Well, for what it's worth, EVERYONE is welcome to stop by The Livers End (not sure where yet...check with Playa Info) for a Little Black Dress Champagne Party the night of the burn. Saturday evening around 6ish(playatime). Of course, ALL are welcome any other time we happen to be serving from our full service bar!

<sigh>

Alright. We have identified the one, single fraking comment that could possibly be construed has being exclusionary. Still, it does takes a bit of presumption to assume that it was meant that way.

If someone had posted a thread that said "Hoping to compile a list for all my trance-loving friends. Trance events on the playa", would they be alienating the drum 'n bass folks? Is it somehow stopping the square dancers from stopping by and checking it out?

If it said "Hoping to compile a list for events for all my friends with kids", would it be oppressing the childless?

If it said "Hoping to compile a list for all my vegan friends" would this somehow be stopping an omnivore from taking advantage of the info?

And on what do you base your assumption that any people looking for queer-themed events to attend, are interested only in those events and nothing else. This is YOUR stereotype. This is YOUR generalization. This is YOUR misinterpretation. No one was asking for a ghetto. Info was simply being requested and provided, free for anyone to take advantage of. Again, if someone is looking for a listing of crochet-ing related events on the playa, does that automatically mean that they have no interest in any knitting or tatting events? I think not. It would appear that you have a pre-conceived notion of the motivations and intentions of people that you do not even know. It would also appear that you are the one who is pre-judging and labeling people.

I don't know neonbunny, I can only read his words. His words as written do not seem, to me, to imply any level of exclusion or ghettoization, but I am willing to believe that they could have been taken that way. That is very unfortunate.

I also don't really know Simon-on-the-playa. For you, also, all I can do is go by your words. It is certainly good to know that you are comfortable enough with the current state of the rights and conditions of GLBT people in our society and culture to come into a public forum and use some very powerful words with relative abandon. This makes me confident that the end of homophobia in our society is just around the corner!

And really, if after all your snarkiness your going to get bent out of shape about a good-natured joke on some of the stereotypes that are out there (the best music coming from the queer camps), what can I do?

OK. I've put away my bag of Troll Kibble. No more tasty treats from me. I certainly hope that this thread can continue with dispensing info about queer themed events on the playa, just like the many other threads listing events of different genres. I know that I will be attending and participating in a wide variety of such.

Thanks for all the insightful snark.

I can only speak for myself, as a gay man. But to me, some of the "you're being anti-straight" sounds similar to much of the anti-gay marriage politicos out there. Very often do we hear, "the laws do not disclude you, gays are very welcome to stop being gay and marry someone of the opposite sex, just the same as everyone else".

So please understand where some of us are coming from, when we hear something that sounds even remotely similar. Most of us who have grown up gay in this country have come under constant attack for our self-identity. Some have been attacked physically by others, some denied jobs and housing, and some thrown out on the streets and told by their own family they will no longer be acknowledged as family.

And with all that we have gone through, most gay, lesbian, bi, transgendered, so on, have come to realize that being homosexual (or etc), is not just about a man sucking another man's dick. In fact, a man can go through his entire life as a gay man, and never even have sex with anyone. Just as one can be straight, but also be a virgin.

And in fact, being gay (etc), is more about identity and culture. And thus, why we attempt to have gay related events. Similar to how the GLBT Parade in San Francisco (note, not the gay-friendly pride parade), attempts to strengthen the bonds in our own culture, as well as seek acknowledgment from our straight friends in society that this culture is real, and not just us in denial that we should assimilate into the straight world.

And thus, when we are at home, on the playa, some of us do seek out others who share a common identity and bond with, as well as to be able to build a culture, and share this culture with those of other cultures and identities.

Yes, we welcome straight people to attend these events. Come and learn about our culture and identity, and people may discover there is much much much more to being gay (and etc) than just sticking your dick in another man's ass.

I now return this thread to it's regularly scheduled program.

i too apologize for my normal un pc snarkyness....it actually is a way of wrapping a nugget of truth in a wad of horse-shit.

i have nothing against the gay community...my mother was heavily involved with the local theatre, i know every queen for 50 miles, and Holly Woodlawn (yes THAT holly) once stayed at our house.

i appreciate ALL burners, anyone that makes the journey is all right by me, i was merely pointing out the somewhat (and explained) closed tone to the post...believe me i hassled ALL so called "groups" who call out to others of the same "type"...

my american dream is a melting pot, where everyone contributes to the flavor of our great Nation...Queer, Straight, Black, White, Red and Brown. Republican, Democrat and even La Rouchees..

i might attend any of the above events not because they are "gay" but because they are Fun or Interesting, or my friends are there and have invited me along. That's what my little nugget is about...INCLUSION and the BURNER COMMUNITY as a whole.

i hope this clears things up...

now back to our usual snark...

Thanks for your kind reply.

I have on occasion (ok, many many times) attempted to make sarcastic remarks on an internet forum. And in my failure reminded myself that sometimes what I type online does not come out the same way, with my intended meaning, as if I was speaking one on one with a person.

And now for my own plug. Stop by the homo depot. The intent of the dance night is not just to create a space for gays & lesbians, but rather to share with the entire community (straight and not) the talents and skills that come from some in our own micro-culture.

thanks. now i feel bad for my snark attack.

goddamn neural implants are NOT working....must consult with the Dr. Lilly Klymer's manual, re-adjust the throttle for BRC.

again, i dont want to harsh anyones fellow (oh god, a full double entendre with a twist...high degree of difficulty....note to self, stop watching the fucking olympics)

i just wanted to point out what was said in another post by HarpMan...

"there are two types of people, burners, and non-burners, that is all."

Howdy ALL Burners! Glad to see you made it (or are about to) home.

Bootie BRC is queer-friendly, bi-friendly, and trans-friendly! As well as being straight-friendly!

We, who put on the party, are described in the above, and being an all mashup party, we tend to have a crowd as mashed up as the music!

Samples of tracks played at Bootie:
Cher vs AC/DC
Iggy Pop vs Peggy Lee
Daft Punk vs Britney Spears
Blondie vs the Doors
Missy Elliott vs Le Tigre
Scissor Sisters vs Lipps Inc.
General Public vs Rhianna

If you're looking for dancing with a queer friendly and mixed crowd, and something outside of electronica thumpy thump, and are NOT a music purist (you enjoy your music with an edge or mashed), then check us out!

About Bootie:
Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup -- and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with parties in six cities on two continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation -- with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

Bootie's resident DJs keep your brain guessing and your body dancing with creative song combinations, while guest mashup DJs from around the world are featured each month, as well as the infamous midnight mashup show. Bootie... because one song at a time just isn't enough.

Bootie Rocks!!!

But why do you have to be on the other side of the playa!!!

And yes, I really need to get up to SF and see the SF version more often.

We're right in the middle, at least for the Thursday Fandango Bootie BRC! :-) Fandango is right behind Center Camp! We hear there are a few parties in our 'hood that night, including the Burning Marys' Thursday event.. you should venture over that evening!

As for the SF version, you should, it's the biggest and best Bootie we have! ;-)

I've never seen outright homophobia at an event, per se, but I've heard the occasional 'fag' being yelled on some of the darker streets when they thought no one would see them... but only towards the end of the week. Perhaps stopping door ticket sales will keep the 'lets go look at the freaks' types that show up on Friday out this year.
