So...when are you going to start planning for next year?

All things outside of Burning Man.

some of whom really depend on me,
Is it too early to remind them of the phrase "self-sufficiency?"

These are people I like, and, my eplaya negativity notwithstanding, like me as well. Further, my absence will unquestionably be a hardship for them. I feel no need to further punish them with any admonition.

there are always powers of persuasion
How 'bout this: I'll help ya drink all that beer. I know you can't resist that one, R.
It could also make it easier for us to start getting to know one another in ways that we are not comfortable with...
You offering that as a reason NOT to do it, Zane? 'Cause getting to know more than just the words is bound to bring some reality that's inconvenient. Yay! sez I. Getting to know the full spectrum of a person, now there's yer fuckin' gift!

IMO, of course. YMMV, plus other assorted disclaimers.

As long as you recognize that that's your camel and not theirs,
fine. I camped with friends for five years. In the beginning, there were
several of us who were equally in charge (or not in charge). Attrition and
wandering attention spans made it so that last year, I was In Charge. At
the end of the event in 2002 I told them that I loved them dearly, but I
was burning the cornucopia of responsibility and if they wanted to do a
camp this year, it was up to them. They didn't. A couple camped with
Nuclear Family (and loved it), a couple went off on their own, the rest
either didn't return or didn't see me (which is just fine -- a couple of them
were real assholes). But there's no animosity or resentment, it was just
the end of an era.

Bottom line is, if it's too much for you, tell them they're on their own. If
they're your friends, they'll understand. If they're leeches, they'll be pissy
and you know you're better off without them.

I was only stating the obvious--nothing more.

Also, if we were really that interested in being comfortable, would we be going to Burning Man to begin with...?

Interesting thought....

I take your statement to mean physically comfortable, as in heat, sleeping in a tent, etc.

Mentally/emotionally comfortable? That's what i go to Burning Man for. I feel much more comfortable there being free to be who I am than here in the "real" world.

Thanks for the responses all, 'specially Ivy and Precipitate.

Another aspect of personal responsibility is a selfish one, that is, what you do you do for yourself. So, if you want something, say, a very cool shade structure/chill space, you do it for yourself and look for nothing from anyone else. Of course, you also then have earned the right to be choosy about who you share that space with.

With that in mind, I'm already planning structures and features of my camp in 2004 such that I can stransport them, build them, then tear them down solo if necessary. The challenge is to get a great result without it being a "forced march", and that challenge has a powerful draw to it.

Of course, I'm still keeping my options open.

im going low tech

Post by P-Mobius » Thu Sep 18, 2003 11:19 am

coming from across the continent theres only so much shit you can slog through the airport--next year ill scale back the costume/toy duffle bag severely

burningman at is core for me is about direct interactivity and portability and gifting---
other than 2-3 really kick ass outfits
i plan on making some cool necklaces which i can carry in my day bag to distribute
and at night ill bring a gallon or 2 of water with glow stick to replenish partiers

i know its not that original (but waitll ya see the jewelry!)---hey i get off on the low tech end of it --besides--i cant be too bothered with doing that much WORK at bman--hell its a vacation... building, cooking, manning a theme camp post--i survive simply on gorp and fruit

and

SOMEBODY'S GOT TO CHECK OUT THINGS RATHER THAN WAIT FOR OTHERS TO SHOW UP! i think about all the times i wandered into some reall cool theme site and no one was there because everybody was checking out other peoples shit

fact is among the 50+ folks in the west coast based camp i stay in there is basically an entire living room and kitchen filled with food and comforts embracing my presence... fruit just going to rot unless i eat it

theres so much abundance there that IVE GOTTA MAKE SPACE TO TAKE IT ALL IN---SO LESS IS MORE

low tech

Hey Piper. . . I saw your name and wondered if it was the same person. Good to bump into you again!

Tell us where you're camped next year and we'll be happy to include you in the fizzball game (when neither of us is on duty). We've already got the bat and moop bucket. All that's required is the cheapest/weakest beer you can find.

If you can make it to SF for Decomp, I think we'll be playing there too. We'll be in the vicinity of Playa Dust Camp, near the three-level dance/chill structure.

Start? I never stop...

