> the doctors think I'm gluten intolerant.

See http://www.cieux.com/bm/quickMeals.html and search the page for gluten. There are several companies that make gluten-free meals that are ready-to-eat - boiling-water-in-a-pouch, pouch-in-boiling-water, and not heated or cooked at all.

My sympathies. The first day or two can really suck till you get acclimated to the heat and dryness.

[edit: Oh, and consider bringing canned fruit - pears, peaches, fruit cocktail to get you through the first day or two - wet and tasty when parched.]

And the sugar in the fruit will give you a nice little boost for a little while as well.

VINEGAR! SALT! JERKY!

Its true for me too.....the climate + excitement = different eating habits then I have not in that desert.

I have found that vinegary stuff is sooooo amazing out there....Just like a "vinegar playa footbath", your innards need some acid to balance out that alkaline. You will so crave vinegar!
Last year I finally bought special vinegar items and they were heaven: Really good garlic stuffed olives, or nice gourmet pimento stuffed.
Best quality pickles I could get: tiny ones, big ones. Dill, sweet. Yum.
Pepperoncini or antipasto in jars. Kraut if thats your thing....
You have to keep this stuff refrigerated, even tho its not that sensitive, but its OH SO WORTH IT.....
I never enjoyed a pickle so much in my life.
You will find yourself doing wierd things, like drinking pickle juice.
It clears your brain of playa dust just a bit!

Turkey Jerky is also my life saver....2 big bags gets me thru.
Last year I loved Gourmet beet and sweet potato chips. mmmMmm
I dont have time or energy to cook hot foods, so might as well get good quality snacks!
I also boil like 6 hard boiled eggs before Bman, put em in the cooler, and I have protien hits for the next 2-3 days.

I dont like Canned Tuna because its too hard to get the stink off me and I dont want to spend my whole camp shower trying to get tuna off my hands and face.

Another trick: using Irish Cream Baileys for coffee cream. No refridgeration needed!

All I need is one really happy hot cooked meal the whole week. Thats usually a camp planned one time event.

Don't use canned tuna.
Get the pouches of albacore.
If it stinks, it's cat food, not tuna.

Coffee syrup is a great thing to carry.
They don't have a decaf version though.

I've been eating McCann's Irish steel cut oats lately.
They have fast and instant versions, besides regular.
I bet that would be good out there.

Chinotto
So no one on this webhouse has ever tried Chinotto?
Ever?
No advice at all?
It's very different.

From the Lun China Box site:

has other tips on freezing individual portions and how to actually roll that sucker up so it isn't big and flat. Wow.

The photo is from Biggie's stream at

and he has more food prep photos there, including a rice ball mold.

A staple at camp is spaghetti every other day. You want to dance til' the sun comes up? You want to travel to the fence and back again? You wanna frickin' d i s c o t e q u e like a champ? Boil a big pot of spaghetti- super nourishing (high carb) and filling. Plus: cheap and ususally have enough to gift some bowls out---!Voila! Plus I've been gifted in the past a good simple warm cheese quesadilla (at night it's magic :D

EZ Cheese is not only one of nature's perfect foods, but it's also tailor-made for the playa. It needs no refrigeration, it comes in a dust-proof container, and it's yummy.

Oh yes we did!

Cook a tri-tip and a chicken at home. Cut up into bite-size pieces and make meal sized freezer baggies. Get antipasto stuff - jars of olives, peppers, mushrooms, yummy, hearty crackers, salami. Pre-cut fruits and veggies and bag up at home. Granola for breakfast. Jerky and power bars for walkabouts. Have three coolers - one for beverages, one as a freezer, one as in-n-out frig. Done.

Bachelor Chow - it is advertised on Futurama.
Do they have it at the Reno Costco?

Eggo waffles are great too, especially with butter and a 50/50 mix of maple syrup and Kahlua.

You're goddamm right I found a way to put booze directly into my playa breakfast food!

I am going to resist the great temptation towards a facile remark about Monkey Chow.
Instead, I remember reading once that you can supply all of your nutritional needs the cheapest with:
  • enriched flour
    nonfat dry milk
    margarine
    sweet potatoes or yams
    cabbage
I'm not sure about the ratios, but you could probably make some veggie-filled pastries that would be pretty tasty.

I'm sure the flavor is wonderful, and they don't mention how well mixed the food will be after the drive onto the playa.

Trader Joe's is large and in Reno. The $5 shuttle will take you into Gerlach and Empire. In Empire there is one general store, and they stock up with playa groceries for burners. The shuttle begins service on Tuesday if I remember correctly.
