997 at the Macworld convention in Boston - Gates was beamed in by teleconference, and he and Jobs announced that Microsoft had invested $US150 million in Apple.

But no announcements came out of this joint appearance, with both sides getting those formalities out of the way earlier in the day.

Apple announced its Apple TV device would begin playing YouTube videos, while Microsoft showed off its latest innovation - a coffee-table shaped computer that responds to touch and to special barcodes attached to everyday objects.

Who gives a shit if two of the riches men on the planet get together. If we lived in a civilized country we would tax the hell out of them and use the money to give services to the poor and the hungry.

Gates is doing a pretty good job of philanthropy himself, I donâ€™t know about Jobs ,.. Gate foundation also backed saving the inheritance tax , the one the republicans call the death tax,... seems like heâ€™s planning on not trying to take it with him.

I'm not Repub and I call it the death tax too, and I'm all for it. That's what it is. I'm not a fan of softening edges. Tell things how they are and look at the facts. It's an inheritance tax and it's a death tax, same thing IMO. The main problem with it, is that the ones with lots of money, that it was basically designed for to prevent so much money from pooling, easily circumvent the law with living trusts, etc.

I've read that Gates is pretty good with redistributing his money, even in his will. I've also read that he has problems being able to spend it fast enough while keeping it well managed. I also don't think Gates personally is a good example of why very high incomes should be taxed very high. You're better off using examples of all the huge companies who keep buying up more, gaining more power relative to the people.

actually, my comments don't apply to you, because you took measures to feed yourselves... you worked.

re-read it... it didn't say the working poor... it said the non-working poor.

and hey, i went through my 401K voluntarily while i didn't work in '00 and '01... and... i didn't have health care insurance... but gee i got through it... and i am not working.

Bootstraps break! Sometimes even the best people run into market forces and problems that they can't overcome no matter how hard they try. Or in quite a few cases people are working, they are trying to make a go of it and better themselves but with medical bills and other factors they just can't put enough food on the table.

IMHO that sort of attitude sucks, and it's part of what's wrong with America these days... one should never be so high and mighty that they forget where they came from or they fail to stop and offer a hand up to those who are less fortunate. The karma gods can change your fate in an instant....tomorrow the person needing that hand back up might just be you!

Ok, Iâ€™ll give you that Joel. I have know those who couldnâ€™t put down the pipe long enough to work an 8 hour day, and those who felt to good to sell there lives working for â€œ the man â€œ but would be happy to get a free meal from him. But it is a complex issue, and I really donâ€™t want to see a gilded age aristocracy made up of those with inherited wealth gain through no contribution of there own and the rest of us being all working poor.

Do you use Ubuntu? I've always wanted to try but have yet to install it. I'll be doing a format on a computer soon and setting it up to play music for a sound system. Think it'd be worth trying for this application?

I have it on 4 systems now. I know there is a lot of music software that you can download for it. And there is lots of community support available online of you need help. There are a few things that I have not yet figured out how to do, as I said there is a learning curve. I have been running it for about 6 weeks or so, and I really like it. Definitaly give it a try.

I'll try it out. I was going to have my first XP box (yes I still run 98 with the unofficial service pack), but I'll put that off another week or two since I need it on my main one for a couple pieces of software that don't run on 98 anymore. Glad you talked me into it. Last time I installed Linux was 2000 or 2001 and some distributions were just starting to do self install with GUI but most installations meant you had to keep referring back to the readme file.

I'd go to source forge first and find some decent music apps first.
Also you may want to do a test of Ubuntu first on your system. Ubuntu reacts funny to certain configurations and sometimes it's hard to find the right drivers for certain sound cards and video cards.
If your configureation is right, it's great, but it really depends on what you want to do with your system. Me myself, I like it for making VOIP PBX servers. Great with Trixbox.

XP is a lot easier to install and picks up on plug and play just nice.
If you can, try and find a free copy.

It's also easier to host a website with XP.

Theyr'e all the same and all have their ups and downs.

And yes, Gates does more for world poverty with his and Buffets foundations than Jobs.
Jobs is a fashion geek.

There is no diffrence between the i-phone and the pocket pc. The i-phone looks nicer but the pocket pc does more for the buck.

I liked windoze 98.

I have just got around top trying my scanner. there is software and drivers and I can tell that it will work but I do not know how to configure it yet. My printer worked right away. I do not know how to play movies on it yet. But I can watch you-tube. Mostly I have not had time to play with it much.

I agree about computers. And I agree that XP is easier to use. However it is not the only operating system as microsoft would have you believe. The microsoft bussiness model is not necessarily to make a better product, but to crush the the competition. I think they have become a monster as monopolies often do. So I think it is time to go elsewhere.

Yep thanks for the tribe. The machine I'll be putting it on is mine, just not my primary. It's the one I'll be taking to Burningman to hold our digital media. I was going to mess with it soon, so I might as well try something new while I'm at it. My primary needs XP (or similar) because of a few applications I need that only run on NT based windows systems.

Maybe you have a point, I dont use XP a lot myself except with my end users. I'm a cross-platform kinda guy tho.
I do and am using winserver 2008, I kinda really like it but I like solaris, OSX and Ubuntu also and have to use them all professionally everyday.
speaking of which, seamonkey as a browser on all platforms is a must. I am totally diggin on this spell check in eplaya right now.......what was I sayin?????

I say try everything till you get to that comfort zone.
There is tons of free shit with MS and all of them. You just need to find what you want.

FF 2.0+ has spell check as well. I'm going to try out seamonkey, but what are some things you prefer about it over other browsers?

I use FF, adblock plus and fliterset G and I'm loving the lack of ads. I originally went to firefox because of all the crappy IE malware and tabbed browsing and haven't gone back.
