first timer from the Bay Area

Hello folks-
I am excited about BM. I want to go, but since I know nothing about it, those kind souls that could educate me on the very basic (and that is not on the brochure I read already), unwritten, anecdotal reports, I would really appreciate it!
I play the guitar and a bit of bass guitar (blues, rock, some brazilian rythms). I will be going solo or with one friend, so anyone that is interested in hanging out, that would be cool!

Before the shit starts flying, I would suggest you read this until you fully understand it. http://www.burningman.com/whatisburning ... iples.html Then read this until you understand it. http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/ When you have reached this goal go back and MEMORIZE this. http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/ When you wake up in the middle of the night, screaming out passages from that, come back here and look for the answers that you seek. If, for some reason, you find something which hasn't been answered one hundred times or more, feel free to ask the specific questions that you have. Not to sound like an asshole, because I'm glad you want to go, this event is partly based on radical self reliance. (As poorly explained in the "Principles of Burning Man.) This means just what it says. Radical self reliance. I hope that you are up for the task, and hope to see you on the playa.

My best advice about BM? Stay Home. It sucks.

I read those. Thanks for getting me up to speed, and being thorough. You answered my questions (of what was unwritten about it). But the last post also answered, Token (I like your style - Zagat... "fine" dining experience on the "dust").

It doesn't get mentioned often, but I found it a super resource when I was studying up, and still enjoy it for a refresher: Alternative Energy Zone has a very detailed and easily read section on desert camping. Good checklist sort of information on what you really need, what you might need etc. I also like the prep instructions of dividing up what you can do now, what needs to be done last minute, what you might do if you have the time, etc. I really benefitted from the tip of having a playa ready pack, one that doesn't get unpacked and used in camp, but stays intact and ready at all times for taking off from camp. this pack has been for me a backpack one year, a shoulder bag last year, and this year I'm trying out something else with big pockets.