My big project is construction of our fenceline flamethrowers; 8' tall, motion sensor & a small (4'-8') flame jet. Let's you know when somebody walks into your camp (See thread on wanderers). Also a front wall w/walkway for our camp.

I am chopping the tricycle I had this year to make it longer & motor powered.

We got our whole camp together on Sunday this year & everyone decided what they would work on, so we would have some focus.

Did that. The wood was hauled inside the oven itself and most of the weight for that was forward of the axle. There's a space in front of the oven and I filled that with flour and the other heavy items. Light things like unwrapped and fluffed-out tarps along the sides.
Fishtailing is an almost sure sign of not enough tongue weight, although tire inflation on a dual axle trailer makes a difference too.
Tires are little dinky 14-inchers and it's only a single axle, so that's probably a big difference. If I ever do another oven-on-wheels again I'm going to get an old horse trailer and cut the top off with a cutting torch — dual axles, brakes and lights already in place :)
Unfortunately, it you have a smallish car, tongue weight weighs the back of the car down and makes it drive worse.
I have an SUV, but it's closer in size to a Rav4 than to a Mountaineer ;) The tongue weight still weighed my backline down. :x
BTW, a chocolate fountain sounds great, and I'm not much of a chocolate fan.

Looked up the site and found out why they made you e-mail or call to get a price quote: price is WAY too high for even a small (12" diameter x 25" high). Put it this way, I need to board and feed my horse for the next year more than I need a chocolate fountain...
So next year, I'm bringing a chimenea stove. Less wood, no fishtailing trailer, plus there'll still be baked goodies and a nice happy fireplace to relax with friends around :)

For most Japanese made SUVs and PUs, the tongue weight should be between 40 (min, I think) and 200lbs (max). For smaller single-axle trailers like my new (in August) Snowbear, GVW is about what your max pull is, around 2000lbs. The idea is to load the heaviest stuff over the axle and try to balance out the load so that you can still pick up the tongue.

I like Kidsville, Lora, Kama, Flux, and all, but if there was an e-playan village I'd be really interested. I also for no communal kitchens...as much as I liked the Kidsville potlucks I seemed to miss many of them and it caused me stress I didn't need.

I know that I want to become a Ranger and I need to get started on seeing how to do that. Tiara, could you offer advice to save me some search time?

I also want to build a small art car but am holding back until the DMV changes are announced. I was also thinking of a small mini-theme camp, Pad 39C. (I kinda liked how Taosyty built their camp and admit I might copy the basic design and modify that). From my tagline you can tell it's beyond just thoughts, I'm trying to make it real.

Next year I won't have my mind occupied by the Tallinn project so I'm going to scale up a bit. I've even entertained the idea of buying a mid sized school bus to haul it all and serve as a kayak shuttle outside of BM.

That's probably it. She's a Mazda but you lift the hood on my beast and wow, it all reads "Made by Ford" under there...Ford tranny too, kicks ass in terms of get-up-and-go...just an Explorer with the nameplates switched out ;)

Okay, so let's just forget about towing a trailer for awhile...at least until I can afford that GMC...

Speaking of trailers

Post by diane o'thirst » Sat Nov 01, 2003 12:42 am

Did anyone read my post about the "two tongues/one big caster 4 cubic foot trailer" I made the other night?

Any guesses as to how to load a creature like that? My guess would be centred evenly and radially over the caster.

I'm already planning. I'm also going to do some prep work now that I waited to do until just before playa time this year. I'll be doing playa bicycle maintanence when I finally get them out of the trailer before they go into storage. I'm also starting to look for things to use for gifting next year now so that I have plenty of time to make gifts this year.

What he said.

RG and mylarry and I have the basics down for my proposed art installation. The food list is being revamped yet again, as is costuming. The essential don't forget list is also being updated, we forgot spring clamps of all things. (I didn't supervise the trailer packing, that's why.) And we will have a pack-up tote prepared, because we packed all our goggles and masks and snacks while when we did the trailer Monday morning. oops!

RG is supposed to work on his bike idea over winter. He's also thinking art car, which changes the vehicle/trailer/caravan configuration. We shall see.

At least they will be there to help with set up and break down.

Anyways, I started planning back in 2002, went in 2006, and am still planning, with revisions based on 2006 and stuff learned since then.
