Playa dogs?

Post by PEZ » Tue Mar 31, 2009 9:01 am

I know that bringing your dog to burning man is shunned upon, not allowed, and a harsh environment for an animal that cannot easily adapt on it's own.

I have had to leave my little guy at home with my roommate these past two years of having him and I know that is pretty hard on him. I now have a new puppy and my roommate has more responsibilities this year so I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them this year. At the same time I can't miss this years art theme. I wasn't really satisfied with "The American Dream" and "Evolution" is right up my alley.

There is the chance that I might be able to leave them at my parents place with their dog. I'm crossing my fingers.

I did however see a little white fluffy dog running around a campsite last year as well as a larger bull type dog walking around with a DPW worker.

I was wondering if you work DPW are you allowed to bring your little friend along with you? How does that all work, why am I seeing these dogs? How can I get mine to tag along for the experience and still abide the rules?

Thanks!

Light and Love,
PEZ

The DPW dogs are grandfathered in. Best bet is to contact the DPW and see what their rules are for volunteers. I don't get a good feeling about this at all.

We're going to have to pay to board our dog this year. Our resident housesitter now goes to the event.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I figured. That the DPW dogs belong to volunteers that have been doing it a while and created a good report for themselves.

Thanks!

I've been to Burns back when dogs were allowed. Let me tell you that it's not fun to listen to a dog bark and howl itself hoarse when left at camp in the tent. It's no fun to be packing up on the last day and see a loose dog running in a panic away from all the strangers who are trying to catch it to save its life, as it pants and can't find water to drink. Now I know you'll never let your dogs get away from you at Burning Man, just like those other owners knew they wouldn't. And I know you'll never leave your dog alone in the camp, you'll always take it with you where ever you go, with water and shade for it during the day.

I really don't like to sound like such a beotch - but the thought of anyone bringing their dog to the playa just pisses me off and makes me want to do bad things.

I have watched some of the DPW dogs - and their suffering with the heat, lack of humidity and exhaustion. They are watched very carefully by the members of their DPW "family" and usually have been to the playa more times than most of us.

Please don't make the mistake of thinking that volunteering for DPW is a way to get your dog in to the event. The animals that are there and their owners have paid their dues over a long period of time.

There are tens of thousands of us on the playa that have left our animals at home. They are no less special than yours. There are reasons they are not allowed, most of which have to do with protecting the animal.

If you can't leave your dogs, DON'T COME!

PEZ, under know circumstances allow yourself to fall under the spell of the cursed sad puppy eyes....

Image

They mean to place you under their spell and get you into trouble. Whatever you do don't let them talk you into taking them to the burn, they do not belong there as it is our spot, it is us, the 2-legged animals that have marked our spot in the desert. Buy them a new bag of Kibbles and a new chew toy, they will be fine.

Of course they may chew up your slippers while your gone
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Tell You what (fluffy) White Dog is the most well trained Dog I have EVER run across IN my LIFE!!! and I love Doggs and have talked to plenty of them. That Dog is ON IT! She (pretty sure White Dog is a girl) carries around a ball. I didn't know I wasn't suppose to throw the ball for her (she asked me to)... ANd the White Dogs Human (a DPW girl) came unglued and screamed at White Dog & Me NO FETCH! WHITE DOG STOPPED IN MID FLIGHT!!!! I'm not even kidding- Mid Flight ! and I got a lecture of how the Playa is hard enough on the paws- SOoooo No playing ball with White Dog. If anyone knows White Dogs name please share it with Me.

( I think White Dog protects Vampires)

Do Mules? But that wasn't my point...his comment of 'if you can't, STAY HOME!' sounded EXACTLY like the admonision many give regarding the aformentioned items. (Oh, and they do get lost and some get their owners confused, so two out of three might apply.)

To all the stick-in-the-mud negativos out there. I guess I might have mentioned that this will be a sober year for me at the burn regardless if I would have my dogs or not.

Also, my dogs go with me pretty much everywhere. I am lucky enough to work out of my home most of the time and when I work off site they are usually with me also. So that is how it would be at burning man if I had my dogs with me. They would just always be with me. I would not leave them at camp alone.

