Bambi, Need your Loving Thoughts Now

Post by cowboyangel » Wed Nov 26, 2008 9:11 pm

Jackie has cancer. It's in the rear toe right now. Next week she gets x-rays to see if it has spread. We are both broken up about this. Jackie is almost 18. She's had a very good and exciting life. I can't even think about this.

Buckets of tears. Buckets.

I keep two of my idle computers working to help find cures.

One PC is working to cure cancer, here is where you can go to help cure cancer..

Another PC I have is currently working on the AIDs project..

You dont have to do anything technical, just install the client program which works while your machine is idle. With many computers networked worldwide we are capable of getting research done in a much faster timeframe.

The technical term for this sort of thing is "distributed computing". I've been doing it for a number of years now and haven't had any negative impact to computer hardware aside from the fact that the machines stay on 24-7 now.

I am so sorry to hear this. I recently met a woman, in her late 50's. Had breast cancer 10 years ago she had a mastectomy. Good for 3 years then something returned. It was treated and she has been clear since then. Good luck and if you wish to talk about it....

love you guys. every fucking last one of ya.

I'm so sorry about Jackie, cowboy.
My hope is that it is something that can be taken care of. If it is in her toe than possibly removal of the toe , which is pretty minor. I am hoping that it has not spread and you will have more time with her.
I lost my Ricky to lymphoma this year on memorial Day.He was born on Memorial Day in 1996. It was an amazing 12 years with him, and I miss him as much as any human being. It had progressed too far for treatment to be benificial, but I was able to enjoy the time I had left with him.
I know what you are feeling right now and it is hard. I can easily cry those buckets right along side of you. Jackie is a special girl. Do whatever you can to help her, but know you have had just as important place in Jackies heart as she does in yours. You know they let us know in so many different ways. I always say there is nothing like a dog-person. Just love her. You will know what to do. I'll be thinking of you two at the table today.

I may not be rich enough to help with cash or smart enough to do research myself but running my PCs in these projects for wealthier and smarter folks than I to get shit done is the least I can do. I don't know how many years I've been involved in donating PC time for distributed computing but I know its been at least 5 years. I started with SETI and the FOLDING projects but feel better about the two I'm with now.

Cancer totally sucks ass in the biggest way, and we are only getting more. This is one of those things that affects everyone somewhere if not personally than in your family circle or friend circle. I had a very good friend beat cervical cancer so there is always hope and a future as long as the fight is fought hard.

Cowboy I hope you all are pulling through this and eventually beat this thing.

Thanks Bambi and all of you. I really appreciate this. I'll keep you posted here.

I have transported many patients with cancer, often to radiation oncology centers. Some of them were pts. who went into the er with a complaint of headache, only to find out they have brain ca, which is pretty rapid and fatal more often then not. I have read that we are seeing more cancers then we used to because we are living longer, so it is giving our cells more time to mutate. I also think that the increasingly greater influx in chemicals in just about anything anymore would be suspect as a cause.

Toolmaker, I agree with you, cancer sucks big time, but the progression of the disease usually allows the pt and the family to prepare for whatever outcome. I have found medically, that massive, acute strokes seems to be even more devastating because there is often no warning. Many times the pt is found in bed in the morning unresponsive. And these pts, if they due survive often end up in a nursing home no longer alert or oriented. I had one recently where the husband was watching the ball game on tv. The wife was in another room, and eventually realized she hadnt heard him hollaring at the tv as was the norm for him, when she checked on him, he was unresponsive. Unfortunately, there is a 3-ish hr window to treat clot based strokes and that had passed by the time we got him to the hosp.
Fatal injury accidents and suicides also are very devastating to the families because of the suddenness.
I am not trying to downplay cancer, or its affects on patients or their families but it does allow them to process it better, to work through their grief process in often startling ways...
