Idea: maybe add some "Indiana Jones"-style roleplaying danger to it the obstacle course:
If you have a rope bridge --or just a piece of rope between two poles-- have it over a sheet of black material that is a "bottomless pit". Or, have 1-foot-long pool noodles standing upright under it, like a Burmese tiger pit. A *soft* Burmese tiger pit, but a Burmese tiger pit nonetheless-- we wouldn't want to permanently maim the participant
.
At another point, maybe have another "bottomless pit" (ie. some black material), with some four-by-sixes and rope. The idea is for the person to craft a way across.

P.S. Yeah, I was a LARPer geek from way back
. I once hosted a "dungeon crawl" that incorporated some of these elements.

Wait, we're ruined, this place has it all:

Ooops, it's in Japan, probably in the middle of the Japanese high desert.

I wonder if there are elements from the "Sasuke Park" portion that we could incorporate into the obstacle course?Ugly Dougly wrote:Wait, we're ruined, this place has it all:

(Edit: found this on YouTube; something to consider: )

I think that I have Nagano's epic run earlier in this thread. The Fisherman still rules!
We'll arrange a trip to the Hof and see what we come up with. Trying to stick with what is:
1. Buildable fairly easily and cheaply
B. Transportable
III. Burnable if possible.
Finally: fun, challenging and self-explanatory to clamber upon.
Based on a canon yarn, maybe something like this:
Cut milkjug in half with a blindfold (in the tavern)
Vault over a low obstacle (escape the tavern)
Climb over two high (8') walls (enter the garden)
Stand with your back to a mat, turn and cut it (dispatch the lion)
Climb up a 20' rope a few times (scale the tower)
Pick up a heavy object and throw it (squash the spider)
Now you wouldn't have an idea what I'm talking about would you?

I brought back a nicely warped 4x6 for the "extra challenging" balance beam..........
Wolfe:
yes, burn it.............that's the idea............IMHO.........
UD:
climb a 20' rope?......... you mean, lay it on the ground and crawl along?
oh yeah, it's the difference between how high or how long, it is..........

Reminds me of that Monty Python episode where the "mountain climbers" are laying on the sidewalk and the camera is tilted 90 degrees making it look like they're scaling a Dangerous Mountain.
Don't get worried. In the story I was rhapsodizing and brainstorming over, it's actually a 150 foot climb. 20 feet is a somewhat safer distance to fall. If there's a shitload of padding at the bottom. Maybe next year.

I don't know about test-cutting on the playa. Every version of that requires wasting a lot of water or creating MOOP.
Oh, and Wolfe. We burn things. It's Burningman. You'll see.

Wolfe, I never cut dry mats before. It may be worth a shot I suppose. BTW I got that Hanwei/Tinker bastard the other day. Whoo-hoo!
I am thinking about designs for the Tarzan swing. Engineering help requested.
http://www.geocities.com/baldurstrand/o ... arzan.html

All members could be made from 4"x4" lumber, although the top beam as well as the two cross beams that support it could be made from 4"x6" lumber.
NOTE: In the final design, the top beam would be on top of the cross-beams, rather than butted to them.
The bracing is what puzzles me. I can get some heavy-duty corner braces made from 7 gauge and drilled for 1/2" lag bolts. This might be overkill.
A cheaper alternative is to use lag bolts to join the members and a 12" right-triangle made from plywood as a brace. But would that work as well?
At the base of each upright, I would attach a 2x6 on either side, about 4' long. I would attach these with either light lag bolts or heavy wood screws.
