Anyone have experience with electric scooter a la playa?

Anyone have experience with electric scooter a la playa?

Do they work? Or get stuck in the dust? We might buy some so we're curious.
If you know , it would be appreciated.

Depending on the winter & summer weather, snowmelt, etc., the playa may be hard & dry, soft & dry, or soft & moist. Any particular year there could be dunes of blown dust, and every year the dust kicked up in the wind and by vehicles can affect anything mechanical. There's also the risk of being severely mocked for kicking up dust in people's faces and generally looking like you're in a feckless hurry to get from the middle of nowhere to somewhere slightly on the edge of it.

I imagine the Alkalai dust isn't good on electronics in general. Moving electronics even moreso.

Along with being Bob's above stated asshattery status symbol.

Then again, what do I know. I've yet to even go to BM.

This thread contains a discussion of scooters on the playa:

http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic. ... ht=scooter

In general, using the search function (in orange text with a white magnifying glass icon) at the top of the page is the best place to start any inquiry.

Perhaps I need to restate the question. I asked, Does anyone have any EXPERIENCE with electric scooters on the playa. IE Do they work? I did not however, ask what peoples personal opinions about the "burniness" of scooters as a concept. This i sall I got from many of the threads including this one.
I could care less how annoyed you by last years scooters. Tell you the truth I was most annoyed by peoples constant policing of other peoples actions.

Once more, ANYONE KNOW IF THESE THINGS WORK ON THE PLAYA?

thanks.

Good Point Moshe...

Most of those threads end up being thread drift, about how they feel about someone not walking or being burny enough to ride a bike instead. You job should you accept it Moshe, is to keep this thread on the topic "Information on operating a scooter on the Playa , What types of scooters work best and which works worse, and why, Proper care of the scooter out on the Playa, Tricks and tips you might have learned from experience and finally, can you tell me some of you're experiences you had while operating a scooter on the Playa.

You take your electric scooter out there and your money will be wasted by day 3.

Count on it.

my campmates had some last year.

and yeah, it was at about day three that they started to bite the dust, as it were.

out of 4 of them, none were functional by the end of the week.

As we have stated in very plain language, the playa is a crappy surface.

Is a particular vehicle is suited for driving through clay/silt dust? RTFM before you leave Toys R Us.

A major problem with two-wheeled vehicles is that it's mostly impossible for your average (l)user to stay under the speed limit of 5mph, not kick up dust, and still maintain balance when weaving through crowds of people, knots of bicycles, and careening bar cars, but you'd already know that if you've ever been to Burning Man or done a minimal Search on the eplaya.

Your query is similar to asking whether Segways would "work" in Iraq -- when they don't even "work" in San Francisco.

Ah, but has that hypothesis been proven in a double-blind study? Can we even state that hypothesis in such a way as to make in disprovable? Scientifically Inquiring minds want to know.

there are a small number of things that are required, from a legal standpoint, for the event to happen. bob has, on a regular basis, been one of the people who facilitates those things.

it is true that he's not unique, and someone else could fill that purpose. unfortunately for your bet, they're all people like bob...

i take that back.

they're not all like bob. most of em would tell you to figure your own shit out and get the hell out of their way so they could do their job, and kick you in the nuts if you took too long.

What makes electric ones so much worse on the playa than the gas ones? I've seen people talking about gas ones and they seem to stand up to the playa. Of course they are loud and obnoxious.

I was considering an electric one myself since it would not have the noise factor the gas ones have. (cost may kill the idea)

Both gas and electric have the motors very close to the ground (dust collection).

Both have some electronics, spark system for gas.

Electric have sealed motors and batteries, gas is an air breather and can clog with all that powder.

I've seen both electric and gas with fat tires.

So I guess I'm wondering has anyone had their gas powered ones die too. Are both equally prone to early playa deaths?

Just so you know I am most likely bringing a bike instead, so lets not turn this into another round of scooter bashing. But if scooters are going to be there I would prefer clean quiet electric over gas.
