OK OK. Let's get a grip here. Tolerance runs in all directions. And in order to to have tolerance you have to accept that other people believe what they do and then just live with it. And since this thread is Christian in in nature, IE poking fun at the bible. I will us that as an example. Begging your pardon Donna.
The very basis of Christian belief is that Christ is your savior. Whether you want him to be or not. And the only way you can be saved or get to "heaven" is to believe in him and accept him as your savior. Christ taught that we should love everyone. So if you are a Christian and are following that belief then you also want everyone else to be saved too. So it is natural for them to try to convert everyone else. That is Love.
And so we have the Christian tenet "And the truth shall make you free." Since, to them, the truth is that jesus is the savior and once you know this (and accept it) you are free to go to heaven and sing his praises and do whatever else it is that the angels do up there. The Key here, in the Christian faith, is that you have a choice. You do not have to accept jesus as your savior. In which case you do not get to collect your $200 and go directly to heaven. But obviously since going to heaven is so much better than going to that other place, who wouldn't choose christ if they knew the truth? So there is only one acceptable choice. Once you know "the truth"
Now some sects of Christians are overzealous about it and will beat you over the head with it and pester you to death about it and even try to force you to believe as they do and be baptized (the sign that you have accepted him as your savior.) Others are more passive about it. The Mormons have decided that if you do not accept jesus then you did not have the proper oppertunity or understanding. So they are going to baptize you anyway. 200 years from now they will dig up your name and someone will be baptized for you, just in case you change your mind in the next life. All of the Christians will talk about what they believe with an intent to get you to understand what they believe. (As will anybody else with some kind of religious belief.) In doing so it is their hope that you will understand and accept Jesus as your savior.
So in order to tolerate christians you have to accept that they believe that for you to attain eternal happiness you have to become a christian. And for their part they have to accept that we believe something different and are not going to accept jesus as our savior. At least not in the way they understand it.
So where does that leave us? Well we can all pretend that there is no elephant standing in the room and not talk about it. Or we can have fun comparing notes and examining the differences and, more importantly, the things that we agree upon and use that to build a better world.
I personally think that I have made some new freinds here (and in the scientology thread). And I kind of like that.
And don't worry, if the Christians are right, the Mormons have got you covered.

Sorry Donna.. In answer to your question.. I don't have a dog and if I did I wouldn't use beatings. I have a cat, and no I don't beat the cat. Contrary to what you may think I wasn't baiting you. I really wanted to know how you feel about gay folk. Personally I cannot get down with a system of beliefs that promote the killing of someone just because he gets down a little different than I get down.
Truth be told.. I don't believe that you are Christian at all, rather someone that thinks they are. I would say of all the laws "God" gave Moses you probably only follow 10 percent if that. And I don't hate you for that, I only tried to show you the error of your ways. You dodged it and made a joke. There is something concerning this in the bible but I will not get into it. I'm not really all that into hearing the plethora of excuses from so called christians as to way they ignore most of their faith.
I will however post some things that got me to cast aside the tripe from King James and learn to think for myself. I like MythBusters so we will use their type of reasoning.
Lets start with things that are just plain ABSURD
Genesis 1:3-5 Day 1 god makes light and dark.
Genesis 1:14-19 Day 4 Sun and Stars are made to produce light.
We KNOW that the light during the day comes from the sun.. so as they say this MYTH is BUSTED!
Genesis 1:11 Day 3 Plants are made, but the light to drive their photosynthetic process doesn't come till Day 4.
This MYTH is also BUSTED!
Still Christian you say.. still putting your SOUL on the line for that book. Ok wait.. THERES MORE..
Genesis 6:2-13
Ok.. still in the first chapter mind you we get really wild.
It starts with giant sons of god having sex with human women, these half breeds became important folks it seems. Than because everyone is so violent your god decides its time to destroy everyone. Now that sounds pretty friggin violent to me. So according to christianity and god right from the get go VIOLENCE IS THE ANSWER. I'm not even going to get into the ark and the tiny breathing hole for all those animals.
I cannot refute these claims so we will call this MYTH PLAUSIBLE.
Lets skip ahead some to some neat stuff.. I could spend DAYS on the old testament.
Revelation 14:1-4 Seems only a 144,000 VIRGINS are going to heaven, see it says as long as they are VIRGINS and didn't defile themselves with women.. check it out.. its in there.
Sorry Donna.. this one seems PLAUSIBLE too.. I cannot prove it wrong. I guess your going to hell. Oh well.. I bet you wish now you didn't believe that stuff. I don't believe that crap so I don't have to worry about hell. LMAO