I also love how a bunch of other people decided to blasphemize my idea after someone already answered my question and I agreed with them.

snap snap snap goes the ego.

Love and light,
PEZ

I have aspirations to volunteer for DPW whether or not it means my dogs coming with me thank you very much.

Maybe it would be good if you didn't let your thoughts control you so much.

Please don't pass judgment.

Simple question with a simple answer that already was.

end topic.

Signing yourself like that, Shirley, is the ticket into the new and improved DPW.

Make sure you mention how fucking lovely and light you are in the volunteer questionnaire.

And your little dog, too.

The idea of bringing a dog to Burning Man seems incredibly selfish to me.

What would happen if it went into heat stroke, there is basically nothing you could do for it.
There aren't vets walking around with their medical gear, now are there?

please do not bring your dog to the playa. besides the harsh environment and 24 hour responsibility (sober or not), have you considered what might happen when your little guy is spotted and you get confronted by Rangers and/or Bmorg officials who might just ask you to leave the event (for the safety of the dog)? Hate to miss you at the burn this year...

Please bring your dog to Barbarian Camp where it will be smothered in barbeque sauce. Please call ahead with information about the dressed weight of your dog, that way we'll know how much charcoal to prepare. Thanks.

Um. The banning of dogs from the playa has a history, including trouble when dogs were allowed. Even if we stipulate that you would treat yours with love, respect, and allow them everything they need for a happy burn the argument will turn on, in part, that old Fourth of July thing about keeping your animals inside when the fireworks go off. I don't care about your dog relationship, if the llc was to allow you, they'd have to allow others. Where should the line be drawn. Better too conservative than too free. It is only a week.

Pez

All snarkiness aside, leave the woofer at home.

For the past 20+ years all of my dogs go just about everywhere with me, including work.

I would never never subject them to 7 - 12 days on the Playa.

Just my 2cents.

Here is a cut and paste of the doggy policy. They will turn you around at the gate, and should you sneek the pooch in, they will find you and boot you out. Here is the blurb:
**************************************************
Dogs. Love'em and Leave'em. Due to the numerous issues surrounding dogs at Burning Man, the organization has decided that it is not fair to dogs nor participants to allow them at the event.

Do not show up at the gate with your animal at Burning Man and expect to be admitted to the event. Reno is a long way to drive back and try and find kennel space during the generally pre-booked week before and weekend of the Labor Day holiday. The best thing to do is to plan ahead and find a petsitter, family member or friend, veterinarian's kennel or boarding facility in your home area that you have visited and feel comfortable with. If your pet will be staying somewhere new and unfamiliar, take time to introduce them (several times for short visits) to the person or place that will be caring for them while you are at Burning Man and that may reduce the anxiety they may have of being away from you. Remember to leave your veterinarian's information with the caretaker and clearly explain any medication or special treatment your pet needs while you are away.

The weather conditions and "alien" environment that makes Burning Man the unique event that it is, is not viewed the same as us by a one to three foot tall, four legged, non English speaking, fur coat wearing canine. The alkaline soil is corrosive to noses, paws and bellies. Dehydration and heatstroke happen very quickly and there is no animal medical service at the event. Pets are also prone to responding adversely to loud noises, huge sound systems, explosions, fireworks and crazy costumed people. Many animals have been lost each year and problem dogs have caused disputes between camps.

This decision was made with the utmost concern for the health and well being of both dogs and participants. As fellow participants and animal lovers we thank you for understanding and implementing this policy.

Hey Elorrum, are you seriously condoning "pocket-dog baseball", a brutal (and probably barbarian) so-called "sport" where the poor li'l pooches are the ball?

If so, count me in! Can you say "theme camp"?

Terrible, terrible idea. Oh yah, and I try to consider the playa on of the few places that I don't have to step in dog shit. So please keep your dog home, safe and where it belongs. Plus, most dogs don't do well around loud and constant noises such as explosions, fireworks, fire cannons, etc. It sounds horribly stressful. If you love your pet, keep it at home.
