Memorial Day Weekend on The Playa
Is there going to be a large turnout for this coming weekend??? Any idea how many people will be out here?

Straight up...I have never been to the Playa! I live here and work here but I haven't had the time to PLAY here YET!!! I work at the gypsum plant and when I am off work I am working on our place here. There are a zillion projects that need to be done. I am hoping to make a trip out on the Playa soon...even if it's just for the morning.
I will ask some of the guys I work with, they are out in the desert often on their quads. they would be the ones to ask.
I thought the event was a BM sponsored thing. I heard there is going to be a live band and raffles. Tickets to BM are on the list of prizes too.
I am not sure exactly...but I think tickets are $75.00 for the weekend.
I am sure there will be someone else on here that actually knows!

I'm so glad you are there doing what you're doing -
Sorry I don't have any info on Memorial day weekend but the recent JackRabbit Speaks mentioned that the playa is still wet. That's a good omen for later in the season to cut down on the playa snakes (small dunes that throw you off your bike)
I will be around for 4th of Juplaya though and I will make it a point to stop in to say hello and thanks for getting the place up and running. We need you and appreciate you!

Thanks Mojo! We are all trying to get EVERYTHING ready! 40-50,000 people is ALOT to prepare for! I hope the burners are an understanding group. There may not be quite the massive preparations this year...we are still rebuild the business, one load at a time. Hopefully...Our Karma has run over his Dogma!!!

I always stopped in to get a tub of potato salad, cold sodas, and some candy; Non-perishable food plus some last minute forgotten items like batteries, condoms, cigarettes, etc...
Burners might take the shuttle in during the week for goodies like perishables. General store like stuff would be good too: like twine, tarps, camping stuff. Repair kits, hardware, bike stuff, books/mags, small propane and butane bottles, flashlights and blinkies, tires and tubes, assorted nuts/bolts.
Arrangement was a camping isle, a hardware/tool isle, sandwich bar with microwave, chairs and table corner, and a typical mom/pop store setup. Homemade cookies were good. A rebuilding donation jar would get a lot of dollars.
_________
Edited to add booze.
Oh, and inexpensive beer, wine, liquor would be good. PBR is popular as well as generic vodka, whiskey, and mixers...

YES!!! any and all input is great!mojo wrote:Since you haven't yet been to the event, do you need us to give you any suggestions of merchandise that we think you may want to stock up on in anticipation?
I am about one or two nights away from publishing a store website.
I had to go with http://www.theempirestore.com I tried to get it without the word "The" but another store(In England, I think) has that. I have never done anything like this (website design) so it's going kinda slow.
Anyway...there will be a page to click on called contact us (real original huh?) and I will check it daily and relay wants and needs to my Father-in-law and have him try to include the requested item in the "list".
Oldman...Thank you~ The general store stuff and camping stuff is definitely on the list! There is already some (not much) of the items you mentioned.
We hope to bring in more all the time.
Beer, Booze and wine...got em! Runnin' kinda low on beer right now though! It was almost 100 here yesterday! Great beer drinkin' weather.
I drank beer and worked around here as well as in my veggie garden.

Yeah...we tried...it seems the previous tennant fucked CocaCola over and just like all of our other accounts, he did it in our company name...not his!!! So when Pops called Coca Cola in Sparks, they pretty much told him NO!oneeyeddick wrote:Ya gotta get a soda machine in there for icy drinks....oh yeah, I suppose you will need an ice machine also !!!
Be sure to keep sugar cubes in stock also, Absinthe drinkers always need em'.........
Maybe I can talk to the Coke rep myself and see what it will take to mend the ties.

My god - you really have to fuck a pop vendor to not get an open account.ibdave wrote:Trust me, PEPSI is BETTER.....mykidsdaddy wrote:Yeah...we tried...it seems the previous tennant fucked CocaCola over and just like all of our other accounts, he did it in our company name...not his!!! I know your cash strapped, but buy the first load in advance and see if they will work with you. We pay 20 cents a can from Pepsi for our machines in our shop. That's delivered, and put into the machines that they gave us - loaned us whatever.

CocaCola came a few weeks ago and picked up what was left of their machines. Vending machine out back looked like it came from the dump. And the fresh soda dispenser inside the store...all the product lines were solidified. The machine was probably taken back to Sparks and disposed of!
Like I said...I think I will call them personally and see what's up! I usually don't get involved in what is going on with the mgmt' of the store. My Father-in-law is running the show and my Brother-in-law...The Omnipotent Vice President and General Manager is quick to voice thoughts and opinions that should be just that!
I agree with you 007...there must have been some serious bridges burnt. I believe with some tact and diplomacy I can probably get something going.
Like I said though...The previous tennant REALLY jacked these guys around.
The Coke Company let him use a special event trailer and he didn't return it. I THINK it was picked up with the vending machine and dispenser a few weeks ago too. I say I THINK...because it wasn't on or near our store property! Someone towed it outta here around Oct 1st 08.
I think this is why we are being blackballed.
Oh yeah..Pepsi still needs to come out and pick up what is left of their cooler and vending machine also! Again..."rubbish" is being generous!
Maybe that girl left her sign around here somewhere...
I need a Miracle

Re: Memorial Day Weekend on The Playa
I don't know how many people are going (I think they are expecting 500). It's through the friends of the black rock (http://www.blackrockfriends.org/blackrockrendezvous/) and the RGJ did a fantastic article on it over the weekend. My husband and I will be out there this weekend. I'm bringing organic wasabi/sesame hummus to the potluck on Saturday night...mykidsdaddy wrote:Is there going to be a large turnout for this coming weekend??? Be sure to put a nice big label on that, some people have severe reactions to wasabi(asthmatics and such).Goddess_Lisa wrote: I'm bringing organic wasabi/sesame hummus to the potluck on Saturday night...

It was so awesome that we're already planning to go to the Rendezvous again next year! We worked out on the dunes restoration project with the Friends of the Nevada Wilderness/Friends of the Black Rock and the playa was DRY. We had one mild dust storm, thunderstorm, and rainstorm.

Don't load that gun quite yet. I just read this in the thread "Playa Conditions 2009":
"Anyhoo, we just went to the Black Rock Rendezvous, and aside from being not very Burner friendly, it gave us a nice preview of Playa conditions. It really looks great so far, dry, cracked and hard-pan...as it should be! Keep sacrificing those buckets of Kentucky Fried Chix, it's working! Now, if only all the motor cross assholes won't keep scarring it up! On second thought, spare the KFC and sacrifice the bikers!"
Frankly, I don't know what to believe. I figure we'll just take it as it comes...so to speak dick.

Well, it seemed so to me as I helped clean the playa ... after a year, I picked up a dozen or so sequins and beads. By the way, anyone lose their false teeth at the party on Saturday night? I found those as well and passed the piece on to the Friends wagon...

I do predict dust. If you need, I have a vintage sari you can have to wrap around your face as you fellowship in the shelter of someone's tent...oneeyeddick wrote:

Yeah, I know ourania, I saw that too. but "It really looks great so far, dry, cracked and hard-pan...as it should be!" sounds great on paper, but that would also be the description of last years playa, with the addition of "some loose dust piles , here and there"
we are going out there for the weekend in two weeks, I will drive a 18"spike into the ground, take pics of it, try to rock it back and forth, take pics again, drive the RV with it's pizza cutter front tires back and forth a couple of times, take pics of that, and so on.
The "hard-pan," description is nice to see, but the depth of that hardness is what really matters here, or more importantly in that other thread about the playa conditions over yonder.
No offence meant, Goddes Lisa, glad to have another newb from Reno with enthusiasm onboard here.