What you say Box Burner is the PC Christian thought O'day.
He most certainly said, "Love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way you will be acting as true sons of your Father in Heaven. For He gives His sunlight to both the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust too. If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even scoundrels do that much. If you are friendly only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even the heathen do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is perfect." Matthew 5:44-48
So, we are to friendly to everyone we encounter and talk to them if they want to talk to us, but...
And he said to do the following to those who did not want to listen to the Gospell, "And whenever a village won't accept you or listen to you, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave; it is a sign that you have abandoned it to its fate."
There was to be no pushing or coercion in delivering the message. He told us to talk to those who wanted to hear, that's all. We are told to leave people who don't want to talk to us alone and whatever happens to them... happens to them.
This statement is not correct. It's not what Jesus told us to do.Christ taught that we should love everyone.

I think most of you must have me plonked 'cause I haven't gotten any responses on this thread. Nevertheless, I just have to say a couple things about Genesis. Many parts of the book significantly predate the Hebrews. And for centuries, Genesis through Numbers were transmitted orally. So when you read Genesis, try to imagine someone speaking to an audience of illiterates. The stories are dramatic and full of allegory. They are not meant to be taken literally. God appears in first person in part because it makes for better storytelling.
Take the creation story. I view it as the birth of (a particular kind of) spiritual awareness. The creation of light was the creation of an awareness of God. Etc.
Again, rational thinking is simply not appropriate here. We have science as a tool for rationality. But if you want to think about human relations and God, the Bible is the traditional starting place for our culture.

Toolmaker, did a Catholic priest scare you as a kid or something?
Seriously. You are trying to 'debunk' Genesis?
I'm an atheist (and no, most definitely NOT an agnostic), but less of a 'YOU ARE WRONG AND EVIL BECAUSE OF IT' atheist- and more of a 'non-existant until proven otherwise' atheist. But you are what I see wrong in terms of rabid atheism.
But to be Devil's Adovocate- could it be that Genesis is paraphrased? If the very concepts of light and dark aren't defined, then maybe God was creating the physical rule set by which physics/chemistry/etc. are defined. If these aren't defined, then maybe the definition of time and space aren't fully worked out- in which case a 'day' could mean anything. Or maybe trying to explain modern day physics would be kind of tough in 1000BC?
Why are you so obsessed with trying to debunk Donna's faith?
I mean, you seem almost religious about it...

then you should have just asked what I thought about gay people, God, and the Bible.
Jesus said, "Do for others what you want them to do for you. This is the teaching of the Laws of Moses in a nutshell."
There you have the summation of the Old Testament from Jesus Himself.
I think Jesus was very clear that sexual sin was not the "biggest" sin one could commit. Being a hypocrite was and wanting what was not yours. And besides, the message was a personal one - "and why quibble about the speck in someone else's eye - his little fault - when a board is in your own?" The Bible is a personal book to be used on oneself - NOT ON OTHERS!
Jesus said, "It is the thought life that pollutes. For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts of lust, theft, murder, adultery, wanting what belongs to others, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, pride, and all other folly. All these vile things come from within; they are what pollute you and make you unfit for God."
Personally, I get along with "gay" people just fine. I have never had a problem interacting with gay people.

Hi BC! I missed your earlier comment. have to go back and look.
In an an earlier post I referenced the bible as an historical document stating that Moses wrote the first books. I too believ that he (or whoever actually wrote them) just set down the oral tradition. Which had been much garbled over time before being written.

