Presenting myself...pimping myself...introducing myself...Hi
Hola...me llamo Bombachita....it means something similar to "cute chubby one".
2008 is going to be my 2nd Burning Man. #1 was in 1996. Yes, it's been awhile and this time instead of camping at Bianca's Smut Shack in an RV with a keg of Guinness in the fridge and popsicles in the freezer I am heading out in a GMC mini van camper....solita! By myself. But, I suspect...not alone for long.
Truth be known...I am a teensy bit apprehensive about going alone and at this point in the voyage not knowing anyone else out there. I suspect I'll run into some familiar faces but all the same (and given my tendency to keep busy, organize and to just want to help, damn it) I would l-o-v-e to be part of a theme camp.
Thing is...most of them scare me! I like wearing clothes (remember? cute chubby one? I wear clothes) and I don't know how to fire dance. Hee hee.
Is this too ridiculously long of a post? Probably! Anyhoo, please send me some leads...give me some advice. Again, last time I wasn't driving and was part of a camp. This time, I am going alone - have no idea where to camp. I would have gone with my hubby but he's hiking the John Muir Trail at a rate of approx. 16 miles a day so again, remember cute chubby one? I am not going with him. :-)

welcome bombachita! There are plenty of places for you to park your little camper all around the city. You don't need to be part of a theme camp for that. If you dont end up hooking up with a theme camp then just drive around and look for an area that seems to fit you and your vehicle. Stop and ask your neighbors if it's cool if you set up there (not necessary but makes for better relations and lets face it, you didnt come to BM to fight). They'll either tell you that they are expecting more people and that spot is "taken" or they'll tell you to go right ahead.

Thanks BitterDan!
And I have another question...is there a choice place to try and camp? Meaning is there a way I can estimate the distance from the evening activity and where it might be more subdued? Should I just have a look at the map when I get there?
I ask because I'd like to situate myself near enough and far enough :-)
So near enough that I don't have to hoof it so far (or bicycle so far) but far enough away so that the late evening revelers aren't "too" in earshot.
I know I may be asking for information that might not be known yet but I have to ask!
Thanks again,
bombachita

If you are concerned about noise then stay away from 10:00 and 2:00. Those are the where the big sound camps are located. I'd suggest camping in the center of the city but spot availability will depend on your arrival time. If you are showing up on Wednesday then don't expect to be able to park on A-E streets as those will most likely be filled in by that time. If you show up early on Monday then you can probably get a central location. I wouldn't worry too much about your proximity to the "night life" as the night life is everywhere at BM. In fact, it may be wise to camp away from any major theme camps if you want to sleep at all. There really is no where in the city that is too far from anything--you are less than a mile from any other camp--so your camp spot doesn't matter too much.

Welcome back!
Nudity is not a requirement Whatever gave you that Idea? The camp that I belong to, the B(o)(o)by Bar, has both members that do not care if they are seen naked and might even choose to go out in public naked, and members that would never go naked in public, or even in camp.. And no-one cares.
If you are looking for a quiet place that is not to far out you might inquire about hushville. But be forwarned... generators are not allowed.

Hi Box Burner!
No, the nudity comment was just me trying to be funny. It's more of the dominatrix stuff that occasionally accompany the nudity that's not my scene so I wanted to be sure I didn't settle down too near a place like that. Don't want to harsh anyone's mellow!
Thanks for the tip on hushville. I have a feeling I am going to pull a Goldilocks but will end with at a place that is "just right"

HUshville ... no gennies includes not running your car, no amplified music, and we're killer on LNT. No wiggling around the basic rules, "but a bullhorn isn't music"! Camping there requires pre-registration, which is not open yet. Pre-registration does NOT guarantee a place, it is still first come first serve except for a handful of interactive fringe camps which are placed. Check out the yahoo group on it.

Moving and going alone
Remember wherever you camp, if you don't like it, you can move. I've only been there once, but back in 2003 when I was part of a couple we moved twice before we found a place we could live with, and I don't like moving. The first place had a really loud generator next door that ran late into the night, so in the middle of the night we moved, then the second place still had too much noise, so the next day we moved again. We finally found a more quiet place. So they do exist. This year I'm going to get there earlier.
I'm going alone too. I met a woman coming back from )'( last year at travertine hot springs and she convinced me it's the way to do it. So I think you're on the right track going alone. But we'll see, having not done it that way myself. Perhaps I'll run into someone like you to enjoy a day of art with. I would like that.
Also, little by little I'm nailing down other people I know who will be there. Whether or not I find them in 40k people is anyone's guess. Last time I didn't find my friends.

going alone
Hi Howie,
Thanks for the post. It's good to get the feedback. I could guess what the woman you referenced said about the benefits of going alone: you do exactly what you want, when you want as the spirit moves you. Plus, since people are friendly, interactive and partying the opportunities to "join in" are steadily available. My spontaneous choice to buy a ticket and head out solo is being continually affirmed by the replies to my post. What constitutes “getting there earlyâ€