I am correct. The rain and sunshine fall upon everyone and hence, Gods Love. Keep in mind, as BC points out that literacy, although greater at that time than any before it, is still not very high, so everything is told in stories and parables.Donna Matrix wrote:What you say Box Burner is the PC Christian thought O'day.

The part about shaking the dust off is specifically meant for missionaries, or those who were otherwise teaching the gospel. It was to be a sign, and I will bet that it was a common one at the time (much like our middle finger salute), that meant I am not going to waste my time trying to teach you ( Since you so obviously don't want me to.) No god can't help you. But you are still going to get the rain and the sunshine anyway.
If loving your freinds and enemies is an example of the best and worst people we should love, then what about the people in between? the ones who are not your enemies and do not want to be bothered with your beliefs. Should we not continue to love them also? God does.

YHWH is the most common name from the hebrew text, but it was only to be spoken In the temple . The true pronunciation has probably been lost .Donna Matrix wrote:I am = God's name.
Although the old testament used a few other... plus there is the greek and hebrew pronouncations.
YHWH is the third person singular imperfect of the verb "to be", meaning, therefore, "He is". This explanation agrees with the meaning of the name given in Exodus 3:14, where God is represented as speaking, and hence as using the first person — "I am".
Exodus 3:14 (King James Version)
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you

- There's no denying that there are a few good ideas in the bible tossed in amongst all the rest. But do you really need a bible to tell you what should be obvious.... and what do you do with the rest of the package?
- As far as a personal book for yourself, I suspect much of the harsh reactions you're getting come from the fact that we've all been bashed over the head with a bible enough times that we've come to think otherwise. Also the bible itself extols the virtue of going out and converting the heathen - evangelizing.
- Given all the "vile things", bad acting that humanity is prone to, does the bible really provide the best roadmap out of our personal hells? It seems sadly wanting to me at best and at worst tends to push a lot of people into even worse states of self-loathing, shame, or in some cases full-on delusional states. (I think gods and devils is still one of the biggest hallucinations that the schizophrenic is prone to.)
- Finally in relation to roadmaps, the term "unfit for God" is a very dangerous concept. The bible is very clear at times that we can't exactly know the mind of god, but it sure does come up with a lot of strong suppositions of what god thinks about various issues.
My God allows all things, without punishment. (We do enough of that ourselves.... ) My God provided a very cool set-up for getting where you need to be by simply listening and responding to heart and mind.
My God's bigger than your God. My God's bigger than yours....
Come on!! Sing along everbody!!
Side Note:
I feel like an idiot. I haven’t been in the industry in years. And I realized I hacked a friends bit by accident. I want to give him credit.
The bible is a pretty good book, don’t like the ending though.

Sorry Mark wasn’t thinking.

Dana, I agree that many people have been thumped one too many times. But may I counter that those that thump are not "real" believers. They are facists, ur... I mean wolves in sheeps clothining actually trying to turn people off. The Bible warns of these.
All I'm saying is this: when I really looked at this issue many moons ago two things become apparent.
1. Jesus didn't hurt anybody and what he says won't hurt anybody either - so anybody who does get hurt is hurt by people not Jesus. Jesus should not be judged by what other people do, even if it is in "his name." These others just might be lying.
2. If the worse sin is hypocrisy (which I stated above) then isn't it kinda hypocritical to take advantage of "Christian" or Western culture and all the things it provides without doing your part in maintaining it?
Just my thoughts... These are the two conclusions I came to and why I now try to do my best to follow Jesus and maintain Western Culture - so maybe my grandkids (if I have any) can have the blessing I've had.
Disclaimer: I am not thumping anyone in this statement. It is only my own thoughts and conclusions.

We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

I'll take C. And the earth open wide and swallowed them all...... Old Testament.. during the time on Moses in the Desert. Can't remember exactly what happened but God didn't like it. I could look it up, but then Dick already knows where it is.. so I'll let him tell all.oneeyeddick wrote:How true, Donna of the Matrix, how true indeed............kill,kill,kill.....Donna Matrix wrote:I can sure see why wars are fought... lot-O-anger out there...
